Default Who would you like the Pacers to make a play for?

According to multiple NBA sources the following below is a list of players that are believed to be ACTIVELY available :

    Gilbert Arenas
    Tracy McGrady
    Andre Iguodala
    Caron Butler
    Elton Brand
    Brandon Bass

Of the players on the list, who would you like to see the Pacers make a run for and why?

I personally would love to make a run for Andre Iguodola. With Andre at the SG, and Granger at the SF we could have one heck of a strong defensive combo at the wings position. Andre also is a great team player, from all I have heard a gentleman off the court and stays clear of police blotters (extremely important in Pacerland )

He is an above average passer and is top ten in the league in steals.

Thats my pick, who is yours?

First and foremost I still want so bad for the Pacers to trade for Luke Ridnour to be our starting point guard. He's a good shooter, good passer, and is experienced without being too old. Those three are all important when looking for a new point guard for this offense.

Secondly, I wouldn't mind Iguodala either, but I don't realistically see us getting him.

To be honest none of them.

The Pacers need a point guard or another big.

    No thanks to Arenas.

McGrady is a wing and plus his best days are behind him. He would only be ok if you can dump say Murphy/Ford on the Rockets.

I like Iguodala but I don't think he makes this team that much better. Don't get me wrong he is a good player but I like what the Pacers have there in Jones/Rush for now at least.

Like Iguodlaa Butler just isn't enough of an upgrade, IMO.

Elton Brand...aren't his best days behind him?

Brandon Bass just isn't enough of an upgrade.

    1. Tracy McGrady..

His contract is up after this year, and his salary is big enough so that we'd end up dumping Ford and Murphy's contract. That's more a financial play though.

    2. Caron Butler

For two reasons. One, he's a really good player. Two, he's got one of the best contracts in the league. So if he doesn't fit, because either Granger can't play the four as well as we need or he can't play the shooting guard, his contract is so good that the Pacers could get an extremely good deal for him.

Pretty sure Iggy is only available in a package including Brand. They both have massive deals running for the next 4-5 seasons. We could probably land both for our 2011 expirings (Murphy, Dun, Ford, Foster).

I don't think DG, Iggy, and Brand lead us to a title though......so it's a no go for me.

We would have no cap space whatsoever to add to the team. We would probably be pinched on resigning Hibbert, Rush, Hansbrough, & Price too.

I think we need to hold onto Murphy, Dun, Ford, and Foster until next Feb. while developing the young guys. I would stick Murphy and Ford at the end of the bench until then. Those 4 guys will have huge value in 1 year. We can mix and match their contracts to make a solid deal for a star on a bad team that is looking to shed $$$.

I think we would be better off going that route as oppossed to waiting until the summer of 2011. There aren't many huge names in 2011, plus Indianapolis isn't exactly atop the FA desitnations.

You never know the position other teams will be in within a year. You may be able to combine those expirings with a pick and one of our young players to land a guy like Paul, Martin, Iggy, etc.

Out of the list you gave I would say Brandon Bass is the player. The deal he signed with Orlando is manageable (4 million per over the next 4 years) and I like what he would bring to the team, hustle in the post. Though he is not much a shot blocker. He isn't getting minutes in Orlando and I think he would welcome a trade. 16 million left on his deal, I like that!

I would like Elton, but his deal kills the idea. Plus I am a little suspect of his injury from the past. It seems he could be prone to another injury and then we would be stuck with another huge contract. 64 million left on his deal, no way!

No desire for Tracy to come to Indy, I just don't think we need him. I know he is attractive because of his status. Some mentioned the deal being Tracy for Ford and Murphy, but I don't see Houston doing this. It would shed 23 million from our payroll next year, so that would be good, but don't see Houston doing it. 23 million left on his deal

I like Iggy's style of play, but just not sure how he fits with us. Plus his deal is huge, wouldn't touch it. He is owed roughly 66 million on his deal.

Caron Butler is an attractive option, though he pretty much plays the same position as Granger. He has about 19 million left on his contract. I just don't see it happening, though I do like him as a player.

I like the idea of Brandon Bass, but I'd actually want Indy to make a run for Emeka Okafor ^__^ can you imagine both Hibbert and Okafor clogging the lane? It'd be a congestion fest!

On the other hand, how about Ramon Sessions? I know a lot of you guys were high on him as a free agent. He's still very young, very talented, and has a real shot at getting traded because of Jonny Flynn.

Unless its for our direct future and core, I don't think it's wise to take on long contracts (brand etc)

Your post makes a lot of sense. I think its obvious we need a defensive , low post PF, and a top PG. Unfortunately I dont think there are any truly available

    Sookie,

Do you think the Rockets would entertain a Murph/Ford package? One positive is I believe Houston is Fords hometown and he lives there in the off season. I actually would love that and even potentially look to resign T Mac

I would like to see Troy Murphy traded for an expiring contract, and let the chips fall where they may.

    This.

What we need to do is start looking at teams that would be willing to shed an All-Star in order to get under the luxury tax next season.

Honestly, I really haven't watched Houston enough.

To me, it depends on three things really.

Is Houston fooled by murphy's stats or do they feel they could put a use to him?

Does Houston think Ford would fair better in their offense?

Is TMac a big enough pain in the *** to get rid of?

Right now, Houston wants a lot for TMac, but other GM's aren't going to bite. Tmac is an aging injury prone star. That's not gonna get as much as Houston is making like.

So basically, when Houston gets desperate, then it's a possibility.

Antwaan Jamison: If the Wiz are really looking to blow things up, it would be nice to land Jamison some how. Maybe swap him for the stat stuffer Troy Murphy. They may close to the same money, but Jamison's contract is a year longer.

Devin Harris: If the Nets land the #1 pick in the John Wall lottery, you have to try and make a play for Devin Harris, and all-star calibur PG that would help the Pacers a ton

Kirk Hinrich or Tyrus Thomas: Not sure how we would do it, but if the Bulls have them on the market, perhaps we can find a way, even if another team is involved.

Given the choice (if a trade had to be made), I would go after a PG first, but I would actually go after Brandon Bass. Since Indiana is already amidst a "young movement" (Indiana only has two player above 30 in Foster/Watston with Dunleavy/Jones/Murphy turning 30 this year) to some degree, Bradon Bass would be excellent pickup as starting and/or backup PF. He's only 24 now and he's averaging 7.0 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and 55.2 FG% on 15.1 MPG. Second, his contract is very manageable. Of course, it would depend on how Tyler pans out though for Indiana once Murphy is gone which a Murphy trade is invetiable at this point IMHO. Hibbert needs a PF alongside him, not hovering arounding the 3PT line and can play SOME defense.

Oh man, a Butler/Granger duo at the wings would make me so happy I couldn't stand it.

Picking up TMac would be really good for the franchise as well (see my thread in the trade forum).

I think we can all agree that Elton Brand and Gilbert Arenas are, at this point, not even worth considering.

I don't see what Brandon Bass gives us, honestly. He's a nice player, but I really want to see how our current bigs work out. Do we need another developing big man?
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

The problem is that Caron Butler expires at the end of next year. Offering them contracts that expire at the same time (Murphy, Ford) does nothing for them.
