Default Wizards probably trading Caron Butler to Dallas for Josh Howard

Not 100% confirmed, but it sounds about 98% there. Deshawn Stevenson is also going to Dallas, with Mav filler (Q. Ross or Tim Thomas) going to Washington.

    From Adrian Wojnarowski's Twitter:

Wizards near completion of trade that sends Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson to Dallas for Josh Howard and one other player, source says.

The Wiz and Mavs still discussing whether Quinton Ross or Tim Thomas will go Washington with Howard, league source says.
    5 minutes ago from UberTwitter
Yahoo reported overnight that trade was in advanced talks but Dallas backed away for a bit. Mavs returned to today to get it done.

hmm so much for Haywood being added. Butler should be able to really help the Mavs

Butler is going to Dallas, but Wiz and Celts will continue to discuss a scaled down deal for Jamison, source says. Boston still interested.

Oh man. Forget what we'd get from Cleveland... we could have traded Z to Washington for Caron Butler!
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

I guess it depends on what the Wiz think of Josh Howard. If they just see the expiring, then I see where anthem is coming from. If they expect Josh Howard to be more, then I understand that as well

So Wiz get another SG: Foye, Stevenson, Miller, Young, Arenas (pretty much), and now Howard?

and a retread PF (Gooden) while giving up an All-Star and excellent Center.

    Let me correct myself:

You give up an All-Star SF with good character and a leader of your team for a non-All Star SF OF THE SAME AGE who SMOKES POT WHILE GIVING UP YOUR VERY GOOD STARTING CENTER AND NOT GETTING A QUALITY POST PLAYER BACK!?

correction: they give up an all-star SF with another $10 mil left on his deal and get a SF with an expiring contract.

Josh howard was an All Star two years ago, Butler was last year,so yeah they are All Star players, I like Howards game more, the only problem is that he is always hurt.

Wizards are tanking and making a run at 2010 Free Agents. I think it's a good move. Washington is an underrated city and market. If I was them, I'd hold out for at least a pick or a young prospect for Butler though. If the Mavs don't include Beaubois, I wouldn't do it.

@STEIN_LINE_HQ Deal might not be finalized before Monday, but five main pieces are Josh Howard/Gooden to WAS and Butler/Haywood/Stevenson to Mavs

The Mavericks appear to have agreed on the major points of a trade that will send Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton to Washington for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson.

The deal is not completely done, but a source said that the pieces of the trade have been tentatively agreed upon.

The trade would also require league approval, which could take until after All-Star Weekend.

Howard's contract for 10-11 is a team option, which could yield a payroll savings of $11 million for the Wizards.

Mavs come out in great shape if this goes down........... they've always lacked that toughness which all three of these guys bring.

I think that this would only push the Celtics to make a more concerted run at Jamison....which in turn would push the Cavs to make a run at Murphy.

Think about how good the Mavs will be now.

    Kidd
    Terry
    Butler
    Nowitzki
    Haywood

Plus Marion, Gooden, Dampier, and Barea. Thats a very good team. They'll be the #2 team in the West once this goes down.
"I keep wondering the same thing. Last week they had the 4th worst record in the league, had an 11.9 percent chance of winning the lottery and were in line to land a franchise type player like Derrick Favors or DeMarcus Cousins. This week? They have a 1.7 percent chance of winning the lottery, have the 8th worst record and are in line to draft Cole Aldrich or Greg Monroe. Way to go Jim O'Brien. Rest Danny Granger the rest of the season (if it isn't too late) and give Josh McRoberts lots of minutes. That ought to do it." - Chad Ford on winning meaningless games

Way to go Jim, you may have just put our franchise back another 4+ years.

I think Gooden is supposed to be one of the players going to Washington.

The theory is that Gooden will likely be bought out, in which case I'd fully expect that he'd do an about-face and return to Big D.

This deal, if done as it reads right now, makes Dallas a clear #2 in the West. I think it elevates them above Denver without question.

By the way, is there a better (non-rookie contract) value for a big man right now than Haywood? He's posting about 9/11 with 2 blocks and is making $6M.

I'm seeing a bunch of sources that say Singleton is not part of the trade.

It doesn't make much of a difference.

If spreedom is correct about Gooden, then perhaps Dallas has to include an extra player to make room for his return. I'm not sure how many players the Mavs currently have on their roster, though.

Dallas currently (before trade) has 14 I believe. Post-trade (assuming they use their TPE to acquire one more on a side deal) they would have 15, as they're swapping 3 for 4. That would mean that they'd need to either waive one player or make another trade -- I'm assuming in a case like that they'd probably waive one of Singleton or Tim Thomas, depending which players they keep. I'd guess Singleton since Thomas fits a need as a shooter off the bench and has been playing pretty well in limited minutes.

Imagine if the deal goes through as Howard/Gooden/Ross, with Gooden returning?

    Kidd/Barea/Beaubois
    Butler/Terry/Carroll
Marion/Thomas (though Butler will play a lot of "backup" time here as well)
    Nowitzki/Gooden/Najera
    Haywood/Dampier/(Oberto?)

That is a scary looking team if you ask me.
Last edited by spreedom; 02-13-2010 at 02:06 PM. Reason: Added Oberto, who I assume Washington will want to send to Dallas.
