    Default Brickyard 400

    What has happened to it? Was it the Goodyear tire fiasco? The economy? The change from Sat to Sunday? The date change to July from Aug? Nascar jumped the shark?

    Or is it just me being too busy to notice?... It just seems like the buzz is gone entirely this year. Crowds were obviously down last year. And things aren't looking good for this year from what I'm hearing. There's even speculation in some corners that the BY400's days might be numbered.

    Hard to believe how quickly it's lost its luster without any great fissure to argue as the driving force.

    Also, the BY400 is again the BY400. It no longer has a corporate sponsor (which was Allstate). I think Golden Corral has a TV sponsorship so on TV it will be something like "Golden Corral presents the Brickyard 400" or "The Brickyard 400 brought to you by Golden Corral". But those don't pay IMS anything.

    Of course you'd think in a down economy they'd accept a much lower number for the rights to at least a 1 year sponsorship (so they'd have something for the bank as opposed to nothing (at least as far as naming rights go)... but I guess they consider that ultimately lowering the market value as opposed to holding out for larger dollar and longer term contracts.

    Being a die-hard NASCAR fan, I've known since I was a little kid in 1994 that the secret to NASCAR race weekend here is the racing at ORP. The Brickyard is overrated.

    I wouldn't worry about the title sponsor, but ticket sales are a significant concern.

    Last year Grace and I went, and we drove down 2 hours early, because of traffic. Well, we drove right in, parked, walked in and sat there marveling at how few people were there. That's one thing we learned seeing it on tape later, TV doesn't begin to show how few people are there. The way people are spread out, on TV it looks like a stand is mostly full, when it could only be 30%.

    Did the tires hurt? Sure, but at worst all that did was bring Indy down to level with all the other races. Attendance is horrible everywhere.

    Lastly, this may seem non-sequitur, but I'm really against this new "hands off" strategy by TPTB. I can tell you I sure don't want to go sit at a race and watch Edwards punt Keslowski's car into my lap.

    The 'Have at it, boys" strategy this year has made the season way more bearable than what it otherwise is. With all due respect, I don't get it when people make the remark of "we don't want a car flying into the stands because of the drivers aggressive driving." I don't like that kind of mentality. Hell, the immortal Mark Martin once said, "When it comes to this sport, if you start to get scared, that's when you know you need to get out." That's the way I've always felt about the crashing. The danger of the sport has always been one of it's selling points. Hell, it was at it's height when Earhardt was intentionally punting guys to win races. The watering down of the cars and driving etiquette has made the sport lose it's luster in the recent years. And besides, these cars are friggin tanks now. When Keselwrecksi got punted and flipped over in Atlanta (which was awesome), he turned back around with most of the car virtually in tact, considering how hard of a wreck that was. In regards to this incident and the one that happened at 'Dega in 2009 between the same 2 drivers, both were due solely to the Wing. That's the main reason they got rid of it. cars can't lift up in the air as easily anymore. The drivers have said that the cars handle mostly the same, but the spoiler if anything adds a little more downforce in terms of keeping the car planted to the pavement.


    I love it. I hate that they put both guys on probations and REALLY hate that they docked Carl 60 points. Brian France and Mike Helton have made some really poor PR decisions in recent years. This return to roots and "Have at it, boys" is a great start to rebuilding what they tore down. I just hope they don't wuss out turn back on this decision.

    All sports are better with rivalries. NASCAR needs it's rivalries.

    I wasn't talking about the drivers getting hurt. I'm guessing you're not old enough to remember tires going into the stands and killing people.

    I grew up in a family of NASCAR fanatics, I've heard every story and pretty much seen stuff like that.


    My point is that all that dangerous stuff like this;








    ...has been technology-related and not as much driver-related. NASCAR has basically made these cars bricks now. The probability of cars launching into the stands now is VERY slim. And if NASCAR really is that concerned about cars launching into the stands, then they should require tracks to have bigger and stronger catch-fences instead of turning their drivers into emotionless, pensive-driving wussies like they mostly were from 2000-2009.

    Let 'em go get it. (side note: bring back Bob Jenkins to the telecasts.)

    Half the problem with the lack of luster is that ever since NASCAR went to the COT the racing has been crappy. The other half of the problem is the economy. They cut the ticket prices this year, but after last year's snoozefest I don't really think there will be much of an upswing in the attendance.

    Personally, I'd rather go to the Nationwide race at ORP. I was at the first one 20something years ago. We went to a few when my dad would get freebie tickets from work. However, after last week there is no way I'd go to a race with Carl Edwards in it. I don't trust him as far as I can spit.

    lol I have a few guys that I raced with on NASCAR 09 that drove a pink #18 Tampax car. I found it rather humerous, especially when they would get their "cage rattled" by your's truly in the last lap.

    I'm just sensitive about the catch fence because seems like every Indy death in my lifetime has involved it. Then when you throw a much heavier car into one, at facilities where they can't even pave the track right, I get very nervous.

    You're talking about 2 completely different situations, man.

    Those Indy cars are like friggin paperweights. Those things can catch air if they simply take a turn too hard. Not to mention that big huge wing doesn't help at all. The wing is a positive and a negative. It keeps cars in control better than just a regular spoiler. If guys get sideways it acts as a safety net and let's drivers save their car easier. However, once a car does eventually spin out, that wing's cutting the air underneath it and taking off.

    The Cup cars simply cannot catch air at Indy. For one thing, they go way slower than the Indy cars, going 200 on the straights and about 150-160 in the turns. The Indy cars are 220-230 around the whole track. That's a big difference. Plus, the COT's weigh about 2-3 times as much as those Indy Cars, and have built-in safety measures to keep the car grounded (The Roof Flaps and the pop-up vents on the hood). And finally, and this is the most important, Indy's a flat track. Cup Cars simply cannot flip on flat tracks. As mentioned earlier, the speeds aren't high enough, but there's also no banking for the car to gain momentum, nor is there enough track space for a car to do so.

    Putting it in lamen's terms, aside from Martinsville, Indy is probably the safest track for the Cup drivers and fans.

    Montoya takes the Indy Pole again. At this point he's almost a specialist as it's obvious that the guy knows Indy like nobody's business. He was fastest in practice yesterday too. At least he was in the early session, I didn't stay for the 3:30 session as it was just too darned hot. In that session Montoya and Jimmie Johnson's cars were in a class by themselves as nobody else was coming within a MPH or two of them and it looks like they went 1-2 here today as well.

    Once you do it once, to say you did it, what's the motivation for doing it again? As much as I love the speedway, it's not a good track to watch a stock car race. It's pretty horrible, in fact. If you want to watch a good one, go to ORP.

    I actually thought yesterday's race was somewhat enjoyable to watch live. Granted, it's not 2002 or 2009 Kroger 200-level excitement wise, but it was still much better than I expected.


    Disappointed in the sparse crowd. The Speedway and NASCAR can blame the economy all they want, but it's their fault for the 2008 debacle and 2009 snooze-fest. But hey, at least I was able to get to the track, find a parking spot, and get out of there with relative ease.
