    Default Bird Slams Harrington in Press Conference

    This is a quote of Bird's from Pacers.com

    I read it as a slam towards Harrington in particular.

    “We hate to see Al Harrington leave our team, but we are extremely happy to have Stephen Jackson as a member of the Pacers,” said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird. “He is a hard worker and dedicated to winning. [b]Unlike most players that concern themselves with minutes, all he talks about is winning and pursuing another championship.” [b]

    Two=the number 2
    Too=means "also"
    To=many definitions-also known as the one to use when the other 2 (two, too) do not apply.

    Their=shows ownership-'it is their house'
    They're=they are
    There=many definitions-also known as the one to use when the other 2 (their, they're) do not apply

    Sorry but it bugs me when these are used incorrectly when I read posts on PacersDigest.com.

    Indirect slam at worst, a compliment to Jackson at best.

    Al played 30mpg last year; I don't think his mpg was ever a question by him or anyone.

    Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

    Bird didn't need to say "unlike other players". It would have been better if he said that Steven is about winning championships.

    It's a bit ironic that that statement was made about a player who turned down an offer to resign with a championship team and has a history of pouting. Well we'll see this season if Steven has out grown pouting.

    "They could turn out to be only innocent mathematicians, I suppose," muttered Woevre's section officer, de Decker.

    "'Only.'" Woevre was amused. "Someday you'll explain to me how that's possible. Seeing that, on the face of it, all mathematics leads, doesn't it, sooner or later, to some kind of human suffering."

    Considering he started the statement with "We hate to see Al leave our team..." I think you guys are reaching a bit here.

    I think it was meant as a compliment to Jackson and wasn't even connected to Harrington.

    I'm sure it could've been... I doubt it was....

    In any case... count me as glad to see Al Harrington gone. He totally lost me last season and I think his career has peaked. Unless he can overcome his selfish nature, increase his basketball IQ, and come to realize he isn't the next NBA superstar then he doesn't have much to look forward to.

    But maybe a change of scenery will be good for him.

    I think some of you are reading way too much into Bird's comments.

    One comment: This trade follows Walsh's history of not trading guys to soon. He is a big beleiver you don't trade a player until you know what you have. I think we all know what harrington is. He is not going to shock us.

    it is too early to trade Bender because we don't know what we have yet in him.

    Two benefits of this approach.

    You maximize a player's trade value and you don't trade someone who comes back to haunt your franchise.

    Exhibit A of the opposite approach is when the Blazers trade J.O.

    The statement is more about Jackson than Harrington. Bird is just happy to get a player that he wanted. No harm No foul.

    Good. I wish Bird would have bashed Harrington directly.

    I still don't get what Harrington wanted. 3rd biggest role on a top team in the league.

    Oh well, he'll find out the hard way that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

    Wish Al the best though.

    You seem to be indicating that it's just starting. That, my friend, is a fallacy.
    True.

    Let me rephrase then: There is going to be a lot MORE Al bashing now that he isn't a Pacer.

    Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

    I don't see Bird's comment as a slam either. Al has never complained about minutes.

    Sometimes you can say exactly what you mean and someone will read between the lines and take it another way.

    Paroxysmal thought: I could swear I read about Al's surgeon [when he had back surgery, I think his second year] saying something to the effect of "Al will be lucky to be playing at 25."

    Not that it had anything to do with the trade, just random pondering.

    I would have to say that LB might have thrown a barb at Al. It makes no sense to me for him to say that without someone to have that directed to. I know listening to the local sport radio show, Bill Benner rolled out the old, "you have to question a guy that holds his mins. above being on a winning team" then compared him to Jalen R. a little bit about wanting to be the man.

    Bill Benner/David Benner...ya never know :devil3:

    If you look at Bird's statement analytically, you will see that putting a "but" after the first part of the statement, totally negates the positive message. I'm a little bit partial to Baby Al, I hate to see him go.

    The Comment doesn't look directed towards Al , Here is what I think it all means

    He is saying Most players who we would or could have signed would have been concerned about mins and I think he is saying Jackson is willing to take a backup role and not a starting roll if that is needed and contribute in a meaningful way.

    Bird just made it short and sweet , I think alot of people are reading way , way too far into the comments.

    I agree! The comment about minutes was in reference to Jackson, not Harrington.

    Jackson said he didn't care about starting, or minutes, he just cared about winning. Bird's statement about most players concern themselves with minutes flowed naturally from that.

    People who think it is a slam at Harrington are reaching big time.
