Default Hypothetical Question - Where does O'Brien coach next?

Please set all biasness and harsh criticism aside, but if Coach O'Brien were to be released from his contract this offseason, would he desire to coach again? If so why? Which franchise do you see taking a chance on him and why?

Please keep this free of any kind of character bashing and what have you.

I think he'd be better off in college.

His method of vets over rookies is typically a good idea in college. (seniors over freshman) He could recruit the type of player he wants as well. Many college teams play the way Jim wants to play, and that sort of offense would most likely work better there.

I think he'll always want to coach.

I'm doubtful any other NBA team will/would hire him any time soon. He had, what, 3 years where he was out of the league before we hired him?

He'll definitely want to coach again, but I dont think another NBA will make the same mistake we did.

Having failed at his last two stops (Philly and it's looking likely here), I can't see any reason why anyone would take a gamble on him. It's not as though he's a coach for a serious contender, and he's not exactly an asset at developing young players either.

He might be a name to look at in the college game though. His system of non-stop three pointers would probably work well if given the right personnel, and apparently, he has given Butler's Brad Stevens some play help offensively.

Isiah had the 'maybe' he's still learning thing going for him... O'Brien has the 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' problem going for him.

I expect the Pacers are his last go 'round in the NBA unless he totally turns the franchise around next season. I'm hoping he's not even given that opportunity... but I'm not convinced he won't be.
O'Brien has been fired! Yay! What took so long?

He'd make a good assistant on a team who needs offense.

He will be an espn contributor again. I just think that is easier. Maybe he coaches college, but that is a different world altogether.

I think he will be an assistant wherever Troy Murphy gets traded to. Don't worry Troy, Jim will never leave your side.

I could see him either getting hired as an NBA assistant or some role in college, but I don't see him being a NBA head coach again in the near future.

    LOL.

To answer the question though, my guess would be the college ranks or as an assistant to a defensive minded head coach.

Florida International University. I think that the 7-25 Panthers might have need for someone to continue their rich tradition of running a "quick" offense with an undersized squad designed to create mismatches on the floor.

I think from his radio show interviews that O'Brien has too dominant a personality to go back to being an assistant coach in the NBA. I could see him landing a job in college or going back to working for ESPN.

I see the Pacers winning possibly 6 more games this season, and the Pacers finishing at around 30-52. The winning will shoot the Pacers back to mediocrity in the draft. The wins will allow Bird to let Jimmy start the 2010-11 season as the Pacers coach. Once not being the Pacers headcoach, I don't ever envision seeing Jimmy being a HC in the NBA again. (I've been saying this for quite some time.) My guess is he'll go back to analyzing NBA games on either tv or radio. Whatever he chooses to do after his stint with the Pacers is over I wish him well.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_O'Brien_(basketball,_born_1952)

Take a look at his Wiki page. I found this rather ironic "During the 2003-04 NBA season, however, O'Brien consistently fought with Celtics' general manager Danny Ainge over short-term versus long-term goals."

I honestly think he will go coach in Philadelphia at one of the universities there. St. Joe's is where he went, but they have Phil Martelli. Villanova, Jay Wright. Drexel, Bruiser Flint. Temple, Fran Dunphy.

UPenn fired Glen Miller in December, so they will be in the market for a coach this off-season, since they have an assistant as interim coach. Also, LaSalle has Dr. John Giannini, who has not been spectacular in his 5 seasons. I think he might be on the hot seat a bit, and I believe LaSalle to be a higher profile program than UPenn as well. Just some ides, but I think that will be a much better role for him, since he will be closer to family and won't have as much demand to travel as he gets older. He would have a great gig that continues to pay him well and provides him great benefits into retirement.

I really like Jim O'Brien as a coach. I love that he still wants to compete on a nightly basis. It is NOT what's best for the Pacers necessarily right now, but I admire his passion to win. That works great in college basketball. Not in the NBA where his coaching style is less suited for success. That would work much better in a college system where there is a larger differential in athleticism.

And those that want to debate his system working in the playoffs, his win against the Pacers as a 6 seed was the APEX of his career. I felt like that series was less a function of them beating us and moreso us handing them the series on a silver platter. They then were swept in an utter blood bath by the Nets. We probably would have lost to the Nets but it would have been a much better series.

EDIT: I was wrong. He took Boston to the ECF in 2002. That was the apex of his career. My apologies. They set a single game playoff record for most threes in game 5 against Philly.

My initial thought was close enough to Philly - Seton Hall. But that would require him to take the job this summer, so that's unlikely.

Why would he go to college at this point? He wasn't working in college before and didn't seem to be pressing for a coaching job in general. He seems to have little tolerance for the frustrations of working with kids.

No way another NBA team gives him a chance, makes no sense.

I agree that he doesn't appear to have much interest in being an assistant, it doesn't appear to fit his personality.
