The Pittsburgh Steelers traded troubled wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft, sources confirmed Sunday night.

ESPN 1050 in New York first reported the story Sunday night. Holmes was contacted late Sunday and told that he was traded to the Jets, sources said.

Holmes had recently been accused of throwing a glass at a woman in a lounge. No charges have been filed against him, and Holmes' lawyer, Adam Swickle, told The Associated Press a male witness has taken responsibility for tossing the glass.

Holmes was entering his fifth season with the Steelers and has 235 catches for 3,835 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Holmes was cited for marijuana possession, a misdemeanor, in Pennsylvania in 2008. The Steelers made Holmes inactive for the game following the incident and he subsequently apologized.

He was arrested on a domestic violence charge in 2006 in Ohio, but that charge was later dropped.

As a player, though, Holmes has the talent to be a No. 1 receiver. He was MVP in Super Bowl XLIII.

The Jets are making a lot of good moves. I think they will also end up getting Jason Taylor. They have a very good chance at making it to the SB this year given they don't somehow regress.

Holmes may be a bit of a headcase, but he only faces a 4 game suspension this year and would likely be a big contributor to any SB run the Jets have.

He's a real playmaker. But he's also allegedly a real pain in the butt.

Receivers in the NFL are like small forwards in basketball. Its the easiest position on the roster to fill.

With Mike Wallace ready to move into the "deep threat" spot and with Randel El returning to play in the slot at the third receiver, he may not be missed all that much.

Still, his refusal to quit on the play led to several spectacular touchdowns in the playoffs/ Super Bowl. He's the guy that made Ben's "hang on to the ball for way too long" approach pay dividends. Wallace is a "first move" guy and Randle El's athleticism is starting to fade. Ben needs to be ready to throw the ball sooner (assuming he stays out of jail, of course.)

You sure its only four? Rumor is that there might be another shoe to drop... There's a reason that a former 25th pick, former SB MVP went for a fifth-rounder.

EDIT - and as just confirmed by the Post-Gazette, the fifth-rounder was a better alternative than an outright release (which I predicted last week to a few people in the real world, although I don't think I posted that here.)

It has been confirmed as 4 by a league source (per Adam Schefter). I think this is a big loss for the Steelers passing game. If they can get their smash mouth rushing attack back, it shouldn't be that bad..but if you see the same pass happy Steelers again this year minus Holmes, Big Ben and Co. will be sitting at home for the playoffs.

    from Florio at PFT:

If, in the end, the Steelers could have only gotten a conditional cold turkey sandwich for Holmes, they still would have taken the deal. If he had been released, he likely would have made a bee line for Baltimore.

If you see pass-happy Steelers they will always be sitting at home for the playoffs.

However, Santonio really struggled last season during the first ten weeks or so, was burning bridges with poor practice habits, and didn't play as good as his stats would suggest. Mike Wallace is ready to step in as the deep threat. Santonio picked up most of his TD receptions late in the season.

Regarding the four games, that is only the portion attributed to the substance abuse policy violation (which may have just been a missed test, not a flunked test). That doesn't include anything regarding the nightclub incident if charges are indeed levied against him. So depending on the outcome of that investigation, it could grow to something larger.

I see them stocking up that team with massive talent for a playoff run at us and New England. To run with the horses you need horses too. My only worry for them is that some of their new horses that are uber-talented are long in the tooth and may end up with the injury bug biting them in the butt. Don't get me wrong though, they will be good.
