    Default Coaching K-4 BBall.

I've got a chance to coach some K-4 grade kids on a basketball team. Should I go for it? Never thought about it previously.

I coached my kids through sixth grade and my only regret is not doing it sooner.

    I really enjoyed coaching.

    And miss it.

Absolutely go for it. I coached a 5-7 year old baseball team and it was just a great experience all around. I focused on fundamentals, having a good time, getting everyone involved in the game experience, and foremost I taught them how to have good sportsmanship. It actually kept me in the Army an extra month, but I wouldn't have changed it for the world.

Pardon my ignorance, but what the hell is K-4? Is it basically 4th grade?

I've never coached any younger than 6th graders, but I vote for you to give it a shot. Hopefully I fall into a similar opportunity at some point. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Do the Kindergarten kids shoot on fisher price hoops? How does that work, exactly?

Assuming you have decent patience, it will be a blast for you that you will learn from as much as the kids you are coaching will, and you will have memories that will last a lifetime from it, and so will many of the kids you coach.

At 45 years old, some of my favorite memories of my life so far have come from participating in sports from 2nd grade through high school with coaching from my father and other dedicated men who taught everything from fundamental play to sportsmanship, as well as the lessons that were prevalent at that time that there are winners and losers in every game, and that improvement often comes as a result of being on the losing end of a given game.
