Default The Portland Trail Blazers have offered Utah Jazz free agent Paul Millsap a four-year contract worth between $32 million and $36 million

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4320029

The Portland Trail Blazers have offered Utah Jazz free agent Paul Millsap a four-year contract worth between $32 million and $36 million, according to league sources.

The offer includes a hefty signing bonus that will make it difficult for Utah to match. The Jazz will be presented with the offer Saturday and have seven days to match because Millsap is a restricted free agent.

I don't understand what the Traill Blazers are doing, they have Aldridge at PF are they expecting him to come of the bench?

Not exactly a vote of confidence for their current big men.

Too bad we can't make a play for Aldridge.

Because Portland's paying 9mil/year for his backup.

I think the Blazers are just trying to push Utah's hand. The Jazz have said they'll make anything for Millsap.

I'm guessing the Blazers did the offer in hopes of forcing the Jazz hand within the week to trade Boozer, hoping to make that Hinrich deal with the Bulls urgent for the Jazz, b/c if the Jazz sign Millsap while having Boozer under contract, I think they'll get less value b/c teams will know that they HAVE to move Boozer.

    Utah will match this.

In a related note, I'm surprised by the exasperation Brandon Roy publicly expressed about the negotiations to his extension. I guess Paul Allen was talking serious when he demanded the organization to "break even".

I know this, I meant that he could be an starter in any team, the same with Aldridge, why have two starter PF's? I don't understand.

Lamar Odom could be a starter on any NBA team too, yet he's going back to the Lakers...

They once had Brian Grant and Rasheed Wallace at the same time. Nothing they haven't done before.

Portland is looking to upgrade the 1 and the 3. They have capspace available to do that. However, they struck out on Turk and one gets the feeling they arent too excited about the possibility of signing a free agent pg given how much it seemingly will cost versus their perceived improvement by doing so.

So, if they indeed actually sign Millsap, they are saying that may be the best use of their capspace. They acquire an additional asset that can, in turn, be parlayed(directly or indirectly) into acquiring that upgrade at the 1 or the 3 somewhere down the road.

So whether it forces Utahs hand on the trades being discussed or Portland ends up with Millsap, or it puts Utah in even a bigger bind by being forced to match, Portland still comes out benefiting.

Aldridge can play the 4 and Oden at the 5. Bring out Oden, slide LeMarcus over to the 5 and plug Millsap in at the 4. And if Oden gets hurt, Aldridge is your starting center.

Or, Aldridge or Millsap becomes trade-bait to Chicago for Kirk? I'd prefer to keep Aldridge.

How quickly can one trade Millsap if Utah doesn't match?

I am with Kstat and cinotimz. It is like drafting the best player available. Instead of going after cheap players that are barely better than Webster, Batum, Blake, and company, why not get a player that can come in and produce.

BTW I don't see Alridge starting at center too much when Oden goes down. Pryzbilla is a viable starting center. But their depth in the front court gives them freedom in trading. My guess is that they are not done dealing.

Should have gone after Marvin Williams.

But maybe Portland knows that both teams will match these contracts. So why not offer a contract to a team that will hurt a fellow Western team's cap situation.

IDK, I agree I would rather go after Childres if I were them. Marvin Williams may have cost them the same.

you guys need to remember that portland is working for an extension for Roy and Aldridge, according to some reports Roy is looking to get close to 83 mil and 5 years. They are not going to have enough cap space to sign other players.

Isn't Portland supposed to be involved with a Utah Boozer trade? That may have something to do with this. It's good strategy if that is their aim and if it works out.

Marvin Williams would be nice, but the Hawks would match anything they could offer.

I don't think they should go after Childress. Would he be an improvement over what they currently have? Childress is nothing more than a 6th man (and not even a good one, IMO); not someone you spend salary room in.

I don't think we are saying that they should now go after said players. I meant to say they should have gone after these players instead of Milsap.
