Default Hansbrough's Intensity is Making an Impression

    http://www.indysportsnation.com/spor...0,640708.story
    By: Larry Hawley

INDIANAPOLIS - A reputation has followed him from Poplar Bluff, MO to Chapel Hill, NC and Indianapolis, IN.

From Tar Heel Baby Blue to Pacers Navy Blue, Tyler Hansbrough's style has been black and blue.

"An intensity level that is off the charts," is how Pacers head coach Jim O'Brien describes former college player of hte year's style.

Cultivated over four years in the Tar Heel uniform, his physical, intense, and over-the-top energy earned a his share of bloody noses and bruises.

"I am what I am and I do what I do," said Hansbrough of his game.

It worked well for the player known by some as "Psycho-T" ,as Hansbrough averaged 20 points and eight rebounds a game in his senior season while leading North Carolina to the National Championship. It was a primary reason the Pacers grabbed the forward with the No. 13 pick in June's NBA Draft.

"Thats the type of effort that we need right now," said guard Brandon Rush, whose joined Hansbrough along with other first and second year players for the team's first summer league workout Thursday. Though more of a practice for installing offense and defense, Hansbrough showed a few glimpses of his trademark style during the session open to media at the Conseco Fieldhouse practice court. A rebound slam was the highlight, along with a few tough rebounds gave a glimpse of possible exploits to come.

"We're getting more guys that play with the type of attitude," said O'Brien of Hansbrough's intense play. "Thats the way we're trying to build our franchise."

Hansbrough figures to do so in that way at the least, but how he'll fit into the NBA game and the Pacers rotation is still to be seen. His play on Thursday, however, caught at least one player off guard.

"Tyler really surprised me today because I didn't know he was that athletic," said Rush of Hansbrough. "He gets up like Josh, because Josh is real athletic too."

As in Josh McRoberts, who for two years battled Hansbrough at rival Duke before he entered the NBA Draft.

"I think we'll compliment each other well," said the Carmel Native of his new teammate. "I'm glad we're on the same side now."

Hans is going to crush people in summer ball. Seriously, they'll never see that effort coming. I'm not being sarcastic.

It's going to be "whoa dude, we made the team already, this is just a relaxing warm up". Pacers may win these games by 25. This is going to be unleashing Pete Rose on spring training baseball.

Does anyone else think that for Tyler's whole career his best stats will come in the middle of seasons, like a peak? Those dull Jan and Feb games that other players naturally relax a little.

Hansbrough will be a nice player to have for games in which Indiana can build a lead earlier in the game. He's not going to relax and take plays off. It should be a lot easier to win those types of games with him on the floor.

His effort alone is going to be worth some W's...even if you have low expectations of him. He will strap it on every single play and wear people out. Throw him out there in the second quarter and people will be hacking him...and you know he will convert. Against backups, I think he will beat them to death.

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

I wonder what kind of leadership abilities TH has because this team could surely use one. I think the last real leader was Antonio Davis.

At UNC he was at best a leader by example. By most reports when things weren't exactly on track for the Tar Heels (which by the way wasn't often) the more vocal guys tended to be I believe Danny Green and maybe Ty Lawson. This is based upon only what I read throughout the years on UNC message boards where the worship of Hansbrough was a tad ridiculous. Also it never appeared that Hansbrough had an especially warm relationship with teammates. He wasn't necessarily in conflict with any of them either and I'm not saying he didn't get along with them. But from the little details I could piece together his closest friends on campus tended to be guys not on the team. But perhaps any UNC fans visiting this board could correct me on this if I am wrong.

I'm sorry, but a lot of this just seems to be assumptions. I watched a lot of UNC games, I live in Charlotte and am a Tar Heel fan. I will say Hansbrough is more of a leader on the court than maybe a vocal leader - but make no mistake, he definitely lead by example. He has a huge passion for the game, that alone is something other players can look up to, that and he never takes a play off. As for his relationship with the team - I'm not sure where your getting that from or why you are assuming that. I know he has talked about how Bobby Frazier is one of his best friends. There have also been videos of him goofing around with his teammates in the locker room.
