NBA star Amar'e Stoudemire heads to Israel after discovering Jewish roots - Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News

U.S. basketball star Amar'e Stoudemire is apparently on his way to Israel for a voyage of discovery after learning he has Jewish roots.

"On the flight to Israel. This is going to be a great trip," announced the power forward, who plays in the NBA for the New York Knicks, via the micro-blogging site Twitter.

According to an Army Radio report, Stoudemire plans to spend time in Israel learning Hebrew, having recently learned he has a Jewish mother.

"The holy land. Learn about it," he wrote, adding "ze ha'halom sheli" – Hebrew for "this is my dream."

News of Stoudemire's trip quickly had Israeli basketball fans buzzing with speculation that they might one day see him playing alongside another Jewish NBA star, Israel's Omri Casspi, on the national team.

So far there is no indication as to whether Stoudemire is here to stay – although for the moment, Israel seems to be getting along just fine without him, beating Great Britain 86-82 in Tueday's training game.

    Well, he certainly looks Jewish.

"Recently learned he has a Jewish mother?"

Jewish ancestor on his mother's side, fine. But how does somebody like Amare suddenly discover a Jewish mother? Didn't he just watch her get arrested for drunk driving or something? Surely he'd have noticed if she was Jewish.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

It doesn't work that way. You're only determined to have Jewish ancestry if you have a Jewish mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, etc.

Maybe he had a mother 100 years removed he recently found out about. Who knows?

I got a post removed on the Chinaman thread and I think it's about to happen again if I'm not careful.

I see. We're using the word "mother" differently.

He learned it three days after she converted maybe? Who knows. People do goofy **** sometimes. I'm sure if I dug hard enough I could find some common thread to give me an excuse to go to Israel too.

I would imagine that she is probably Jewish by blood not practice. KInd of like being Native American because you have it in the family. It would be interesting to see his family tree though.

Kind of like Chris Kaman playing for the German national team because his family has German ancestry.

We need to understand were Amare is coming from, his mom is a drug addict and his family is messed up, I think he is trying to find out who he is and for a guy like him with a crappy background this is a good way to do so.

He reminds me of a guy I know who never knew who his father was and was always embracing any culture that was put in front of him.

That's a pretty crappy thing to say. Anyway, you have to have a Jewish relative by birth, not conversion.

I find it pretty ridiculous that people have an issue with this guy embracing Jewish heritage because he's black. If this was Mike Miller, nobody would see something wrong with it.

True, although if Mike Miller discovered his Nigerian heritage that might get a thread.

Hey, speaking of Nigerian, did you guys see this?
