Default .... and I nearly crapped my pants.

Today at work, I'm driving a US Department of Transportation registered vehicle with a lot of chemicals that can be dangerous to people, or the environment.

I was in New Castle, and to those who know the area, I was driving East on US Highway 36, just North of Memorial Park and I was about to take the ramp onto SR 3. That's when I hit the brakes and I realize ..... nothing happened. I'm going 55 MPH coming up to the ramp, and I'm not slowing down .... at all. I immediately knew if I tried to take the turn I was going to tip over the top heavy truck, spilling chemicals all over the place. The Environmental Protection Agency would have been all over it, and they would have had to have dug up a ton of soil trying to keep it out of the ground water ..... what a mess.

So I immediately checked my mirror and I knew it was going to be close, but I had to swerve back into traffic in a hurry. I didn't hit anything, or anyone. I bet the people behind me were calling me all sorts of names having no idea why I did that.

Needless to say, it scared the living **** out of me.

What did you eventually do about having no brakes? Coast to a stop off to the side of the road?

Glad you came out of it safe.

Yikes. I live here in town and know exactly where you were. How did you resolve your situation?

I knew going down 36 that there wasn't a stop sign, or stop light or anything for a while. I went straight until the cars around me went away and I could test the brakes. They worked a little so I turned off into a neighborhood. I stayed there and messed with the brakes and they were half working, it's just at the rate of speed being 55-60 MPH, it just didn't seem to do squat. When going slower speeds it at least slowed you down.

So I drove back down to Broad St/38 and drove with my emergency lights on at 35 MPH all the way to Noblesville and then took side streets down to Fishers where I needed to take the truck. Took forever, and I utilized the emergency brake a couple times to stop.

In Pendleton I tried to brake, and I felt bad because I ran over a squirrel. He's going to haunt my dreams, I swear he looked right up at me before I drove over him and I couldn't do anything about it. Never hit an animal before.

I'm not one to tell you your business, but with the cargo, wouldn't it have been better to sit dead stop and call out someone to fix the brakes? I would think the money or time involved in that solution was far less than the possible consequences of a wipeout, even at the slow speeds you drove....Especially through residential areas...

I'm glad everything worked out for the best, but I'm not understanding the choice with that long of a distance to go. Just my opinion.

Oops. I think you are correct. I don't think it'll do anything until you decelerate to a very low speed.
