I won't disagree with the last part, but if you are the GOAT, you can't miss the playoffs and sulk through a couple of seasons. Winners just don't do that. And make no mistake about it: Besides Russell, Jordan is the greatest winner in the history of the game.

Edit: You saw when Jordan retired how mediocre that team was. I'd go so far as to wager that Kobe's Lakers had a better supporting cast last year than Jordan ever had.
Now Bill Russell was a winner. Aren't they going to start naming the Finals MVP award after him?
"I keep wondering the same thing. Last week they had the 4th worst record in the league, had an 11.9 percent chance of winning the lottery and were in line to land a franchise type player like Derrick Favors or DeMarcus Cousins. This week? They have a 1.7 percent chance of winning the lottery, have the 8th worst record and are in line to draft Cole Aldrich or Greg Monroe. Way to go Jim O'Brien. Rest Danny Granger the rest of the season (if it isn't too late) and give Josh McRoberts lots of minutes. That ought to do it." - Chad Ford on winning meaningless games

Way to go Jim, you may have just put our franchise back another 4+ years.

Heck, they should name both MVP trophies after him.

Technically, Kareem is the gold standard for MVPs. Let's not go overboard.

Naming it after Jordan or Wilt would be more apt.

I don't mean it on who won it the most (I'm assuming that's not Russell).

I'd do it to honor the ultimate team-first guy and the ultimate winner. Wilt was much more stat-whore than a winner.

Naming it after Kareem or MJ would be fine, but I'd prefer Russell. Then again I know others don't view the MVP as anything but "best player period", so I can understand disagreeing with me.

Can we rename the Larry O'Brien trophy too? Wasn't he an especially crappy commish?

Honoring Russell more than once would be silly and extreme. He isn't Jackie Robinson. He's a great player that was drafted into a team already stocked with hall of famers that needed a center to complete the roster. He wasn't Jesus Christ. He didnt sprinkle his magic winner dust over the celtics and turn them from nothing to the greatest dynasty ever.

Sometimes I wonder if some people ever actually watched Russell play in any form, or they just see the pile of rings and just assume he was god's gift to basketball.

Russell won 11 titles in 13 years. That's remarkable, and I doubt it would ever be matched.

Replace him with Wilt and the Celtics probably go 13 for 13.

Read Bill Simmons' book. Actually, just read the Wilt vs. Russell chapter. It is fascinating, and it really sheds some light on this argument.

I'm watching this Bulls/Cavaliers game on ESPN right now. Man, Chicago has a really crappy offense. I know Gordon is kind of a chucker, but they miss him badly. They need someone who can make an outside shot consistently.

Chicago getting ready to drop one to the Nets at Chicago. Kiki Vandeweigh is not dancing on the sidelines, yet.

    Road win for the Nets.

I'll make a (slightly) bolder prediction than duke made a few weeks ago: Vinny Del Negro is the next NBA coach fired.

Really happy to see this team coming along.

No Ben Gordon, Will Bynum, Rip Hamilton, or Tayshaun Prince, and we still managed to beat Denver tonight.

An obligatory shout out to Ben Wallace for another monster 16-rebound performance, while holding Nene to 8 points.

On a side note: Carmelo Anthony makes $5 million more this year than the 5 guys we started tonight, combined.

I'm not sure why this matters to you. If we're not in the lottery, someone else will be.

I hate the lottery, The 2 months of fun and anticipation between the lottery and the draft are not worth the 82 games of sheer misery. I remember those days, and have no desire to go back to them.

I just thank god we have Kuester instead of Curry. Coaching has made all the difference so far between 10-12 and 2-20.

Because I hate the Pistons more than I hate any of the other 29 teams. And you are too easy to mess with

The Oklahoma City is now 12-9. The Thunder's top-four scorers and their respective age:

    Kevin Durant, 21
    Russell Westbrook, 21
    Jeff Green, 23
    James Harden, 20

In my opinion, OKC has not only passed up Portland for best young talent in the league, they've lapped them.

Alright! I picked OKC to make the playoffs this year. Through 21 games, they are making me look smart. Sorry OKC fans, I just jinxed you.

There are currently three players averaging at least 20/5/5 (points, rebounds, assists): LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and... Tyreke Evans.

For the record, Joe Johnson is .1 of an assist away from joining the club, and Brandon Roy is .5 a rebound off.

Evans is very, very good, but he's also not a point guard. A decision will need to be made on KMart.

If by mediocre you mean winning 55 games and taking the eventual EC champ Knicks to 7 games in the 1994 ECF semis, then yes I agree they were very mediocre.

There is no doubt that Kobe has an insanely talented cast around him, but he doesn't have one of the greatest all around players of all time playing with him like Jordan did.

He has more overall talent, though. That team is very capable of playing well with Kobe off the floor. You can't really say that about Jordan's teams.
