Thread: Chris Mannix (SI) thinks JOB has earned an extension

Default Chris Mannix (SI) thinks JOB has earned an extension

I was playing around on rotoworld and looked up Danny Granger. Below his name this is what it says, "Coach Jim O'Brien has received a contract extension in wake of the Pacers' strong play as of late.

The oft-criticized coach has a tight relationship with Larry Bird, and the wins at the Staples Center and against the Heat probably didn't hurt. Either way, it looks like he'll be patrolling the sidelines for a few more years."

    Source: Chris Mannix on Twitter

I can't find this anywhere else so I don't think it is true, at least I hope it isn't.

There was a time when I would have thrown myself off a bridge (figuratively speaking) at this news. I'm lukewarm to it right now... I hope it wasn't for more than two years. He does have the team playing well.

    I can't see this.
I can't see Mr. Simon signing off on this. Not heading into a lock-out situation & where almost everyone else is up in the front office & on the court.

Eh, I guess I just don't see why Bird would do this now.

Mannix had a tweet that said this:

Jim O'Brien has earned an extension in Indiana. Hibbert backbones a top-10 D and Indy proved in LA when healthy, they are tough to beat

I bolded one part....I don't think he means it's a done deal, but that JOB deserved it. Maybe the source cited in the OP misunderstood this tweet?

It would be stupid to give O'Brien an extension right now. Why? All it would do is paint the team into a corner they don't need to be in. It's a long season and there's no reason why they shouldn't wait until the end of the season to make that type of decision.

If the team really wants O'Brien around they will make their case at the season ending exit meetings.

Changing O'Brien's status now would risk the current chemistry. It's not outside of the realm of possibility that the improved play has something to do with the the players believing this is O'Brien's last year and either it's uplifting to believe there's a light at the end of the tunnel or it's them deciding to play hard for him to help save his job (if they've warmed to him).

It's also possible the desperation of the situation has made him a better coach being in a 'contract year' so to speak. Let's not give him a security blanket to backslide now.

I hope the report is far from true...
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

Yeah, i thought the exact same thing when i read it.

The tweet was some 4 hours ago. There'd be a brief story somewhere else if it was fact and not opinion.

I just can't imagine it being true.

Let's say our team has a complete breakdown, and we win 30 games.

    Then what? We're screwed.

It only makes to sense to wait until the end of the year. I'm no JOB fan, but at least wait and see the end result prior to a split-second "ohhhhh we're playing well let's extend this genius!!!!!!!!!" decision.

I don't want him back, but if he comes back at least make him prove this team can stay this consistent.

Thought about posting this a couple of hours ago when I saw this...But after act looking at Mannix's twitter I'm fairly certain he's just saying that JOB deserves an ext because of the way the team is playing right now.

Yeah, it's in a couple of different places, all based on that tweet which I read as him saying JOB has coached well enough to deserve an extension - not that he actually got one.

If he did get an extension I'd expect it to be in the local news already.

I can't see the Pacers giving JOB extension based on a handful of games. We could easily head south again in the win department.

I have no idea how you reached the conclusion that he said he was extended. I'm editing this extremely misleading title before anyone else dies of a heart attack.
