Default Reminder: Indy's NBA Pro/Am League starts this week!

Just a reminder that the Indy NBA Pro/Am league starts this week on Tuesday 6/29/2010 at the IUPUI gym downtown. Games are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-7 and 7-8pm through 8/5/2010.

Per their website, some of the NBA players participating will include: Eric Gordon, George Hill, Jeff Teague, Mike Conley, Roy Hibbert, Josh McRoberts, Sean May, Jeff Green and DJ White just to name a few. I'm sure there will be some additional surprises throughout the summer too.

Plus, unlike last year, there will be current college players from Ball State, IUPUI, Purdue, Butler, etc. participating as well. Furthermore, there will also be some European and NBDL players who will be participating that you'll be familiar with as many played high school or college ball here in Indiana.

If you need your basketball fix this summer, this is a great place to get it! The league is officially sanctioned by the NBA and run by former IUPUI player and Indiana Fever assistant, Carlos Knox. For more info, please visit: www.indyproam.com

I'll be at the games on Thursday this week in case anyone from PD is attending and wants to meet up and talk some hoops?

If anyone's is going, scout George Hill and Mike Conley. Obviously know they can play, but see what they would have to offer. Especially Hill and his ball-handling, decision making and court vision

I'm hoping to make it to the one on July 8th as that's the day of my birthday. I'd like to attend more than 1 obviously this summer, but I'm pretty busy at the moment and I live 2 hours south of Indy, so it's going to be hard to make it to most of them. We'll see though. I did ask Sean May about it on Twitter and he says that he doesn't think he's going to be able to make it, but on the updated rosters on the Indy Pro-Am website, he's still listed on the roster, so who knows??

I attended last night's game and had a great time. Several NBA players were in attendance and playing, including:

    -- George Hill
    -- Zach Randolph
    -- Fred Jones
    -- Eddie Gill
    -- Andre Owens

These guys (minus Owens) actually all played in one game together as it was Zach, Fred and Gill against Hill's team. Granted, this is a pro-am league, but the game was pretty entertaining. Zach was hitting the mid-range jumper consistently and attacking the basket effectively. Jones looks like he has slimmed down a little and looked really good as he attacked the basket and had a posterizing dunk. Hill also played really well and is such a quick point as he was navigating through the lanes between some of the larger players and finding teammates constantly. Eddie Gill also looked very sharp distributing the ball and finding Jones and Randolph down in the post and on the wing. The game ended up going into Triple-Overtime with the Red team of Randolph, Jones and Gill getting the win.

Afterwards, I spoke to both Hill and Randolph. Both were nice, but Zach took the time to speak to me for several minutes and took a picture with me as well. He was with his girlfriend, Mom, Step-father (I think) and his daughters. There was no entourage and he couldn't have been nicer speaking with me and several other fans. Zach also recalled our conversation last summer as he mentioned a mutual friend that we have. But he was very friendly and asked how my summer had gone, how I was doing and was just incredibly nice.

George Hill was also nice, but short. I told him I wish he were playing for the Pacers and he gave me a weird look.

The game prior, I watched Shelvin Mack of Butler and the guy definitely looks like he could be an NBA player. His shot is strong and he does a lot of good things with and without the basketball. I didn't watch a lot of Butler basketball until this year, but Mack is a heck of a player. I was reading how he was a participant in Lebron's skills camp this week and also impressed. I know that Butler has a few players participating, including an incoming freshman.

But if you're needing your basketball fix, this is a great place to do so. Admission is completely free as you only have to pay for parking ($4). The games are entertaining, competition is strong with good talent, the players are very accessible and it's just a fun time to watch some basketball. Plus, you get a chance to see guys like Hill, Randolph, Jones, Mack, etc. I know a few other guys including DJ White, Eric Gordon, Jeff Green, Hibbert, McRoberts, etc. are all scheduled to participate. I would imagine that we'll see some of these guys soon as summer league is starting to wrap up.

thanks for the update! I wish I could have gone last night as it was my birthday, but things just didn't pan out like I had hoped. I'm just really really hoping I'll be able to make it at least once this month, but who knows how that will go at this time. But anyway, thanks for the info/updates/stories!!

I have gone the past two weeks (on Thursday's). If anyone from PD is attending and wants to meet up and talk basketball, please let me know as I plan on attending every Thursday until the season sends in about a month.

I was there the night the four Fever gals were there. They left around 9 and played the next day at 1:00 and lost

That night the 2nd team had Andre Owens and George Hill. George looked better than Andre. The 3rd team had Eddie Gill and Freddie Jones playing together - it was pretty sweet. They both played great, but Jones was hitting threes, forcing inside, and had a monster dunk and a few attempted monster dunks that got fouled. I think he had 23 points in a game where the clock doesn't stop... I tweeted about it when I was there. It was pretty cool to see two former Pacers pass and shoot like that for free.

There are a couple other good guys from last year and a IUPUI freshman who can shoot that are pretty fun to watch. Parking is $4. No beer.

I went last night and it was pretty cool. I'm not gonna lie, I mainly went to this event solely for the possible autographs I could get. Luckily there were lots of highly talented players there last night--I'd say the best overall talent that there's been all summer long. Below is a list of who all was there (NBA/D-League/overseas/better college players)...if you want to know how they did or anything, just ask.

Zach Randolph (showed up late to his game...imagine that lol)
    Fred Jones
    Eddie Gill
    Devan Dumes
    Andre Owens
    Matt Howard
    Shawn Vanzant
    Shy Ely

Matt Howard really impressed me and it seems as if he's really increased his range so far this offseason (nailing 3s).

A couple comments from players I talked to that others might be interested in for whatever reason:

-ZBo told me that he is going back to Portland, OR in a week, so I'm assuming he still has his friends up there, his home, etc. It seems like he still has lots of love for Portland.

-I asked Andre Owens if he had any plans to return to the NBA anytime soon, and he said he actually has a workout planned in the coming weeks with the New York Knicks.

A few notes from the games though:

-Zach Randolph looked real slow...he'd inbounds the ball, take a few jogging steps, then walk, and then stop completely at halfcourt. Near the end of the game, Fred Jones was doing this with ZBo as well. ZBo used a lot of muscle down low to get his points, though. He loved jacking up long 3's when he got the ball up top, of which he never made any, and he airballed most of them lol (it made me remember his days as a New York Knick lol ). Very cool guy though and pretty talkative as well. He did show up late to his game which I didn't find surprising at all lol.

-Andre Owens was looking like a pretty good PG on the court. His team did best when he had the ball in his hands making plays or scoring.

-Fred Jones was HOT on the 3s...nothing but net and made almost all of them. I believe he finished with 5 made 3s. He also had a nice dunk.

-Some guy with a last name of Dearman looked pretty good. I think he only played in the 2nd half, but he hand nice dunks and brought good energy off the bench. He even did an alley-oop dunk off the backboard which was pretty nice.

-A tiny guy...forget the last name but his first name was Josh...He had a HUGE dunk. On the fastbreak took off from way out, hung in the air for a while, and then threw it down. That was when the crowd was the loudest. Lots of oohs and ahhs then.

Thanks for the update. I usually attend most Thursday's whenever possible and was unable to make it to the games this past Thursday.

A player to watch, who was gone this week because he's on the college team playing against team USA in Vegas, is Shelvin Mack. The guy is very unselfish, is a creator and has a pretty good jumper too. I could definitely see him playing in the NBA in a few years if he continues to progress.

I didn't see the 4 Fever players, but I did see Tamika Catchings there the first week I attended. Carlos Knox, who runs the pro-am league, is an assistant for the Fever and works with a lot of the players, thus don't be surprised to see some of them show up occasionally.

As far as Zach going slow, he's scheduled to make 17.3 million this season and is looking for a long-term extension, so I doubt that he'll play at full speed and try and put himself in a position to get injured.

Some other players mentioned for Indy Pro Am that I haven't seen yet, include McRoberts, Mike Conley, Roy HIbbert, Eric Gordon, DJ White, Jeff Green and Daequan Cook. I'd also love to see guys like Paul George, Magnum Rolle and Lance play a little bit too.

Is there anywhere to see box scores of the games? And anyone know the deal with Jones? Is he returning to the NBA this season?

Magnum Rolle told me on Twitter he's working out with the staff this upcoming week, but he plans to come thru like first week of August or earlier if possible (it is supposed to end on Aug. 5th tho). Daequan Cook keeps telling me he's in OKC and working out and getting settled in, so I wouldn't hold my breath on him coming. I have no idea on McRoberts (thought he'd already been there some), Conley, Hibbert (he probably won't paly now that he had that knee issue and will probably play it safe), Gordon (USA Basketball tryouts right now), DJ White, Jeff Green (don't think he'll show up as he was "taking care of some things" this summer). I did hear that Oden has been in Indy all summer and he goes to some bar all the time...not for sure what bar it is. But he probably doesn't want anymore freak injuries when he doesn't have to take the risk. Shelvin is actually in Vegas this week for USA Basketball practices/tryouts for his age group but I think will be back starting next week. It sounded to me like ZBo played his last Indy Pro-Am game on Thursday for the summer, but who knows he might show up once more before he leaves for Portland.

Sorry, I didn't see your post. I'm assuming you mean Fred Jones, and from the looks of it he still has NBA potential--most likely as a bench player, though. He'd need to get back into game shape and game condition. Like I said, he hit just about every one of his 3-point shots (I believe he was 5-6 on them) and he still has great range on his shot. He can still get up for big dunks as well. He was gassed by the last few minutes of the game, though--that's about the only negative thing I saw and it wasn't that bad.

nah I don't think that there is. Pretty much the only statistical people there is a guy that says the player's name on the PA system when a basket is made.

Fred might have trouble getting around would be the main problem. He has to go right 3 times to go left.

Anyone from PD go to the champtionship game tonight? I was there and it was a really good game with the Blue team getting the win and winning the championship.

Eric Gordon of the Clippers was in attendance watching, but not playing. I got a chance to talk to him for a few minutes after the game about his summer, preparing for New York with Granger next week and the Clippers. He was a super nice guy and took a picture with me as well.
