    Default Pacers resign AJ

I don't know if this was posted yet, but it's a 4 year deal.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1839826

Indiana Pacers: The Pacers have reached agreement to re-sign backup point guard Anthony Johnson for four years, a source tells ESPN. He appeared in 73 regular-season games for Indiana, averaging 6.2 points and 2.8 assists. He played in 20 playoff games for Indiana and got bigger minutes in the Eastern Conference finals in place of an injured Jamaal Tinsley.

    thanks for the info!

wow, 4 years?!?! How old is he now, about 29?

I hope it's not for too much $$$.

I guess we can forget about Derek Fisher or Damon Jones...

I was one of the few that liked AJ. Fisher would of been a definite upgrade for the backup PG position, but I think AJ will do good just like he did last year.

Well that kind of sucks, hoped we could get something better back there. The Tinsley/AJ pg combo is always gonna be a weak spot for us vs other contenders. I guess this is alright though. AJ is okay, and we get some stability for awhile at the backup pg spot after going through about 5 of em in the last few years. But still..

Is there any reason why the Skinner deal has a Pacers logo next to it?

I was wondering that too, it got me all excited because it meant Pacers news and then it went into some crap about Skinner and the 76ers. Then I read about AJ and was happy that we had some Pacers news.

I like AJ too. Most are down on him because he doesn't run the offense as well as JT. But on the flip side he plays better D. Am I the only one that remembers him being able to keep Chauncey Billups under control?! And he's a good shooter to boot.

Now hopefully the contract is reasonable.

Also.....does anyone think that this increases the chance of Freddie being involved in a trade? It's beginning to look like he may be the odd man out. Some were speculating him playing backup PG, but now where? 3rd string PG. 3rd string SG? hmmmmmm

Netweeny's right, where does Fred play? He has two SGs and two PGs in front of him now.

As for AJ, I'm happy to have him back. He's a decent backup PG. Getting Fish would have been nice, but I can't complain too much. He won me over with his play in the ECF, where I thought we'd get killed with him in, and we didn't.

I mentioned this in another thread, but does anyone else find it odd that Johnson was signed today - on the first day contracts can be signed - while the jackson deal - which has been talked about for almost a week - wasn't consumated yet?

    a bit odd.

If I remember correctly, The general reaction to signing AJ last year was pretty similar, i.e.: "Jeez, why'd we do that?"

    Yes.

I have said all season long that AJ is one of the best backup point guards in the NBA. Is he the most talented? No. But he is so solid. The coaches must love him. Great locker room guy, one of the leaders on the team.

Name for me a better backup point guard.

I was thinking about making a very short list of maybe a few backups that I think might be better, and I was going to start with Troy Hudson.

    Yes Troy Hudson is better.

However will Troy be content backing up Tinsley and playing 15 minutes a night. yes I know he backed up Cassell last season, but the plan in Minny was to play Hudson and Cassell together for periods of the game, so Hudson would get if healthy 20 minutes per game, maybe a few more. I doubt a Tinsley Hudson backcourt would be effective at all.

Thank you. Someone who gets it.

I don't know why folks have fussed about AJ all season long. I suppose many never could get passed the Kenny vs AJ debate.

Neither player is a STARTING point guard in this league. However, AJ is an excellent BACKUP point guard. Steady, keeps errors to a minimum, hits open shots and plays very good defense.

The problem that this team has at the PG is NOT because of our backup PG. Any problems we have at PG is in the starting unit. Although Tinsley is an excellent distributor, he does not have adequate defensive skills nor is he a threat to score.

So any improvement we get at the PG will not come from AJ, it will come from an improvement in the starting PG. With AJ being signed for 4 years, I wonder if Larry and Donnie are not hedging against losing or even trading Tinsley as his rookie contract runs out. Or at least removing his ability to play hardball at the bargaining table.

Troy Hudson, Rafer Alston, Damon Jones, Derek Fisher. But hes alright IMO, but I would like to see him get reduced minutes and let a 3 string PG get some of his minutes. I think we need more athleticism in the PG spot. Brewer?

Well UB, you were asking for a backup PG who would be better than AJ, not necessarily one who would be happy behind Tins...

I'm fine with AJ. I thought he played well throughout the season, I think some of you guys expect too much from him.

He's the best, most consistent backup PG we've had since Travis Best. And I figure a lot of you would prefer AJ to Travis.

I also like the fact that we're getting all our pieces locked up long-term.
