Default Did we know Dick Harter was going to retire???

The Pistons gave him a plaque for service because he is retiring at the end of the season.

I'm not sure we knew this.

If so, hopefully that is a good sign that O'B is out.

Definitely caught me by surprise. I don't think we've heard anything from the Pacers so the timing of it seems a little weird. I understand he has Piston ties, but I'm not sure that was the right way to break the news.

But, like Brad said, maybe it signals an end for O'Brien as well?

Wow... how about instead of focusing on JOB for this one, we actually give a legendary man and a great teacher of basketball some much deserved appreciation for his dedication to the game and this organization. Thank you Dick Harter for all you have given to the game of basketball over your years. Defense wins championships.

To retire in a winning season would mean something but to retire in a losing season is irrelevant.
Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

I wasn't surprised he was going to retire soon, but I didn't know it was going to be after this season.

We should bring in a new assistant coach, maybe a former NBA head coach or Mark Jackson.

Retire....as in I know the Pacers are going to fire JOB at the end of the season and I know my job will be gone too?

Ricky Rigid retiring? There goes a serious chunk of one liner material.

A bit of odd timing, but it was the last chance this year for the Pistons to give him his due recognition. On the other hand, the Pacers will likely wait until the final home game to honor him.

I honestly wonder which crowd will be smaller. The one last night at Detroit, or the one for the final Pacers home game.

I agree that Harter's efforts throughout his career are praiseworthy and that he has had a larger impact on the franchises he has been a part of than he has been given credit for.

I do feel somewhat sorry that he is going out now with a team like ours under a system which absolutely thwarted any chance he had to show for one last time his ability to teach the fundamentals of defense. He has done his best I am sure, and I hope the Pacers organization gives him the proper recognition he deserves despite the fact we haven't been very effective at his specialty since his return here.

His contract is up after this season (as I would assume all the assistant coaches, I don't know that though) and he is 79 years old. Retirement seems logical to me. He doesn't do and maybe isn't capable of doing what he has done in the past.

I wouldn't read too much into this as far as the other coaches on the staff

So long to one of the greatest names in basketball.

Shame it ends this way.....I choose to remember his contribution as the d-coordinator under Bird for three years. He did an awesome job with that bunch.
