Default Arroyo returns to Heat, will vie to be starter

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_yl...ap-heat-arroyo

MIAMI (AP)—Carlos Arroyo has finalized his deal to return to the Miami Heat.

Arroyo appeared in 72 games and made 35 starts at point guard for Miami last season, then decided to return to the club after a brief stint as a free agent. He averaged 6.1 points and 3.1 assists, plus had a stellar 4.17 assist-to-turnover ratio.

The team announced his signing on Thursday, giving Arroyo the chance to vie for a championship alongside Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

“By re-signing Carlos, we feel we have accomplished another big step in adding to this team,” Heat president Pat Riley said. “Carlos showed last season that he was one of the most competitive and efficient point guards in the NBA, and we are happy to have him back.”

Arroyo, who turns 31 later this month, played college basketball in Miami at Florida International.

He becomes the 13th player under contract with Miami for the 2010-11 season and just the second true point guard, joining fellow returnee Mario Chalmers.

Another FA PG gone from the small group that's still left.

I guess Mike Miller will be the 6th man. That should be fine for them.

    Arroyo/Chalmers
    Wade/Miller
    James/Jones
    Bosh/Haslem
    Ilgauskas/Anthony

    Eh, it's not that great.....

...and we all thought Lebron had a chance for a ring.

The Lakers will beat that team without breaking a sweat.

I like Carlos Arroyo - legal issues aside - but from what I saw of him last year he appeared to be a step slower than in the past. I suppose he only needs to be serviceable in this line-up though. He's definitely the best option out there (for the Heat) in my opinion.

He knows the system, comes cheap and most important he's a pass first point guard with the second best asst-to-turnover ratio in the league. He will be needed on a team where everyone will want to shoot.

    I seriously doubt that.

It's going to be an interesting season. The question is, can talent on the wing overcome the fact the team will not have much force in the middle.

Bosh cannot guard Dwight...at all....and Dwight will dominate the paint so Lebron and DWade will not be having a dunk fest with him in there. But I would still give Miami a good shot at beating them.

The Lakers match up very well with Miami considering Miami's talent level. Artest and Odom are pretty physical at the 3 position and might slow down Lebron a little. Kobe can probably guard DWade as well as anyone in the league. The Lakers front line will kill Miami...so Miami will need to go small. But the Lakers can go small with Kobe, Artest, Odom and Gasol. Swap in Bynum and he will physically dominate Bosh. I do think if Miami beats the Lakers it will be because they force the Lakers to have one big on the floor.
