Thread: 2010-2011 NBA Random Thoughts Thread part VII: Advent Children

Well, their ceiling is easily higher than the Pacers floor, so I can see them doing better than Indiana but I dont' think it's likely. I think Philly, Toronto and Washington are the worst teams in the East, by some order. Then Cleveland and Detroit in another tier. Those two may have an outside shot at the playoffs if everything goes well for them and a few of the other teams under-perform but in my view it's a very, very long shot.

One problem I see with Cleveland is that I don't know where defense is coming from. Varejao can't do all by himself. They were a good defensive team but that doesn't mean they'll keep being good.

Parker/Moon/Gibson (or whatever PG is playing off the ball)/Eyenga is one of the weakest wing rotations in the league.

Mo Williams can't run an offense to save his life, he's more of a short-2 in a PGs body. Sessions is an interesting player, very good in what he does well, but easy to limit due to his weaknesses.

And while the big man rotation of Varejao, Hickson and Jamison is passable, their depth beyond that is non-existent.

Mo Williams + Jamison are volume scorers who should be playing off the bench for a good team. When Mo Williams was running the point for the Bucks playing with Redd and Bogut, they were a 30 wins team. Jamison was the 1st option for the Wizards last season and they were in pace to win 20 games. The less they play and the larger the role Sessions+Hickson have, the better for the Cavs. If they play a lot of minutes and get a large amount of touches... they'll be in trouble.

If they can be a good defensive squad or Sessions explodes into the fringe All-Star he could be if he expanded his skill-set (jumper, better decision making... he's too reliant on the pick'n'roll/drive'n'kick combo right now) then they'll be a lot better than I'm giving him credit.

If you guys are using the free League Pass broadband you can watch archived games from tonight. Check out the last 5 minutes of the Nets vs Pistons game. Made my night just a little bit better

My call: The Pistons and the Raptors are going to be the two worst teams in the East. Cleveland can be frisky. The Sixers have some talent and Evan Turner looked pretty decent tonight. The Wizards will probably be pretty bad too.

D-Wade shot more free throws than the entire Sixers team. Were these the same refs from the 2006 NBA finals?

I wish there was a way we could get Stephon Curry here in Indy.

The Clippers are fun to watch. I hope they are on national TV more this season.

Hasheem Thabeet might currently be the worst player in the NBA.

Big game for Monta Ellis against the Rockets... 46 points on 75% shooting.

TMac re-inventing himself as a point forward was a lone bright spot in a very disappointing night.

He basically did everything well except score. We were a better team when he was in there because of his defense and passing.

You don't see GMs publicly sounding like fans on a message board very often, but here's Darryl Morway talking about Corey Maggette (might be a fan transcribing what he heard on a radio interview):

Host - Denver tomorrow. they beat Utah. Your thoughts?
DM - Yeah I was surprise they took it to Utah. Another positive is that in the nba close goes your way and doesn't go your way. It's about execution. If you get a chance to win on the road it's pretty good. It's not enough and we're not happy. it's not like we lost by 34 points and that points to much bigger problems then being in two close games against the champs and a back to back against to GSW. We could count on Corey M. giving us a bunch of bad shots when we played GSW. That didn't happen yesterday.

I'm waiting, either way I don't think he is going to get close to BG's debut, that guy is a beast.

I think he will. Wall is going to be exceptional right away. He should score plenty tonight. No Arenas.

In a heartbeat. Take Will Bynum and his no-defense playing *** while you're at it.

Maybe then Ben Gordon would be able to attempt more than 6 shots.

I can see Griffin having the best rookie season since Duncan. If he plays as he did in teh first half - very aggressive, very assertive - he can probably average 22 ppg or so. He was too timid in the 2nd half, didn't look for his shot enough.

Also loved the way he pushed the ball in transition, either with the pass or the dribble. Awesome rebounder. Once he learns to defend, he'll be an All-NBA player. Heck, I think he's at an All-Star level already.

The Blazers played a zone for a couple of possessions that throw the Clippers out of sync. That move may have decided the game.

    ----

I don't agree with Kstat's point about McGrady's defense but I do agree about his playmaking. His legs don't allow him to get enough separation to create good shots for him consistently - ends up settling for a contested shot almost always - but he can still make plays for others. I wish Bynum was kicked out of that rotation too. Spoils what could be a good thing. Also, makes the backcourt smaller + less talented defensively, which makes more difficult to play Daye at the 4 - not the same degree of protection that tall backcourt of Stuckey, Hamilton, Prince can offer.

What in the name of God does Will Bynum have on his feet?

yeah BG needs to know when to be agressive and when to slow down, right now he needs to be careful not to get hurt.

His favorite shoes. He loves blue. He also loves never being able to stay in front of his man.
