    Default Pacers Digest history/background

Like a couple other people have in the past, I am studying a "fan community." I have chosen this one and just wanted a little background info or history on the site.

I was just curious as to where the name came from, maybe who started it, or the founding group maybe. Any little tidbits would be very helpful, thanks.

Quick version. Hicks was despondent after the Brad Miller trade, so a bunch of us followed him over here and have been on suicide watch ever since.

It all started back in 2006 when we decided that there was a terrible shortage of threads being ignored, so we started ignoring a new one. Then the Pacers stuff sort of sprang up around it. You can read all about it here:

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

However it was, I didn't make the cut.

I started PD in Aug '03. I believe I chose this name because I initially wanted a website AND a forum, not just a forum. The idea was to provide any/all Pacers news/rumors/articles/discussions that were "essential" to a Pacers fan.

When we get around to upgrading to vBulletin 4.0, we may finally start to realize that idea. I've got a handful or so of people on board to produce content for PD once we upgrade, using 4.0's built-in capabilities to produce articles and blogs that looks web 2.0-ish. I'm looking forward to that.

    Anyway,

In a nutshell: A lot of us were less than thrilled with how the IndyStar Pacers board was being run (not to mention some bad attitudes among the members), and I decided to try running a forum myself.

Very early on, a poster named kerosene reached out to offer advice on how to make the forum work (what kinds of rules I should have, how to handle things, etc.). He was a big help in getting things going in the right direction, and while there have been many mistakes made between then and now, it was his advice that kept things from completely unraveling in the beginning.

So he was the first admin brought on board, and obviously we have more now. kerosene himself seems to have disappeared. He's still technically an admin, but I haven't seen/heard from him in a long time.

We've had many different looks over the years. We've used 4 different forum softwares at one time or another (proboards, phpbb, bboard(s), and of course vBulletin).

We started at proboard (which is a free host that has advertisements and a mediocre forum software), I then spent a little on a shared-host and bought the URL pacersdigest.com. Then after a while some disgruntled person attacked the site (DoS), and my then-host basically said they wouldn't or couldn't help me unless I upgraded (for a price) to a dedicated server. So we went back to proboards for a little bit.

Then able came along and generously offered to give us a dedicated host for free (through his web hosting business, able-towers). Able continues to host us today. We've been with him since January 2004.

Regarding the userbase, initially it was made up of people from the IndyStar board, and some have stayed, some have gone, and over the past 6 1/2 years(!) many new faces have come and gone as well. Some from other boards, some not.
