Goodell: NFL could ban 3-point stance

A ban on the three-point stance? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says it's possible.

Concerned about concussions, Goodell said the league will keep looking for ways to make the game safer. Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation" hours before the Super Bowl, he didn't rule out the idea of banning the three-point stance for linemen to reduce the ferocity of collisions at the line of scrimmage.

"As you'll see tonight, you'll see a lot of players that never get down in a three-point stance," Goodell said Sunday. "So it's possible that would happen."

While science is still trying to determine the long-term effects of concussions, Goodell said, the league has made progress in increasing awareness about the severity of such injuries.

"For many years the culture had been quite different - that concussions weren't serious injuries," he said. "I think we have changed that culture and made sure that people understand they are serious, and they can have serious consequences if they're not treated properly."

Goodell has met with NFL competition committee co-chair Rich McKay to begin evaluating possible rules changes.

The NFFL is right around the corner. National Flag Football League.

I'm sure there's more that can be done in the area of helmets and playing surfaces that would contribute greatly to fewer and less significant injuries.

I highly doubt they get rid of the 3 point stance.

Sure... you'll see some players that never get into a three-point stance on passing plays. But on a running play?

This guy's . And he doesn't seem to understand leverage.

Its really bugging me how much basketball is turning into football (allowing all kinds of unnecessary contact) and football is turning into basketball (limiting the contact that makes football so compelling in the first place.)
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

It wont ever happen. Roughly half the linemen in the league use a 3 point stance at one point or another...defensive tackles rely heavily on the 3 point stance for penetration. Teams that rely heavily on their DLine for pass rushing would be the most greatly affected by this rule. It would give OLinemen a huge advantage.

Fortunately for myself, because the Pats generate no pass rush whatsoever I wont be adversely affected by this rule if it happens.

When I first heard about this I immediately thought that D tackles would go to a 4 point stance or is that also being looked in to? I think this would affect a lot of the between the tackles running more so than the pass rush. I mean what is the league average for DT sacks/year? I bet its around 3.

Obviously intended to boost scoring and stats while emphasizing speed instead of power. Great for the Colts, bad for the league.
