Ricky Rubio is promising NBA fans they'll get to see his razzle-dazzle, but not before the 2011-12 season -- and not necessarily with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

I have to say, a lot of this is old news. It was already assumed when he went back to Spain that he would be there for 2 years minimum. It's also the worst kept secret in the league that Rubio doesn't want to play in Minnesota.

My guess is he'll let the TWolves know that he'll stay in Spain and count his cash until he's traded. Minnesota has their franchise PG in Johnny Flynn, so they have little to lose by trading him. It was idiotic to take he and Flynn in the first place. They'll never get equal value for what they gave up for Rubio.

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

Wonder what the asking price will be.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

My question is, who here would be willing to do #10 for Rubio's rights knowing it'd be at least a year before he comes here?

    I would without a second's hesitation.

They'll ask high, and after a year of getting turned down, they'll bring their price down.

Yeah it was pretty much known last year that he would stay atleast two years in Barcelona, they wouldnt have paid that ridiculous buyout for one year rental. Im not sure he doesnt want to play for Minnesota, what im sure of is he shouldnt have signed that ridiculous contract when he was a teen in the first place. Givony said in his last podcast that agents get a cut from buyouts which makes for some shady bussines, looking after their own interests instead of the players.

Who thinks Rubio will come to Indy any more than Minny? Pass.

He's not proven and he clearly is calling his own shots, plenty of potential for Pacer letdown there.

I have to say, this is one of the rare cases where I don't blame him. Rubio was Minnesota's franchise PG for ten whole minutes. There isn't enough evidence for me to believe he only wants to play in a big market. I don't think he'd turn down a chance to run his own NBA offense anywhere.

Obviously this would be addressed before any type of deal would go down, but there is this news from prior to last year's draft...

According to the source, Rubio’s decision is going to come down to two things: winning and the role he’ll play for the team that picks him. The size of the market of the team that drafts him is apparently irrelevant, since his appeal will be on a global scale, reaching far past his team’s city limits.

    *snip*

Behind the scenes, efforts will be made to steer him the direction of the teams that appear to be most attractive, mainly Sacramento, Dallas, Indiana, Portland and New York, although not all those teams may have the assets or the interest level needed to get a deal done with Memphis.

There's plenty of potential letdown nearly everywhere. On the flip-side, if Rubio actually lives up to his potential he would not only the best point guard we've had since Mark Jackson, he'd likely surpass Jack and become one of the elite point guards in a league overflowing with talent at the position.

    I'll take my chances.

Perhaps he'll never come here. Perhaps he is just more comfortable playing in europe.

i wonder if he would find something wrong with any nba team or city. No evidence to suggest he really wants to be here. I'll pass.

My thinking is Minnesota will sell low because they know he'll never play for them and he did mention he would like to play for Bird, so for once Bird's presence will benefit the Pacers. I would go back to the Jefferson-Granger trade and ask for Rubio, Minnesota would at least consider it now.

Why would a guy enter the NBA Draft if he wasn't positive he'd be coming over immediately?

    In a heartbeat...

I think in a few years Rubio can become the 2nd or 3rd best player for a contending team

Me too. The Pacers have already shown they don't give a rat's *** about next year, so why not. Provided he's actually gonna come over, that is.

Plus, it's another $3M we wouldn't have to pay next year. The more I think about it, this is probably TPTB's greatest wish.

My problem is, I can't see Kahn accepting such an obvious defeat so soon. Tough to justify trading the 5th pick for the 10th the next year.

I wouldn't offer anything more than the # 10 pick for Rubio. I'm pretty confident that Rubio will never put on a T-Wolves jersey. I might throw in S. Jones for the heck of it.

Rubio isn't coming to Indiana no matter how much fans want him. Bird is on the hot seat to produce next season, and he can't squander this years pick on a player who won't come to the NBA for a year or two. This club has to look as good as possible going into the summer of 011. No Rubio folks, it's just a pipe dream at best.

I don't think Bird is on the hot seat either. He has always talked about his 3 year plan. If we don't have a descent roster going into the 2011 season, then Bird might be in trouble. I think the Simons put their trust in him that he wil turn it around by then.

Bird seems not to show much emotion, so how can you really tell by his actions?

Not by how he acts, but the moves he makes. Every single move he makes, and does not make, every word out of his mouth, is about clearing cap space for next year. You can argue that that is mandated from Simon, but if so, and he were worried about his job, I think there would be at least some evidence of him straining against it.

More simply, if Larry felt he needed to win next year or else, I can't possibly imagine him sticking with Jimmy. Even that points towards him looking for a clean slate next year. Jimmy's contract will be up and he can (hopefully) get a coach that fits whatever roster he is able to put together.

They'd probably rather just have the #10 pick.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

Granger and Rush for Jefferson, #4, and Rubio rights.
