    Default Report: Iverson facing trouble

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4975922

Multiple NBA sources say Allen Iverson is facing alcohol and gambling issues that have derailed his career and threaten his post-basketball well-being, Stephen A. Smith of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports in a column published Monday.

According to multiple NBA sources, there is widespread concern that the four-time NBA scoring champion, who left the Philadelphia 76ers in February to deal with his daughter's illness and will not return this season, "will either drink himself into oblivion or gamble his life away," Smith reported.

Iverson's gambling problem is serious enough that he has been banished from casinos in Detroit and Atlantic City, N.J., according to Smith.

The report comes as Iverson is dealing with significant personal problems.
Iverson's wife Tawana filed for divorce on March 4, the same day the Philadelphia 76ers announced that the All-Star guard would not return for the rest of the season. In the divorce filing, made at Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta, Tawana Iverson said the couple's 8˝-year marriage is "irretrievably broken" and sought full custody of the family's five children, child support and alimony.

Iverson, who played 25 games for the Sixers this season, returned to Atlanta in February to be with his family and deal with an undisclosed illness affecting his 4-year-old daughter, Messiah.

Smith, who has covered Iverson closely for years, wrote in Monday's column that Iverson needs someone with "the ideal combination of compassion and toughness" in his life. And former Temple coach John Chaney said that person is John Thompson, Iverson's former college coach at Georgetown.

"[Thompson] is the one guy who'll have a chance of slowing this train wreck down, who could wrap his arms around Iverson and have an impact, because clearly it has not been done," Chaney said, according to Smith. "But there's still this one question: Will [Iverson] listen?"
Iverson started the season with the Memphis Grizzlies but only played three games, amid disagreements over playing time, before announcing a short-lived retirement. He signed the 76ers as a free agent in December, making a tearful return to the city where he spent his first 10˝ seasons, won four scoring titles, earned the 2000-01 MVP award and led the Sixers to the 2001 NBA Finals.

Iverson was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2006 and played for the Nuggets through 2008, when he was dealt to the Detroit Pistons.

Iverson always had the wrong attitude and rejected "what works" in society. Now he doesn't have his game to pick up the pieces. What a mess he's made.

The saddest thing about this is that many people idolize him, his attitude and his ways...and end up paying a very high price for it. Really, the only word for Iverson is stupid.

It's really sad. All that talent wasted by enablers instead of somebody telling him the truth...He's probably a hall of famer, but he could have been a lot more instead of "Practice?"

"But, first, let us now praise famous moments, because something happened Tuesday night in Indianapolis that you can watch a lifetime’s worth of professional basketball and never see again. There was a brief, and very decisive, and altogether unprecedented, outburst of genuine officiating, and it was directed at the best player in the world, and that, my dear young person, simply is not done."

Despite my feelings about him as a basketball player and Pacers rival for many years, I just hope that he gets his life in order and is able to find happiness and peace. He obviously is wrestling with his own personal demons, and no matter how much you may hate someone on the court as an opponent, you never want to see them suffer in "real life".

He will be in my prayers.

    Ugh, Iverson!

You had the opportunity to use your riches to provide permanent wealth for all of your descendants and you screwed it up. You could have bought the best financial adviser money could buy. Your great grandchildren, if they were not athletically endowed could have gone to the best private schools in the country and if they worked hard there, they could have ended up at Harvard or Yale and turned into one of the world's best lawyers or politicians, or doctor or whatever.

You had the American Dream in your fingertips and you pissed it all away at a gambling table in seedy old Atlantic City, NJ. Shame on you! What a tragedy!

Can't thank this enough. Alcoholism and gambling addiction are serious illnesses that can plague anyone. I know that we tend to hold these things against pampered athletes, but I still feel for them, especially when they have families, children, etc. Iverson might be selfish, but that's still someone's father that's sick, someone's son, etc.

I doubt anyone here would wish these things on him. I just don't see where it's wrong to feel compassion. I understand resentment of these seemingly undeserved resources more than anyone - it's ridiculous how my father has worked for almost 40 years of his life but has not been able to find a job for two years despite applying to nearly everything available, that he's never been entitled to anything - but I just can't bring myself to be so callous as to say "serves him right" or "this was a long time coming", etc.

Not accusing any of you of doing that, by the way.

Ah, so his behavior is not at all his own fault? He had no free will to make his own decisions?

This is part of what is wrong. People need to be accountable for their decisions, not lay the blame elsewhere.

I hear what you're saying, but personally, I can't find myself to feel one whit of compassion. It's the broad spectrum of his life. He has spent a lifetime of pretty much ignoring anyone who tried to make him a better person. A better man. At some point, as an adult, the light has to click on, especially when you have a family.

I feel compassion for those who can't help themselves, or in situations they can't control. I don't wish ill of him, but I cannot find it in myself to feel compassion.

I deal with alcoholics and gamblers every day, who are trapped in a spiral of poverty. They have bad role models and enablers around them. They don't have the money to truly avail themselves of certain resources. They have no options and no hope. A.I. had money, the potential influence of good, wise people....and he always chose the path of destruction for himself and his family.
Hey! What're you kicking me for? You want me to ask? All right, I'll ask! Ma'am, where do the high school girls hang out in this town?
