Default Random question/thought about James Posey

James Posey is sometimes known as being a "dirty" player, with people citing the incidents against Luol Deng and Tyrus Thomas as examples of his play. What do you guys think about this? Did you guys think he was a dirty player before becoming a Pacer? I myself forgot about the incident until I was looking up random videos, but I do recall at the time not really liking him for that.

I don't think he's a dirty player. He takes unnecessary fouls quite a bit but I don't view him as dirty. He's just a physical guy who I think sometimes let's his emotions get the better of him.

I'm sure he'll have his fair share of tech's this season, but not all t's are bad, given they occur when your team maybe needs a wake up call.

Posey is just a good physical defender. He is great backup at the 3 and maybe can help at the 4.

He's not as good defensively as Bowen and probably less likely to try a few cheap shots. At the same time, Bowen is a player I would have loved to have on the team. Dude was a great defensive player and the people complaining simply couldn't beat him. He was 0.1% cheap shot and 99.9% great defense.

He was just trying to defend in that video...and was a step slow so he made a wrong decision. Just bad luck.

this looks like lakers vs Cs back in the 80s lol no blood no foul. But it was a good foul in a tie ball game it is not dirty if it was a blow out different stroy(like ben wallace on Artest). but in this day in age that will always be called dirty which i think it is not.

Well after watching the video I think if he does this habitually then that might constitute being dirty, but if it's these two times then maybe he learned not to do it. The announcer seems pretty adamant that this is habit.

The line is fuzzy because growing up watching the Knicks/Pacers in the 90s I find myself day dreaming for those physical battles. Even on the Reggie 30 for 30 (I forget who it was) but they said flat out don't let anyone finish at the rim. I miss those days, and even if it is just because everything in hindsight seems better than what one currently has, I don't know how to identify the difference between his actions being dirty and old school NBA. Is it as simple as he was going for the ball?

I miss players like Oakley, Rodman, Barkely, A Mason, Dale and Antonio Davis etc...

    Were they dirty?

And if not, what was the difference?

I think the main thing is just understanding Posey is a physical defender. That's just the way he plays. He's extremely underrated as a defender as well.

I believe it was stated in an above post, but he makes plays like this, especially now, due to just being a step too slow. He's not getting any faster and when you're a step slow, you tend to make hard fouls in an attempt to recover.

Slow Step + Naturally aggressive defender = misconception of being a dirty player.

the rules have changed and it is a different league now a days foul calls are getting redonkulius. i mean you cant play good D in this league anymore without a foul being called. You cant hand check LOL dumb rule. i think it is because David Stern wanted more scoring. Over the years the rules keep getting stricter and stricter.

btw, please not I'm not trying to turn anybody against Posey, but it's just something I'm wondering about and I figure could warrant some discussion.

The first one I have no problem with. The one with Duncan is a bit a dirty but boys will be boys I guess. I've always liked James "Pocket full of" Posey. A couple "dirty" plays won't change that.

He is on the dirty side for sure. If he's on your team you like him but everyone who watches hates him when he does everything under the sun to your guy.

Bruce Bowen was a cheap shot artist and a thug. Of every professional athlete I've ever watched, he is the guy I'd most want to punch in the face.

And I couldn't even find a video of Bowen undercutting Vince Carter from about 5 years ago... I hate him so much.

Say what you want, but there is a common trend about dirty players. RINGS. Dirty players focus on defense and do what ever it takes to win a ball game. I would love our young guys to pick up on that type of intensity and copy it.

I love it. Posey, Dahntay, The Handy Man, McRoberts and Foster will do the dirty work for us this year. If somebody knocks one of our guys down going into the lane, they better be ready for retaliation. We're bringing the old school back, like only Larry knows how.

He's not dirty he's on our team now.

I consider this fair warning to other teams who play us to stay out of the paint.
