Thread: Any interest in bringing back Fred Jones?

Default Any interest in bringing back Fred Jones?

Was just watching the latest episode of Pacers Crate and they had Freddie Jones on. I guess he was playing in Italy earlier this year and injured himself and is now back in Indy doing some rehab. He still owns a house in Indy and plays in the Indy NBA Summer League too.

I saw him play a few times last summer during the Indy NBA Summer League and he still has game and a quick step. He did play 50+ games last year with the Clippers and averaged a little more than 7.5ppg

I don't know that he'll come in and average 25ppg, but I think he could come back for fairly cheap and would be a solid bench contributor. He could play both the 1 & 2 and always seemed to be a fan favorite.

For those interested in watching the interview, watch here: www.nba.com/pacers/news/crate.html

Unfortunately, despite being likeable and having hops when he was here before at a younger age, he wouldn't help out even for a vet minimum except as a replacement for...

Nope, I can't think of a single player we have that he could replace currently on our roster. He probably wouldn't be bad at backing up Croshere on the pre and post game shows.

He'd be another terrible fit in O'Brien's system because he can't shoot from distance.

That's not really true. He's shot nearly 39 and 37% from three the last two seasons. Also, one thing he could do well is run the floor.

...but as a 6'2" 31 year old SG, at this point he's not as good as Luther Head. We don't need Fred because we already have guys like D Jones, Rush, Head, Watson, Price, Ford...all guys who are at roughly the same level.

I would have to say no, unless he can be had very cheaply for the end of the bench. I really liked Freddy as a person, but as a player he was just too built like a PG to play enormous minutes at SG.

We'll need somebody to fill the roster...but not in his position.

Why not, we can't get any worse.

Plus I liked Freddie, he at least put out effort.

Kind of surprised with all the Freddie hate. I mean I felt your pain on draft night when his name was called ahead of others I was hoping for......but I thought he was a pleasant surprise while he was here. He was a real bright spot during the time we were going through all of our suspensions after the brawl in Detroit. Im not saying Im an advocate of bringing him back as Im just not sure he fits what we need (although I would not be upset having him as a lockeroom guy who may play whenever we need him due to injury) All in all mostly just surprised at the disrespectful way most have dismissed him in this topic.......I enjoyed Fred while he was here.

As did I. He never tried to be something that he wasn't and take over ballgames, He got his 10-14 points a night and played pretty solid defense. Plus, he was a great finisher at the rim. We could do a lot worse than Freddie.

We don't need another undersized sg. Nothing against Fred, but he never lived up to anything when he was here. If I remember right he was very streaky. He could score but then he would go away for alot of games and do nothing. By the way he never could play pg here. They tried to play him at the point a few times and he couldn't hack it. He was just a small slasher sg who got lucky and won the dunk contest. Didn't Jason Richardson miss his final dunk or something? At 31 years old I don't think he will make any NBA roster next year.

Hey, let's not be dissin' Fred Jones. He might not fit in here now, but he's a good basketball player. I enjoyed his contributions while he was here, particularly the steal/breakaway dunk in Ben Wallace's grill:

    And you know that!
There are two types of quarterbacks in the league: Those whom over time, the league figures out ... and those who figure out the league.

I remember Sarunas saying that Fred treated him pretty bad in the locker room
and on the court because he didn't appreciate people coming from overseas to play in the NBA. If that's true, we don't need him in our locker room again (and it's pretty funny that he played in Italy).

no. i can't see the point in bringing back a guy who would do nothing for this team that we don't already have. not even for the minimum.we already have plenty of guys at his spot.
he may be a nice guy and perhaps a good locker room presence but, i want more from a player drawing any salary than that. i could be a nice guy and good locker room presence for the league minimum too.
there is no need/use for fred jones on the pacers anymore.
