Are you serious cdash? UNC waited to fire Doherty just so he could get the May/Felton/McCants class on campus.

Then they brought in Roy Williams. Then they won a national championship.
I was talking about his first paragraph. I didn't concern myself with the UNC stuff.

Right, but the UNC situation shows why we absolutely have to wait for 2012-2013.

Plus I think we all severely overrate the on this team. Two of our most talented guys are freshman and even then they are just 4 star guys.

I didn't expect us to be a tournament team this year, not even a NIT team. I expected us to be a little bit better which I think we are, but so is the Big Ten as a whole.

I expected us to be better. I expected us to beat the Iowas and Northwesterns of the world at home. I expected a record close to .500. I expected more progress. Next season, I have legitimate tournament aspirations. As I said earlier, the Big Ten is losing a lot of seniors and their POY (Sullinger is gone), and we lose nothing and gain a blue chip recruit at a position of desperate need. I expect real progress and a .500 Big Ten record next season. The season after that, I expect really big things.

My expectation for next year would be a record over .500 overall.

My expectations for the 2012-2013 season would be 20+ wins and a tourney berth (You fire Crean at the end of this season if he fails on those). My expectations for 2013-2014 would be Big Ten and National Contender.

You have low expectations for that 2012-2013 team. All our current sophomores will be seniors, we will have a loaded freshman class and depth at almost every position.

    Hulls/Yogi
    Creek/Patterson/Oladipo
    Watford/Sheehey/Etherington
    Perea/Elston
    Zeller/Jurkin

That team is better than 20 wins and a tourney birth. That team, on paper, has Big Ten title talent and top 3 or 4 seed in NCAA tourney potential.

Maybe, I think you might think significantly more of Watford than I do.

I really need to see this team with Zeller before I say they're going to be better than that in 12-13. Now if Gary Harris signs on, all bets are off...

Watford is already a good scorer and does nice things. Give him another year of experience in the Big Ten plus the added luxury of not being the focal point of the opposing team's defense and you have something there.

He won't make a major difference. We are fine on the wings and I really don't think he is leaps and bounds better than Ron Patterson. I've seen them both live a few times and I absolutely adore Ron Patterson's game.

Gary Harris can be Eric Gordon. Their games are strikingly similar.

    Trader Joe-

are you actually sticking by Crean? I just don't see how any rational IU fan can say that he is doing a good job. Sure, he has landed some recruits, and hopefully they pan out. But not eving making the NIT is a freaking joke.

No, I'm not necessarily "sticking by him", but I do think firing him after only 3 seasons is insane and will get us no where fast, and will probably just end in a deeper hole to dig out of.

Harris doesn't drive to the hole as much as Gordon, and I don't think he's quite as good of a shooter.

i think its insane to keep a coach while his team has somehow regressed in year three of the "rebuilding plan." There is no evidence to support your previous claim that IU is even "slightly" better than last season. Is Crean really worth it to keep around for 10 years? he is stealing money from Indiana University, and its sickening.

So what's your suggestion? How do you possibly fire Crean without alienating the entire coaching community? Are you even thinking this through or do you just automatically assume IU should win 20+ games a year because it's Indiana?

yes. i do expect to win at least 20 games per year. that is what i was spoiled with when coach knight was running the show. Crean couldn't hold Knight's jock strap.

Probably true, but it is just unreasonable to fire him now. You fire Crean after this year and you only gave him three years to turn around an absolute trainwreck. That sends a message that your administration is not very patient and is quite frankly unrealistic in their expectations. There is only moderate talent on the team and I'm sure we would see widespread decommitments from our top recruits. What top coach is going to want to walk into a mess like that? No one is going to want to take a job where the administration is foolish and there is no talent in the cupboard. That's why you have to give him 5 years.

i thought you were on the fence? trader joe must have got to you. Everything that you mentioned that could happen to IU if crean is fired is nothing but speculation. Who knows if the recruits would decommit? Maybe there is another coach that has love for IU? IU needs Crean gone, and that should be the primary goal. Not worrying about what could potentially happen if he is fired.

and what the hell were the expections for year three anyways? My expectations were at least an NIT appearance this season.

Were IU fans really thinking this after Crean was hired, "we suck now, but after 5 years, we will be in the NCAA tournament again. I can deal with not making at least a single NIT appearance in 3 seasons and getting swept by Northwestern because Crean is great. As long as he can land a few recuits, he can stay no matter what the W/L record is."

I'm on the fence about Crean and his coaching. Even when I was crusading against the guy earlier in the season (go back a couple pages in this thread and read some of my tirades), I knew that you couldn't realistically fire the guy until year 5.

Is is speculation? Of course it is, but it's also common sense speculation. You can't just make decisions without taking into consideration the ramifications of what you are doing. Many people are still willing to give Crean a chance to prove definitively that he is or is not the right guy for this program. Just because you have made up your mind doesn't mean everyone else has made up theirs.

My expectations for this year were: a record hovering around .500 (at least) and winning more games in the Big Ten than we won last year. Protecting our home court for sure was one of them. Needless to say, we have fallen flat on our faces with my expectations, so like you, I'm not very happy about it.
