    Default Going to Chicago

Tomorrow and Saturday. We have three things we are doing for sure:

    Giordano's for lunch tomorrow.
Pitchfork Music Festival from 5:00 to 10:00.

    and then

Lincoln Park Zoo on Saturday around noonish.

So what else do people suggest? We are probably going to leave around dinnertime on Saturday and we have two under 21ers going with us so no bars, etc.

Any input from current or former Chicagoans?

Went up a coule of years ago, to see a RedSox/WhiteSox game. Jay was a boss, about directions and other helpful info.

All I can tell you is that driving up there is a *****. Just crazy. Think of the short interstate exchanges like when getting on to 69 from 465 east, how when you get on to 69 there is an exit ramp right in front of you and you have to merge over quickly.

All of them are like that but you have 4 lanes to your left packed full of traffic going 70 weaving in and out. It was insane. Chicago and Atlanta are, by far, the worse driving conditions I've seen.

    Stay safe.

I lived a block away from the zoo for a year and it can really get overrun on Summer weekends. I would avoid the zoo on Saturday and just go to the lakefront/beach near the zoo.

I would also highly recommend shopping in Wicker Park/ Bucktown. I know you guys are fans of the "indie" thing and that is Chicago's epicenter for all things hipster. But not in a bad way. Division, Damen, Milwaukee and North Avenues all have fantastic shops, restaurants and bars. The movie version of High Fidelity was based entirely in that neighborhood with good reason.

    Breakfast: Ear Wax
    Bookstores: Quimby's; Myopic.
Bars: Gold Star, Danny's, Piece Pizza, Rainbow.
Restaurants: too many to name, but I really miss Silver Cloud. Good Ol' Cookin. Meat Loaf, Tater Tots, Mac and Cheese, YUM!

Here's the best city guide for where to eat and what to do on a daily basis:
    http://www.chicagoreader.com/

I sure do miss Chicago in the summertime.

Make sure you go to the original Giordano's and not one of the franchises. The quality at the franchises gets worse every day. Frankly, there are dozens of better places to go for pizza, but I understand that people from out of town want Giordano's.

Its gonna be hot - you might want to walk across the bridge from the zoo to North Avenue Beach to cool off.

Which one is the original Giordano's? Also, where would you recommend for pizza? I've had Gino's East and Giordano's when I was in high school and I loved them both. That's why I want to go to Giordano's, but I"m open to suggestions.

I like the original UNO better (again, not the chains locations/ franchises.)

    Gino's is now at 633 N. Wells

Uno is still at 29 E. Ohio

Giordano's - pretty sure this is 730 N. Rush Street, but our Porn/Malware filter at work won't let me access the website to confirm. Strange.

The original Giordano's is pretty close to the original Uno IIRC. It's been 6 or 7 years since I ate at the original Giordano's. I remember the dinner wait is a ***** and a half though. I don't know if it's the same at lunch.

I went to Chicago once. I thought I saw a mermaid at the aquarium.

I'm never allowed to go back to the aquarium again.

That guy in the scuba gear feeding the fish in the coral reef exhibit has never been the same. He still gets jumpy anytime someone wears a shirt with an Indiana Pacers' logo to the aquarium. Nightmares.

I agree with Jay regarding Giordano's. Half rate. If you get Pizza, you need to go to a true Chicago original, The Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder on Clark St. It's right across from the site of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and very close to the zoo/waterfront. They don't take reservations, so go at a slightly odd time (early or late, NOT during the heavy rush.

Or... my company's filter and dysfunction go hand and hand? Not really sure. But I wasn't going to try again. Don't need one of "those" calls from HR!

I'm going to Chicago in September to see a Dave Matthews concert at Wrigley. My friends are huge Dave fans, and I get dragged along to a new locale every year to see his infinite mediocrity.

Anyways, my question is: Where is the best place to get Italian Beef?

We pretty much just did what Ms. Piggy mentioned in the first post and added a breakfast Saturday morning. Got into town about 2 local time. Ate at the Giordano's on Rush, which was really good. Then went and checked in at our hotel, then off to our concert. We came back to the hotel and slept (I know we're such crazy party kids) and then ate Saturday morning at the Original Pancake House which was good and not crazy expensive. Then we went to the LP Zoo which was surprisingly not ridiculously busy.

It was a lot of fun, and we were home by 7, which was good since Andrea had to work at 6 this morning. Here are some pictures she took, they are on Facebook but this link should work whether you have Facebook, are or aren't friends with her:

How was Pitchfork? I'm out of town for both that and Lolla and it's killing me.

Just went for Friday. It was packed but good. We watched Hannibal Buress and Wyatt Cenac instead of Liars and Robyn. But bandwise we watched BSS and Modest Mouse. They were both really good.

We could've had the Forum Party in our hotel room...although I think that would be a fire hazard having that many people in one hotel room.

Not cheesesteak, Italian Beef. At least I'm fairly certain that is what it was called. I had a roommate from Chicago that would always bring a homemade recipe and it was amazing stuff. I think it originated from Italians in Chicago, but I can't be too sure of that.

I just figured that Italy would be the default choice for something called Italian Beef
