Default NBA Affirms Intent To Roll Back Existing Contracts

    Nov 02, 2010 1:45 PM EST
The NBA affirmed its intent to seek a rollback of existing contracts. In addition to changing the rules governing contracts signed after the new collective bargaining agreement is in place, the league office will attempt to reduce current salaries, too.

"Yes. It's part of our proposal," Adam Silver said. "It included a reduction of existing contracts in addition to a reduction of the maximums going forward."

Silver was asked if Miami's big three would be expected to take a pay cut.

"That's what they did in the NHL," Silver said. "That was the system they had. All existing contracts were cut a certain percentage."

Always shoot for the moon in a negotiation.....

If I'm wanting a $5,000 a year raise from my employer.... I'm sure as hell not going to ask for that much just to get talked down from what I really want. I'm going to ask for twice as much and hope we can meet in the middle.

    This negotiation sounds no different!

I agree, ask for both, then say, okay we'll let the existing contracts stay in force and concede that point, as long as you let the max deal be reduced by 40% moving forward and to 4 years..... I guess we can make that sacrifice.

Negotiations sometimes the illusion of concession is just as good.

I do too. I'd be fine with only the first 2 years being guaranteed. This would hopefully ensure players are always playing hard.

But total BS on rolling back current contracts. The Pacers suffered through a lot and lost quite a bit of fans and are currently trying to earn the fans back. All the bad contracts are up after this years. Don't go telling our fans that we went through a bunch of ****ty years to now let some teams off the hook. No, homey don't play 'dat!

Plumlee reminds me of a young Dale Davis. Good rebounding and he contests shots well on defense and his offensive game is very raw just like DD's was coming out of college.

Whatever makes the game fun again is fine with me. If owners are broke, then players should get paid less. If players are not being fairly compensated, then owners should pay more. If they can't figure out how to be millionnaires together, then they deserve the lockout that is looming. I remember the late 90s lockout and would not be surprised if this one is longer.

teams dont know how to manage there money thats the issue

they get so scared the player will leave so they dont negotiate and just give them a boat load of money for years

the pacers manage there money well and pay there players what they deserve because they know they like playing here and would take any good offer

The only contracts required to be guaranteed in the current CBA are the first two years for first round draft picks and the first year of a player's contract if they are signed and traded.

    That's it. That's the list.

I wish someone would tell me that I'm taking a pay cut. That would be a bad argument.

Someone making millions having to take a pay cut doesn't bother me. Now someone making around $20k and has to take a pay cut is a whole different story.

So they just need to mandate no guaranteed contracts past X years. Or a contract only becomes guaranteed for the next season if a player is not released by X date.

The length of a contract wouldn't be a problem if the market didn't require it to be guaranteed for the life of the contract. In fact, for fans and the team having long contracts would be better.... as long as they are not guaranteed. Lock up that 2nd year player when he's on the upswing to be your face of the franchise. Then if he loses his passion for the game... or finds too many outside distractions... he can be cut and the team can move on. It's still good for the fans and the team.

The worst thing for the fans and the team is to see overpaid 'stars' dogging it on and off the court. But then Pacer fans know that scenario all too well.... I mean look what happened with Bowser! He got his contract and just let himself go and ballooned up in weight before the team was able to let him go...
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

I've taken 3 pay cuts in the last 5 years. I won't be feeling sorry for anyone in that salary range.

I agree, we aren't talking about people who are just trying to get by. These are people who can afford to buy cars that cost twice as much as the average persons house.

For me though I care more about teams being on an even playing field as far as cap goes. I don't care if the cap is 100 million or 10 million as long as there is a hard cap.
