FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Basketball star Shaquille O'Neal offered to pay for the funeral of Shaniya Davis after seeing news of the 5-year-old's kidnapping and slaying, funeral director Corey R. Breece Sr., of Rogers and Breece Funeral Home, said.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Thursday that the Cleveland Cavaliers player was touched by the case.

Breece said Thursday that the bill had not been paid, but that O'Neal's representatives had expressed interest in helping with the costs.

More than 2,000 people attended her funeral Sunday. The girl's body was found Nov. 16 beside a rural road.

Her mother, Antionette Davis, who had reported the child missing six days earlier, is charged with human trafficking and child abuse involving prostitution. Mario McNeill is charged with murder, rape and kidnapping in the case.

"I was sitting at home watching it on the news and the story brought a tear to my eye," O'Neal told The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.

Plumlee reminds me of a young Dale Davis. Good rebounding and he contests shots well on defense and his offensive game is very raw just like DD's was coming out of college.

While I think Shaq is often full of himself and extremely self centered when it comes to basketball and his basketball related image, you certainly cannot question the love and compassion he has for the average person and his fellow man away from basketball.

How about Eric Gordon buying a bed at the Indy Ronald McDonald house for the entire year so families may stay in Indy without having to pay for a hotel??? I thought that was pretty cool!

Very thoughtful of Shaq. He will not gain much, if anything, by having done this, which makes this gesture all the more meaningful. Wonderful!

How about making a sticky of NBA Cares. I love to read of people reaching out to the poor, afflicted, and oppressed.

What about the countless acts of generosity before what you mentioned? No one is saying Shaq is a saint, but he often is noted for his generosity.

Yea i agree he has done many good things this included, but to me he just seems like hes kinda phony. stuff like he did in Orlando, LA, stealing steve nashs tv show, talking all that crap about kobe only to kiss his *** at the all star game. but im sure it is hard when every mistake you make is under a microscope.
