Liberal cable news talker Keith Olbermann has been benched from NBC's Sunday night NFL broadcasts this season, according to various reports.

The move, originally reported by SportsByBrooks last week, was apparently no reflection of his political views, but the gig conflicted with his daily MSNBC broadcast. Olbermann, 51, had taken an occasional Friday off to focus on NBC's pre-game show, something his bosses at NBC News weren't keen on.

The New York Post reported NBC officials told reporters that Olbermann's left-leaning political views had nothing to do with the move. Olbermann, who rose to the national scene as a co-anchor for ESPN's "SportsCenter," had been a part of NBC's football broadcast -- termed "Football Night in America" -- in some capacity since 2007.

Olbermann, who was paired with fellow "SportsCenter" expatriate Dan Patrick, did lace some of his sports takes with politics, including a minor ribbing of former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

I thought he was pretty entertaining myself.

I liked him (I don't really like him on Countdown though) but it was getting kind of ridiculous how many people they have on there.

Can they actually pick someone with a football/sports background? I'm tired of all these like KO or Dennis Miller or Rush or Gene Simmons.

If they're political, stay political. Comedy? Stay comedy. I'm tired of them trying to add in entertainment with "talent." Sports are entertaining enough without them.

Keith did have a sports background, he was on ESPN before he did political stuff.

The one I find annoying is Dan Patrick, I don't mind him on the radio but he can be awkward on the NBC broadcast. There's certainly nothing wrong with thinning out that ridiculous ensemble they have amassed. I think three guys would probably be enough? Instead of 17 or whatever it is now.

I know, I meant more of the criss-crossing stuff. If you want to be a political talking head, then more power to you. Just stay out of sports/entertainment. I watch that stuff to get AWAY from political bantering.

Why couldn't they have fired Rodney Harrison instead?

While I wouldn't lose sleep over it if it happened I actually don't mind him on FNIA he's direct.

Plus it was funny watching him in near tears after the Colts/Pats game last year.
