The Los Angeles Clippers today acquired veteran shooting guard Kerry Kittles from the New Jersey Nets in exchange for a future second round draft pick. Kittles, who led New Jersey to consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003, holds career averages of 14.3 points and 2.6 assists per game during his eight year career.

“We are very pleased to announce the addition of Kerry Kittles, who is a talented player with a great work ethic,” said Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. “Kerry plays hard on both ends of the floor and has a great feel for the game. He is also a veteran player who brings a tremendous amount of playoff experience to our roster.”

Drafted by New Jersey with eighth overall selection in the 1996 NBA Draft, Kittles played in all 82 regular season games for the third time in his career last season and averaged 13.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Kittles was also named the Atlantic Division Winner for the 2003-04 NBA Sportsmanship Award, a distinction also bestowed on Clippers forward Elton Brand, who was the recipient of the Pacific Division Award.

“Our objective all along has been to add talented players and we are very pleased with the acquisition of Kerry Kittles, who is the perfect fit for our team,” said Clippers Head Coach Mike Dunleavy. “Kerry is a terrific defender, ball-handler and perimeter shooter who will enhance our team chemistry.”

Kittles, who shares the Nets franchise record with 54 playoff games played, has career playoff averages of 12.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Wow Kidd and Jefferson cannot be happy with this. I think both are as good as gone within the next year or so. If they do leave, that would make this the worse decontruction of a team since the mighty bulls fell.

there is no point at all in them keeping kidd, especially with a horde of first rounders coming their way. (I can't believe they couldnt even get a lottery protected 1st rounder for kittles...)

and jefferson is most likely gonna leave through free agency

Well caproom and picks are a rebuilding team's best friend. IT turned denver into a contender pretty quick. Maybe things wont be so bad for them in a few years.

also at insidehoops.com they are claiming that the Clips are not matching Phoenix for Quentin Richardson.

Phoenix is getting good and deep and very young.

If Dampier has to settle for the MLE, he could go to Phoenix since their weakness is at C.

oops... Q got the MLE. Maybe they target Damp via a sign-n-trade

The Nets still owe Mutombo 14 Million this season and Mourning 16 Million over the next 3 seasons.

I still have no clue what the hell they are doing though. With Mutombo coming off the books after this season that will free up a ton of money. Mourning's contract doesn't eat up a lot of cap space.

Huge mistake letting Kenyon Martin go IMO, his salary in Denver is large, but not in the top 30 among players salaries.

Dumping Kittles will allow the Nets to get Shareef won't it?

Word is the Nets are gonna sign Ron Mercer.

Except for outside shooting, not a huge drop-off.

Richard Jefferson better be everything Nets mgmnt thinks he is.

Well the truth is... The Nets proly figured they lost any "real" chance to contend when they let Kmart go.

Kidd isn't getting any younger...neither was Kittles. Mutumbo and Mourning are toast.

This team has Rebuild written all over it.

mutombo played for the knicks last year. the nets dont have to worry about him anymore.

the reason they let kittles go for a second round pick is because the trade gave them a $9.2 million dollar trade exception. so now the nets can go after abdur rahim because they would offer 9 mil in cap relief. or they can do a S&T for dampier. crawford is still available via S&T.

    they have options now.

No, Mutumbo's contract is still with NJ. Sucks for them.

Wow, if they really expect to replace Kittles with Mercer, they're in for a rude awakening. Even though Kittles is getting long in the tooth, his defense alone makes him a MUCH better player than Ron. Oh well, sucks to be them.

Nope, The Nets still owe him the money. They cut him, but his contract is guaranteed. The Knicks only owe him 5 million for this season, the Nets owe him the rest.

Is anyone else under the cap?

I think it's just the Hawks now, right?

Maybe NJ trades Kidd to Atlanta for Alan Henderson& draft picks, & I'm not joking.

It drops about 6.6M off payroll this year & another 8 after the season.

Kidd is gonna want out now but the Nets arn't gonna want to get back roughly 14.8 to salary back.

Kidd is starting to break down anyway.

    On a side note.......

Anyone want to start a Ron Thorn resigns watch?

I'll give him til August 2nd.

Other huge ending contracts they could trade Kidd for include Antoine Walker (Dallas would LOVE to dump him) and Damon Stoudamire. Portland adding Kidd would start being scary.

    Portland trades: Stoudamire, Abdur-Raheem
New Jersey trades: Kidd, Mutumbo's ending contract.

    Why New Jersey?

They get Shareef, and Stoudamire will play point, then both contracts are up and they can do what they want from there. They get the man they wanted so bad earlier, plus a ton of capspace, and even a temporary starting PG.

    Why Portland?

They get to swap Damon Stoudamire for Jason Kidd. You don't say no to that.

They also get to ship disgruntled Shareef for an expiring contract, and in this case simply thins out their forwards.

I could see both of teams doing this.

That's a good trade for both teams.

The Nets, though, could probably do that trade without moving Kidd. With a little incentive, the Blazers might do it just for the cap relief. How many picks does Jersey own?

Not that the Nets would need MM and Kidd, but Kidd could be moved for a good player. The Nets would need a SG or a center... Seattle? Who else needs a point guard?

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

Isn't Mournings contract off of the cap as long as he doesn't try to come back this year?

If so and they can move J.Kidd (not the hardest guy to move even at his money and age) the Nets' payroll will be less than the Bobcats.
