Hochman: Twitter's rating R for raw
    By Benjamin Hochman

Last Thursday, the 8,475 Twitter followers of Dahntay Jones — the former Nuggets guard who just signed with the Indiana Pacers — were greeted to a hip-hop lyric and a personal message:

At the end of the racially slurred lyric by Rick Ross, the message said: "the nuggets did me dirty."

A half-hour later, Jones' Twitter (@dahntay) sent this update: "FYI . . . my cousin put up that Rick ross quote. But it does fit. Lol."

So it seems, Jones (his cousin too) was indeed miffed the Nuggets didn't offer him a four-year contract like his new team did. Through Twitter, we were treated to the raw revelation of an athlete's true feelings, far from the cliche-laden locker room interviews. We also were treated to some raw rap lyrics and lewd language. And other Nuggets such as J.R. Smith and Sonny Weems occasionally tweet the vile "N" word.

    (article continues on...)

This will no doubt give some Pacer fans a reason to distrust this guy.

Just goes to show that people do indeed talk similar to the report involving Brandon Jennings a while back, contrary to what people want to believe.

    Personally, I don't care.

    He's a human. I don't care if he's a professional, no one is perfect.

I personally wouldn't post something like that if I were a "high profile professional" representing a pro sports team. But, I haven't walked in his shoes, so I won't hold this against him.

May I make a cheerful request that all threads based on Twitter be identified as such in the thread title? A-train has done this here, and I thank him.

I can now ignore this thread, and whoever wishes can discuss it.

LOL. If I got on here and made derogatory posts about all the people on these forums, and woke up the next morning on the brink of being banned, I'd say my cousin posted it too.

If he's telling the truth, it's just as much of a mistake as to let his cousin access his twitter account (something that's assigned to him and in the public eye) as it is him posting lyrics.

Dude, if 90% of the conversations were open for public consumption, this would likely be run of the mill conversation between alot of the guys in the league.

I agree. Being around some American basketball players in Europe or just by seeing a game in the 1st rows and listening to the players talking to each other proves that the use of the n/f words is more widespread that the reactions to the Jennings affair would have lead one to believe. Considering the context and the intent they use those words, I personally don't care a bit and I don't see any wrongdoing. I'm pretty sure Dahntay Jones (or Brandon Jennings) won't use the same vernacular when interacting with young fans in a basketball camp, if that is what worries people.

Dumb decision to put it on twitter. That said, if he performs no one will care.

Yeah right. I remember when people would nitpick at Tinsley so bad for everything. Granted, he deserved everything he got, but if he was averaging 20 points and 10 assists the same people ripping him would be making excuses for his behavior. If this guy comes out and is a complete dud his twitter bs will be the butt of a few jokes, thats just how it works.

Yeah right to yourself. I don't give a crap about some meaningless junk found on Twitter. What he does on the court has no bearing on my blasé attitude towards this Tweeting incident.

Its not like he SAID IT it was written on Twitter and is a part of a Rap Artists lyrics. If you have ever sung along to an unedited version of any rap song in the last 15 years you yourself have dropped the N bomb. Big friggin deal.

My only concern is the complaining, it reminds me a bit of AJ or Harrington. Guys that complain after a somewhat reasonable business decision aren't guys I trust to have a positive attitude. Add to this his clear willingness to abuse the rules and use physical intimidation in place of actual play and I think you guys are in for a surprise problem.

The team does need a wing defender, but from how I read Jones he really doesn't fit what the rest of the team is about. (ahem - MATURITY)

Who's going to be happy 6 months from now when he's twittering that the Pacers are screwing him over on PT? I don't care if he posts Journey lyrics before it, it won't go over well.

Twitter is a great communication/networking tool...

It only sucks if people are to dumb to use it right (like dropping the n-word, and doing other bad PR moves)... (note it sucks for that person, the rest the world can just point and laugh at how stupid they are...)

But then again I'm biased and use social media for both professional and personal uses...
