NEW YORK (AP)—The NBA will release its opening week and Christmas Day schedules during an hourlong TV special Tuesday.

NBATV officials said Friday their network will host a program at 7 p.m. EDT, at which time it will unveil the slate of games for “Tip-off ’10,” plus the Christmas and Martin Luther King Jr. holidays.

The full NBA schedule will be released on Aug. 10. This is the first time the league has released portions of it early.

The reason is likely because of the anticipation for the debut and marquee games involving Miami’s new trio of LeBron James(notes), Dwyane Wade(notes) and Chris Bosh(notes).

Looks like we will have to wait until the 10th before we see any of the pacers schedule.

What's the over-under on the number of games the Heat get on national TV this year?

I think a Lakers-Heat Christmas Day matchup is almost a guarantee.

I'll echo Mark Boyle in saying this is asinine. Just release the whole thing at once.

I could see the Heat on TNT just about every Thursday night and on ESPN/ABC on the Friday night and the weekends.

Seriously? I'd take the over on that. I think the old "maximum/minimum" rules have been out the window for some time.

If there's ever a year that will be broken, it'll be this year. The Heat will get like 41.

The Pacers will get one at the end of the year, that will be switch once them and the opponent are not in the playoff hunt at the end of the season

Well the article says opening week and Christmas Day so I would assume that means every game that first week?

Unless the games start on like Friday or Saturday and it will be like 2-3 games or something?

I just hope the Pacers don't open AT the Heat, granted that may be their only nationally televised game.

If I had to guess, I'd say Pacers open season... at Chicago?

It'd be nice if the Pacers vs. Hornets made the 8/3 list.

Is this some kind of superbowl thing? New Orleans vs Indianapolis.

No, it is going to be Heat vs lakers for Christmas. Heat vs cavs would be too negative (NBA has already said that)

There is a limited number of times a team can be on each network.

Holiday Road: NBA To Unveil Christmas, MLK Day Games on Tuesday
This summer, hour-long primetime NBA specials are apparently en vogue.

The NBA will unveil its Opening Week, Christmas Day and Martin Luther King Day schedules during an hour-long TV special on NBA TV Tuesday night, marking "the first time the league has released portions of it early."

The league appears to be following the lead of the NFL. Typically, the NFL releases portions of its Week 1 schedule and its Thanksgiving Day slate prior to the release of the full schedule.

Additionally, NFL Network aired a primetime special on the release of the 2010 NFL schedule.

Christmas Day is the highest profile day of the NBA's regular season, usually featuring the league's best matchups. In each of the past two seasons, the league has scheduled five games for the holiday, with ESPN airing a game at Noon ET, ABC airing games at 2:30 and 5:00 PM, and either ESPN (2009) or TNT (2008) airing a primetime doubleheader at 8:00 and 10:30 PM.

Similarly, Martin Luther King Day features a day-long slate of games, typically culminating with a tripleheader on TNT (5:30, 8:00 and 10:30 PM ET). Last year's MLK Day line-up included an NBA Finals rematch (Magic/Lakers), while the previous year featured Kobe Bryant facing LeBron James (Cavaliers/Lakers).

The full 2009-10 NBA schedule will be released the following Tuesday (August 10).

Miami at Cleveland apparently wasn't "too negative" for opening night...

    http://www.cleveland.com/ohio-sports...nd_cavali.html

NBA TV will announce key nationally broadcasted games for the 2010-11 NBA season Tuesday at 7 p.m.

In the past, the league would just release the schedule in a memo, but in the age of TV specials (i.e.The Decison), everything has become an event. So in a special program, NBA TV will reveal which teams will be featured during ESPN and TNT's opening week coverage, as well as Christmas Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day matchups.

One source told Starting Blocks that the Miami Heat will open the season at The Q against the Cleveland Cavaliers. If that's true, it will be like the Baltimore Ravens first game in Cleveland against the new Browns.

NBA.com will exclusively announce the full 2010-11 regular season schedule on Tuesday, Aug. 10.

They do have to play at least once in Cleveland so it makes sense it would be on national TV. Little surprised it is the first game of the season - should make for big TV ratings though.

They have to play sometime, I can understand the rationale of getting it over with as quickly as possible. Still, the first game of the year is pretty insulting to Cleveland. I would have it in the first couple weeks, though.

Really, really doubt they have the Heat open in Cleveland, that raises the chances of some drunken idiot doing something dangerous/stupid, by about 1,000%.
