Thread: Dwight Howard: spitter

    Default Dwight Howard: spitter

    got this from slamonline.com

apparently he spits on the ball every time an opposing player shoots a free throw. Am I the only one who thinks this is bush league? Also Dwight's pregame dances are as thought out and insincere as Lebron's.

Superman has a nasty habit: “You learn something new every NBA game. On Saturday night, I learned that Dwight Howard spits on the ball. Every time a Warriors player went to the line to shoot two, after the first free-throw try, the Orlando Magic’s massive center asked the ref for the ball, spit on it and flipped it back to the ref. Seriously. ‘I’m just blowing on it,’ Howard fibbed with a smile when I asked him about it after the game. ‘I’m putting a spell on them.”‘

If he is actually spitting on the ball he should be ejected.

I still don't care about pre-game rituals. I just don't care if guys want to dance at that time or how choreographed the dances are. It's a matter of taste, I suppose, but doesn't impact or disrespect the game in my opinion.

Spitting on the ball seems like a much different matter. It is unhygienic and, well, gross. It is during the game yet doesn't have anything to do with the game of basketball and could perhaps even be considered taunting. If I were the ref that would be a technical foul for Dwight.

Instead of changing the design of the basketballs a few years back, the NBA and Spalding should've placed these on every ball:

Why in the hell would the ref allow him to continue doing that? He's not the shooter, he has no need to "see the ball". If I'm the ref I'm not going to let him do it just because he's going to spit on it, and then give it back to me!

Yes. Though honestly in this situation I am thinking WTF even more about the ref that allows this to happen. I mean, he has to touch the spit upon ball too. Yuck!

    To me? Absolutely.

Also, when the ball gets really slick sometimes refs will wipe it off. So why let someone intentionally put extra moisture on the ball before an opponent shoots a free throw?

Think an opposing coach will try and get one of the refs to call Dwight for a technical everytime he does this.

I honestly don't think it is that gross, we are talking about a basketball

OK, judgments of grossness aside - do you think this kind of thing has a place in the game of basketball?

Guys, I have to question the validity of the article. Can you imagine a ref allowing a player to do this, let alone putting their hands on the ball afterwords? I just don't believe that. I would think the opposing players would raise a fuss about it, if it were true.

    Same.
"I keep wondering the same thing. Last week they had the 4th worst record in the league, had an 11.9 percent chance of winning the lottery and were in line to land a franchise type player like Derrick Favors or DeMarcus Cousins. This week? They have a 1.7 percent chance of winning the lottery, have the 8th worst record and are in line to draft Cole Aldrich or Greg Monroe. Way to go Jim O'Brien. Rest Danny Granger the rest of the season (if it isn't too late) and give Josh McRoberts lots of minutes. That ought to do it." - Chad Ford on winning meaningless games

Way to go Jim, you may have just put our franchise back another 4+ years.

Does anyone remember really early in the season David Stern was encouraging players not to shake hands because of the swine flu? And now you have a player spitting on the ball with no repercussions? Doesn't add up...
