Default How to tell your getting old

Found myself listening to a few young kids in my shop talking about Kobe and how much better he is than Jordan ever was......I hate MJ he broke my heart more than once in the 90's but to say Kobe is much better than him and would destroy Jordan if they both played with each in their prime. The guys were between 19-21 but then they showed their youth because they kept bringing up his time with the Wizards....WTF.....Just Crazy

I feel the same way and I don't think 23 is too old.

My feeling is that Lebron will end up outclassing them both, and I can't stand Lebron.
    Already stoked for 2013-2014.

I solved this problem years and years ago when I agreed never to compare players to or with any players that I had never watched play. So anything before around 1978, I have no idea - So who is better between Wilt and Russell - I have no idea, won't enter into the discussion. Nor will I compare those players to any modern day players.

Youngsters! Now if they were discussing Wilt or Russell and you could remember seeing them play, you damn well know you are old.

Hmmm...guess I'm really old....Russell, Wilt, Oscar, Roger, West, Yup, I can remember all of them. However, to compare players of different eras is very hard as the rules have changed, and the attention and coaching the players get at a young age is different. However I would have loved to see Shaq go up against Wilt when both were in their prime.

You left out training equipment, methods, and facilities and nutrition. But I still think Wilt was far superior to Shaq.

Some of the very first great players I remember seeing were were Rick Barry, Pete Mauravich, Bob McAdoo, Elvin Hayes, but I was pretty young, it wasn't really until Bird and Magic came in that I really started watching closely.

Without Jordan, Kobe would be a completely different player. Most of Kobe's game is modeled after Jordan.

    Now you're talking.

I second UncleBuck's principle of never making comparisons across time.

That reminds me of question. Is the true identity of Graham Mernatsi commonly known?

My first NBA memory was a highly promoted NBA regular season game between the Lakers and the Bucks. Wilt and Kareem were matched against each other.

The only thing I remember is Wilt's gold head band.

Just bring up how Jordan ate Kobe up in 1997 - 98. Also bring up their field goal percentage and the fact that Jordan won 5 MVPs, 6 Finals MVPs, and a Defensive Player of the Year Award. Kobe has had 3 seasons where he has averaged over 30 ppg. Jordan had 8. Kobe's lead the league in scoring twice, Jordan did it 10 times!

Kobe is a better 3 point shooter than MJ was but MJ had the best post-up/fade away jumper of all-time. Kobe, IMO, is definitely the second best scorer that I've seen play in my lifetime.

Larry is not coming back, he didn't have a meeting with Orlando for not reason, yeah he is coming back to the NBA but not to the Pacers, the notion that he is a taking a year off and then come back is absurd.

That's what I hear, but I refuse to believe it. Wilt was the better player, he just didn't have the supporting cast Russell did to win the Championships Russell won.

I said it in another thread... I've seen them both play plenty and it's not particularly close. MJ easy. Even if you hadn't seen them, the accolades aren't even near the same level either.

Wilt and Shaq are (were) about equal from the free throw line. I'm old, I remember Wilt towards the end of his career standing at the top of the key to shoot free throws underhanded.

Rick Barry style, and Wilt was still a poor FT shooter.

How to tell your getting old?

If you're old enough to forget your middle school lessons on "your" and "you're."

In that case, pretty much everybody is "old."

Kobe will have a superior career to Lebron when all is said and done.

It certainly helps playing in L.A. as opposed to Cleveland.

That made it true, but it helped Jordan that he played in Chicago over a small market (like Portland, who could have drafted him). Or it helped Magic that like Kobe, he too played in L.A. And Larry Bird in Boston....and the list could go on and on......

Many legends have had the benefits of being in large markets. Kobe is making the most of the good fortune of being a Los Angeles Laker.

Lebron should go to New York City. Lebron plus New York market is going to equal success pretty quickly. Add Lebron to the Knicks right now and they are a 50+ win team, I don't care who is on the roster. Anywhere Lebron goes at this point, he wins.
