The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

I REALLY like what he brings to the table. I love the swagger. He would do wonders for us.
"I keep wondering the same thing. Last week they had the 4th worst record in the league, had an 11.9 percent chance of winning the lottery and were in line to land a franchise type player like Derrick Favors or DeMarcus Cousins. This week? They have a 1.7 percent chance of winning the lottery, have the 8th worst record and are in line to draft Cole Aldrich or Greg Monroe. Way to go Jim O'Brien. Rest Danny Granger the rest of the season (if it isn't too late) and give Josh McRoberts lots of minutes. That ought to do it." - Chad Ford on winning meaningless games

Way to go Jim, you may have just put our franchise back another 4+ years.

I liked the highlights for his athleticism and passion.

Then I saw him listed at 6'9" 205 pounds and quickly got turned off.

        Then I read this:

        http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Larry-Sanders-5148/

Measuring 6-10 in shoes, with a freakish 7-6 ½ wingspan and a frame that should put on weight
So he's as tall as Solomon Jones but he has Roy Hibbert's wingspan. Jeez. Now I'm right back to being interested. Projected to go 15th right now, so he might be in range.

He's averaging 2.7 blocks and 8.4 rebounds in 27 minutes a game. I need to catch some more games of him to watch his box-outs and timing and help defense, but he looks like he will be a very good defensive player off the bench and solid rebounder. He can hold his own on offense too, although it's not anything to write home about.

He's listed as 6-11 according to-

yeah his jumper is gross looking. I've also noticed he can barely jump...sometimes he gets stuffed by the rim. but based off potential wouldn't mind us getting him

I would love to have him. But right now hes in the 15-25 range and if he really wanted to get paid, he'd probably want to stick around a while longer. Heck, if he could have came out of HS, and we drafted him too this year, we would play both Solo and Macs' minutes, as well as alot of Fosters.

Cousins has a problem with staying on the damn floor. He fouls an awful lot.

Also, I bet we use a second rounder on Jeremy Lin.

I am interested in another bigman, preferrably one who is athletic.

Sanders and Patterson, Favors and Ed Davis make the list. How about the following.

                  Charles Gracia
                  http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/...s-Garcia-5800/

                  Dexter Pittman

23 points and 15 rebounds against UNC

Dexter Pittman looks like an NBA player, but he is VERY slow. He plays similar to Kendick Perkins or DeJuan Blair in college. But if he did make the pros, I just think he'd be another Sean May; a player too slow and not strong enough compared to NBA players instead of college players.

On a side note, RIGHT NOW WE'RE IN LINE FOR THE NUMBER 5 PICK!!!! Yay.. but it sickens me.

The way Stern loves us this means we will pick anywhere from 8-11, well after any potential game breaker will be there.

Larry Sanders has NBA athleticism. I am still in dismay about him putting on more weight for the next level. I believe he didn't start playing organized basketball until like 11th grade or something when he hit a big growth spurt. He may be able to harness more weight, but seeing him in person I would be surprised to see NBA upside with his frame. It seems as though his offensive arsenal has improved since last year. He has always worked off of cuts around the basket and is good with lobs and post movement in general. He did not have reliable back-to-the-basket moves when I saw him last. I will get over to the Seigel Center and give you guys an update here in the next couple of weeks on his progress.

What is Sanders' BBall IQ like? Will he look lost all the time like Solomon Jones, or will he be a wicked force like Jeff Foster in Hasheem Thabeets' body?

Is he reliable in the post at all? I'm sure he wouldn't draw a double team, but could he be good as Rasho and come in and hold himself in the low post 1 on 1?

Does he play interior defense? Is he a real banger? Will he get those hustle boards, and make Conseco rise to their feet?

This guy could be our next Foster or DD for 10-12 years. I want Larry Sanders on this team. If he could do these things on this team, I would be crazy happy.

Garcia's playing on Directv Ch. 683 right now.

He's a talented kid. Super raw. Big fish little pond. They played Denver tonight it may as well have been U of I or Marian U. It was a great game came down to the final second and a desperation three by some Denver dude on his first shot attempt of the night. Denver won. The refs were ridiculous. It was like a 5 grade basketball game.

He played both center and point guard if you can believe that. He'd man the paint on "D" alter some 5' 8" dude's shot. Get the rebound then he'd dribble between his legs around his back all the way up the court drop it off to their actual PG then takes his place back in the paint. They'd throw it high he'd catch it face the triple team and swish a 15 footer. Denver had some scrappy three point shooters and Garcia was in foul trouble.

Stock Watch: As ACC play starts, Alabi on the rise

NBA scouts are getting their last looks at prospects before conference season begins. This week a few familiar names are mingled with a handful of sleepers in our latest NBA Stock Watch.
                              STOCK: UP

                              Solomon Alabi, C, Florida State

Alabi hasn't put up huge numbers, but you don't need to when you're a 7-foot-1 center in a draft devoid of 5s. After getting off to a slow start in November, Alabi has picked it up in December. He had 21 and 10 against Ohio State, 22 and 9 against Auburn and a solid 9 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks versus Georgia Tech on Sunday.
While Alabi still looks very much like a work in progress, he has the physical attributes that scouts want in their big men. He can run the floor, block shots and crash the glass. Offensively he's still pretty raw, but so was Hasheem Thabeet, the No. 2 pick in last year's draft.
                              Gordon Hayward, SF, Butler

This year's draft is super rich in versatile forwards who can score in a variety of ways. Syracuse's Wesley Johnson is at the top of the class, but there's a lot of other talent here.
Hayward has been as good as any player in college basketball the past few weeks. Like Alabi, he was sluggish in November, but he's been red hot in December. Over the last three games Haywood is averaging 23 ppg, 10 rpg and shooting 11-for-22 from 3.
Hayward's versatility has drawn some comparisons to a tougher version of the Pacers' Mike Dunleavy. While he isn't an elite athlete, he continues to prove to scouts that he can use his high basketball IQ to make up for a lack of explosiveness. He's moved from a bubble first rounder to a mid-first-round pick this season. If he keeps it up, he might even crack the lottery.
                              Dexter Pittman, C, Texas
For the first three years of his career, Pittman was a curiosity -- a fat kid who had lost a lot of weight and turned himself into a nice basketball player. This year, Pittman is more than a human interest story. He's beginning to dominate the middle in a way few players in this year's draft can.
Pittman came up with his best game of the year on the biggest stage of the season so far on Saturday versus North Carolina. He scored 25 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and outmuscled and outhustled two Tar Heels with serious NBA potential -- Ed Davis and Deon Thompson.
Pittman still doesn't have the endurance to play more than a few minutes at a time on the floor. He's still -- three years and 80 fewer pounds later -- trying to get into great shape. But for the first time, Pittman is looking like a very legit NBA big man. We now have Pittman in our Top 30. If he can continue to put up big numbers, he could end up in the late lottery by draft time.
                              Andrew Nicholson, PF, St. Bonaventure

Nicholson has been flying under the radar his whole career. He got a late start playing basketball, a foot injury kept him from being a top college recruit and despite winning freshman of the year honors in the Atlantic 10 last season, he didn't really start generating draft buzz until recently.
Nicholson had his coming out party in a big game versus Syracuse on Saturday. The Bonnie's didn't win the game, but Nicholson was huge, scoring 18 points and going 9-for-10 from the field -- before he was ejected for hitting Syracuse guard Andy Rautins in the groin.
Nicholson has drawn comparisons to another former A-10 big man, David West. Nicholson is a bouncy big who loves to attack the basket. He needs to get stronger, but scouts love the tenacity he plays with -- even if he does go a little bit overboard at times.
Nicholson cracked our Top 60 for the first time this week and could end up being a first round pick -- especially if he continues to develop that face-up game.
                              Darington Hobson, F, New Mexico

Hobson was a highly thought of high school recruit who has finally found his way to New Mexico after a stint in junior college playing for Eastern Utah.
In a year when a number of transfers are making their mark, Hobson is no exception. He's off to a terrific start averaging 17 ppg, 8 rpg and an impressive 4.6 apg for the undefeated Lobos.
What makes Hobson so attractive is his versatility. Hobson can play three positions on the floor. He's at his most interesting when he's playing the point. Standing at 6-foot-7, Hobson has terrific size for a playmaker and is a little reminiscent of Penny Hardaway.
He's at his best when he's putting the ball on the floor and penetrating. He's averaging nearly seven free throws a game. Unfortunately he's shooting under 60 percent from the line when he gets there. Hobson's shot is still a work in progress, but the early returns from NBA scouts are that Hobson could be a big time prospect.
Hobson may be just getting started, however, he is already 22 years old and sources say he'd like to make the jump to the NBA this summer. If he can keep this up in conference play, he could be a first round pick -- maybe even lottery. He's got that much talent.
                              STOCK: DOWN

                              Devin Ebanks, F, West Virginia

NBA teams love Ebanks' talent. He is the prototypical sort of crazy long, jump-out-of-the-gym forward that scouts dream of. But Ebanks is off to a very shaky start at West Virginia. After leaving the team at the start of the season, Ebanks is finally back on the court. But he isn't playing the lead role we thought he'd play this year. If anything, forward Kevin Jones has replaced Ebanks as the "It" guy at West Virginia.
Part of Ebanks' problem is shooting. He's struggling to hit anything right now. He's also been really careless with the ball. He began his fourth game of the season coming off the bench and though he had a solid performance, scouts expected much, much more from him.
With teams now concerned about Ebanks' off-the-court issues and his so-so performance on the court, his stock has slipped into the late first round. Of course, if he explodes in conference play, he still could crack the Top 10. But right now there are better, less risky options in a draft laden with athletic small forwards.
                              Gani Lawal, F, Georgia Tech

Scouts have wanted to love Lawal for years. He's got all the physical tools they look for and has an excellent motor. Last year he got off to a red hot start before cooling off considerably when facing the tougher competition in the ACC. This year looks like it could be a mirror image of last.
Lawal has been terrific in early competition, especially against smaller schools. But in Georgia Tech's two big games versus Dayton and Florida State, he, once again, struggled mightily on the offensive end. Lawal was just 1-for-7 from the field against Florida State and had 9 points and a whopping 8 turnovers versus Dayton.
Lawal is already overshadowed this season by freshman forward Derrick Favors. Playing poorly in the big games isn't the way to work yourself back into the first round.

                              The Midrange Game

Maybe we should call this college basketball season "The Year of the Transfer Player." We've already highlighted the terrific performances by transfers like Wesley Johnson, Ekpe Udoh, Elliot Williams and Charles Garcia in the last few weeks. And today we looked at New Mexico's Darington Hobson. The good news just keeps coming and coming -- here are four more transfers making some noise this season.
UTEP's Derrick Caracter is off to a hot start after sitting out a year when he transferred from Louisville. He had 15 and 15 versus Ole Miss in his second game back and followed with a 21-point, 10-rebound game versus Alcorn State. No one doubts Caracter's talent. He has the skills of a lottery pick. But, he's had so many off-court issues, I think teams will shy away from him as a first-round prospect regardless of the numbers he puts up for UTEP this year.
NBA scouts are starting to make some noise about UAB's Elijah Millsap. Millsap is the younger brother of Utah Jazz power forward Paul Millsap. After playing two years at Louisiana Layfayette, Millsap transferred to UAB. He sat out last season due to eligibility rules and has come on strong in the early going at UAB.Millsap isn't a burly power forward like his brother. He's a swingman, who's trimmer, more athletic and can score. However, like his brother, he has uncanny rebounding ability.
USC power forward Alex Stepheson is also having a really big year after leaving North Carolina. The L.A. big man was terrific in an upset win over Tennessee this weekend. Stepheson had 19 points and 15 boards in the win. He also looked great earlier in the season against Georgia Tech, scoring 22 points and grabbing 7 boards. A terrible performance against Texas has been the only real blemish on his resume so far.
New Mexico State transfer Herb Pope is having a huge season for Seton Hall this year. He's averaging 14 ppg, 12 rpg and nearly 3 bpg. "He's the best rebounder in the country," one GM said. "He's the DeJuan Blair of this year's draft."However NBA teams are wary of Pope's past. His father, a crack addict, is in prison. His senior year in high school, Pope was shot four times at a party. He struggled academically at New Mexico State and began looking for a transfer soon after he arrived (at least in part because the coach that recruited him -- Reggie Theus -- was hired by the Sacramento Kings prior to Pope's arrival on campus).
He's a kid from a rough town in Pennsylvania who plays really rough in the paint. NBA teams love guys who will be a beast in the paint. If he can prove he's put a troubled past behind him -- he's being mentored by the New York Jets' Darrelle Revis, who also grew up in Pope's home town of Aliquippa -- he could end up being a big time prospect this year.

Re: Official 2010 NBA Draft Recruiting Center

I can't honestly see Gordon Hayward in the lottery. He's a role player at the very best; a Luke Walton or James Posey (with no D) at best. He'd be a nice 20-30 prospect, but nothing else.
