Thread: I think Larry Bird might take over as coach this season

Default I think Larry Bird might take over as coach this season

Judging by the tone of Larry Bird and Morway this off season, it really seems like he's laying the tracks for a return to coaching this season. Most likely retaining Jim " Stretch 4 " O'Brien as an assistant. The comments about O'Briens status, the stretch 4 comment, the power game at pf comments. I can really see a situation where Bird decides to take over everyday coaching duties and keeps O'Brien on the staff.

i really do not see it happening. Bird had his fun coaching back in 98-00, and that was a veteran-laden team. i also give much of the credit during that tenure to RC, as Bird will openly admit to.

Bird will bring someone in here that is going to be a great coach for us next season.

I don't see it happening. Larry Bird got his taste of the coaching gig and decided it wasn't for him. And that was with a great team and some solid assistants in Rick Carlisle and Dick Harter.

I just can't see him taking over a young, struggling team with inexperienced assistants Walter McCarty and Vitaly Potapenko.

I think you'll see Dan Burke coaching this team before you see Larry Bird.

Don't see it either, especially the part about keeping JOB on the staff when he takes over. I would certainly be open to Bird coaching again though, but I don't think that is what he wants to do...

Yah, I echo the sentiments of those above. I see maybe two scenarios in which Larry comes back to coaching: i) If the team is on the cusp of a title (i.e. the Pat Riley scenario, although I can't see Larry shoving someone out the door). ii) If the roster was such a mess that ownership got tired of losing and told him to "coach his mess" (i.e. the Kevin McHale scenario). Either way, I don't see it happening.

I see absolutely no chance of this - except for scenario ii under cdash's post, and I consider that to be infinitesimal.

I don't know. In his press conferences he saying the exact opposite of what Jim O'Brien normally does. If there ever was a time to think about him coaching the Pacers again it would probably be right now.

    No, won't happen

don't forget Bird was very critical of Carlisle during press conferences.

Coaches and GM's have differences of opinion all the time. They are big boys, and it is no big deal

Nope. Not gonna happen. Bird is more likely to resign from his position with the franchise and just go home than he is to coach at this point, and I don't see that happening this season, either.
