The Atlanta Hawks have promoted assistant coach Larry Drew to become their next head coach, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Drew has been a Hawks assistant for six seasons and has 16 years of coaching experience but has never been a head coach. Drew, who also played 10 seasons in the NBA, was popular with the Hawks players, which helped him land the job after Mike Woodson was fired following a second-round loss to the Orlando Magic.

Drew was hired over Dallas Mavericks assistant Dwane Casey and NBA television analyst and former player Mark Jackson. Hawks ownership made the decision following a conference call with team officials. The Hawks made it to the playoffs three straight seasons, but were dominated in the second round the last two years

Hmm that's an interesting hire. Seems like the players had some say in the ordeal, which could be a good thing, as well as a bad thing

lol they should have just kept Mike Woodson if all they were going to do was hire their own assistant coach to be their head coach, instead of a totally different head coach. They should have replaced the whole coaching staff if they were going to do anything to it like they were beginning to.

What is this now for Mark Jackson? 0-6?

That makes 3 rookie coaches hired out of 4 coaches hired overall. I' glad to see someone other than the same old rehires year after year. The NBA needs some new coaching blood.

I don't want to wish anything bad for Drew, but I hope Atlanta crashes back into the cellar in the league. Yes, I'm still upset over them letting Woodson go after the strides that team made under his coaching.

Looks like Patrick Ewing will have to continue to wait his turn. BTW, what makes Ewing so sure he'd make a good head coach? He acts like because he's been an assistant for a few years he's entitled to becoming a head coach.

    I couldn't agree more!

I don't hate the Hawks players but I still think it was a dumb move to fire Woodson. He helped turn that team into a winner. What more could Mike Woodson have done with that team? I don't think anyone would have coached them to a championship or coached them much better than Woodson and I really doubt Larry Drew will.

    Agreed.

Hopefully JVG will get the Nets job and take whiney-butt Jax with him. Yes, yes, I know this is beneath Mark, maybe Jeff will let him get the title while Jeff does all the work. Or maybe they can be co-coaches (no offense to the stutters out there.)

Erm what type of attitude do you want a potential HC to have? I think I should coach when you think I'm good and ready?

His attitude is the type one should have. That being said I think nobody believes he can I mean he's coaching Dwight Howard and he's still the same limited center he's been since he's gotten into the league.

That being said you never know where the next great head coach always comes from to think Phil Jackson used to be a CBA coach back in the day.

    Sorry, forgot all about it.

But it's not my fault, this stuff's not supposed to be announced during Finals week. Yes, because I'm paying sooo much attention to that.

****, so that means another year of both of them on ABC. At least Buck'll be happy.

Hoopshype reports Drew is getting paid $1.2-1.3M, which is well below the NBA average of $3.4M. Ouch.

In other coaching news (that's not worth it's own thread), Doug Collins is hiring Quin Snyder as an assistant, and it's being said that if Izzo takes the Cavs job, he'll hire Larry Frank and Eric Snow for his bench.

Someone, I don't recall who, had either tweeted or reported a couple weeks ago that Atlanta was not willing to pay, throwing around a limit of $2mm or so.

Edit: it looks like it might have been Bethlehem Shoals (Fanhouse, FreeDarko) and maybe Ken Berger (CBS).

Atlanta might have the pending lockout in mind with this hire.

Of course that fits what I'd been saying too. Dump JOB and hire someone new for 2 years that would cost you the same as that extension year for JOB. This way you get some fresh blood in and don't take a hit if there is a lockout.

Right now the team probably doesn't need a big money/name guy, but they do need a guy who wants to teach and develop young players.

I wonder how much we could have paid Lester Connor for 2 years of HC work?
