There are a few rumors that interest me, but I think my excitement comes from the fact that moves will be made this year. I expect a trade on draft night. I would do the Philly trade, but the latest rumor of Rush/#10 for Sessions/#16/#23 would be great (if it's actually being talked about by both teams). If Larry could pull off both, he would have my vote for GM of the century!!!

Why waste a late 1st on Vasquez? It would be easier for the Pacers to acquire an earlier 2nd round pick to get him. I'm an advocate of getting an earlier 2nd round pick for someone like Jordan, Robinson, Vasquez, Torrance, Garcia.
    Agreed. I really like Vasquez.

Well now, lets not get carried away! I believe Mullins has to be a front runner for that award with unloading 2-4 year albatross contracts of Murphy and Dunleavy off on Bird/Walsh.

I must say "IF" Bird did get that trade accomplished he would have elevated his status of GM/PBO in many eyes... mine included. Unfortunately, I just feel it's just another rumor.

Easy to say when it's not your money.
I've already said I'd get tickets if we got Turner. I had tickets from when I graduated college until Bird sent me a letter, the same week Reggie announced his retirement, informing me my ticket price was going up 60%. I put my money where my mouth is.

I think the trade rumors are just something to keep this board going in the down time. We get to think of how much beter we could be with whatever player we are talking about, and we get to have people complain about how much the persons salary is.
Am I excited, kind of. I am excited when some the the rumors we here about actually have the pacers name attached to them in the media. Will any of them ever happen, probably not. We will probably see something off the wall from Bird that we haven't even thought of, if anything.

In all honesty I don't think I can be excited by almost any trade (barring a blockbuster) or any draft pick (again barring some form of franchise changing player) until we get rid of our current coach.

    Yea, it's that bad.

O'Brien is the proverbial turd in the punchbowl. No matter how good the punch is mixed there's still that turd in there.
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

    I am inclined to agree.

I've been trying to rationalize JOB with the Pacers for another year, and it's just becoming really difficult to swallow.

I like Jim, I really do. I think he is a good guy who loves the game.
But he is just NOT the coach we need right now... In regard to both long and short term team development and success.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:

    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. i can't answer for count, but for me, it would take a much better roster (either presently better or potentially better) than what we have now.

yes i want a new coach AND new players, but of the two i think the roster is a bigger problem and harder to fix.

edit: and sadly, i don't expect any of the big roster-fixing moves this year any more. if it's true that we're not looking to add any salary, then adding one future starter (either from draft or trade) is the most i'd expect the pacers to do.

I'll answer these in more detail when I have more time later today or tonight, but for now, I largely agree with what wintermute says.

I think O'Brien is flawed, and he did make mistakes this year. However, I still consider him a lesser problem than the roster construction, and I do not consider him to be a limiting factor at this time.

I would not have been upset had they fired O'Brien, and there were points during the season that I thought (and wrote) that firing him was probably appropriate. However, I never viewed it as something that would have a significantly positive effect, as long as the roster remains what it is.

I'll get into more specifics on O'Brien later, as well as what kinds of roster moves would excite me.

Most rumors aren't even feasible, so it's hard to get excited about them. I'm still in the minority that would like to trade back in the draft for more picks, or a trade that nets the Pacers a good player and a pick in this lottery. I'm not really expecting the former, but the latter is a more likely possibility. I feel no more than 2 of the expirings "at most" will be traded if at all. To me Murphy has to be the "1" expiring that has to be traded for 2 reasons... his trade value will never be higher, and to get rid of Jimmy's crutch to develop other players and to influence the "possible change" of his system for his last year as the Pacers coach.

Oh, a trip or two to the 8 Seconds Saloon, Club Rio, etc. where questionable things occur during his visit, coupled with poor decision making during the course of the evening (which would be inevitable).

He would be run out of town on a rail, then, as he should be.

There's some truth in that, especially if you're looking at winning this year. Replacing Obie with a decent coach doesn't make this a winning season.

On the other hand, I can imagine myself enjoying watching Roy/McBob/Granger/Rush/AJ playing a relatively conventional offense and defense. I can't imagine myself enjoying Troy/Foster/Granger/Dunleavy/TJ playing Obieball.

So if the question is winning games in 2010-2011, then yeah the coach isn't the biggest problem. But if the question is getting me to enjoy watching the games, the coach should be the first to go.
