A nice little pickup for Indianapolis. Former Steelers cornerback Deshea Townsend signed with the Indianapolis Colts.
Good pickup for the Colts. Adds nice depth to CB with Hayden, Powers, and Lacey.

Gives us nice veteran CB help and our 4th CB since losing Kevin Thomas.

That is a nice little pickup! Ha I'm not use to the Colts picking up solid veteran talent.

Well they do from time to time pickup a veteran you've heard of.

Matt Stover, Adam Vinatieri, Corey Simon, Booger McFarland, Hank Baskett, Ricky Proehl, those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Not all of them worked out but I think it would be very hard to argue that picking up Vinny wasn't a difference maker. Picking up Baskett was a difference maker for the wrong reason...

I don't think of Hank Baskett as a vet much less a worthwhile football player

Yeah I think he will really help mentor a lot of our young talent at DB. He may not be a starter this year but hopefully his play of the bench and mentoring will play a big role in the Super Bowl this year...

They should've just brought Taj Smith up from the practice squad instead of signing He From Philly Who Shall Not Be Named Who Caused The Play Which Shall Not Be Named.

He's still trying to play? I assumed he had retired.

I hope he works out for you. He'll be a solid assistant coach, but I don't know if he's still got the footspeed to cover NFL-caliber receivers. Probably doesn't survive camp when that becomes appearant. He's also never been much of a special-teams guy, he's a pass-coverage specialist, generally as a nickle-back although he was a four-year starter.

We loved him early on because our other choices at CB were Chad Scott and Dwayne Washington.

We've invested a lot of third-round picks at CB over the past couple of years. There's a youth movement taking place, even with Ike Taylor and McFadden starting.

I would recommend moving him to FS if he sticks to the roster. I don't think he could start there (I don't know who your starting FS is), but he'd probably be a better backup FS than CB at this point.

    Pro Bowler Antoine Bethea.

The thing is, we don't really need help at the safety position. We NEED Corner help. Badley. And if anything, maybe the Cover 2 system will help him.

Well if you've got an established starter at FS then he's not going to win that spot!

I don't know about the Cover-2 helping him. But he does blitz pretty well from the weak side. Reality is that the Steelers DB's have generally played a Cover-2 zone scheme while the front seven run the zone blitz, except when they blitz a DB. That was the wrinkle that Tomlin brought to LeBeau three years ago. The Steelers' DBs don't play near as much man-to-man in the secondary as they did under Cowher.

Deshea, who I really wanted on the field last year as Gay struggled to replace McFadden (thank God he's back), has just lost a step. Period. Yes, we were missing our two best defensive players, but our CB combo of Gay/ Townsend was a weaker link than our backups for Troy and Aaron, and that's why we fell out to #16 in passing defense after being #1 the year before. (Again, thank God McFadden's back. I'm not saying McFadden is the savior of our defense, but watching Gay and Deshea get picked apart on third down last year was downright painful.)

He's a first class guy, though. You'll enjoy his leadership but you won't be seeing much that you like on the field out of him any more.

Oh, I totally hear what you're saying and definitely not expecting him to come in and be 2003 Ty Law, I just think veteran leadership at the CB position is something the team has sorely missed since the loss of Nick Harper. We already have our starting 3 Corners (Hayden and Powers, with Lacey coming in as the 3rd CB on passing situations) but what we need is Depth. More than likely, Hayden or Powers are going down for a few weeks at some point this season. Having someone like Deshea to follow the Colts long tradtion of "Next Man Up", it's definitely an upgrade over our previous guys in Tim Jennings and TJ Rushing, who you and I could beat on a double move
