Default Hanbrough press conference at 12:30 - open to public today

Just got this e-mail from the Pacers.

Last night the Indiana Pacers selected Tyler Hansbrough with the 13th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft and we want your help to make him feel at home in Conseco Fieldhouse.

As a friend of the franchise, you're invited to join us at 12:30 p.m. today, June 26, as we host a special public press conference to welcome Tyler Hansbrough to Indiana. Hansbrough comes off a senior season where he led the University of North Carolina to an NCAA championship, while averaging 20.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

"He's one of the hardest workers I've seen in a long time," said team President Larry Bird. "He's dedicated to the game and he'll fit in with what we're trying to do here. He's all about winning."

We hope to see you this afternoon as we welcome a new member to the Pacers family. Please join us in the Clarian Health Entry Pavilion of Conseco Fieldhouse for today's 12:30 p.m. press conference

Good, I'll be able to watch it.

If we're holding a press conference for him now, I doubt he's going anywhere.

    ESPN keeps talking about him.

We should hold a press conference for A.J. Price too.

And this is why I like the pick. I want guys who want to play the game. I want guys who love basketball.
You know how hippos are made out to be sweet and silly, like big cows, but are actually extremely dangerous and can kill you with stunning brutality? The Pacers are the NBA's hippos....Matt Moore CBS Sports....

Absolutely, he leads all of the rookies in steals already.

    I'm here all week.

Had to dust that one off from the Marcus Williams draft, I think it was.

He may get those shots off all day against college guys like Blake Griffin but can he get off those shots against real quality NBA players (like, for example, Blake Griffin)?

I'm really excited about him fitting into our system and playing with the players on our team who are pretty similar to him.

I just hope his defense is good too.

I actually attended the press conference (off work today) and just got home a little while ago.

The press conference was held right in the lobby of Conseco. I'd say attendance was at about 200 people or so. Most of them appeared to be members of the media or Pacers staffers. There were also signs above the tunnel that the players drive down welcoming Hansbrough to the Pacers as well as the sign in the lobby above the ticket counter that also welcomed Tyler to the Pacers. As far as the topics:

-- Hansbrough is happy to be in Indy
-- His game will speak for itself and he'll work hard everyday
-- Pacers like the pick and were glad he was available at 13
-- Mentioned he had played in Indy before against Greg Oden in High School and had been here several times for AAU events

Didn't hear anything too earth shattering as it was your typical run of the mill welcome to the team interview.

Afterwards, the local stations (6, 8, 13, 59) all had a chance to interview Hansbrough and then he sat down and spoke with the newspaper guys. Then, for the probably half dozen fans that stuck around, we were able to meet Tyler, get an autograph, picture, etc. Bird also signed a few autographs and stood and chatted with Morway for 15-20 minutes.

I actually stood next to Hansbrough and he didn't appear to be 6'9/10ish in shoes as I would have guessed him for 6'8ish or so. He was pretty reserved and was probably overwhelmed and tired. He was a pretty nice guy and took a few pictures, signed autographs, etc.

I heard Benner saying to Bird that they had a ton of events scheduled for Hansbrough with pacers.com chat, photoshoot, etc and he was on a pretty tight schedule.

I'll try and post a few pictures later as I only had my phone with me and need to upload them.

I like the kid. I'm not sure he will ever be an All Star, but I do feel he will be a solid rotation guy who will get us rebounds and help in the scoring department. I think everyone doubting him we be great motivation for him to prove everyone wrong. Can't wait to see him with Rush and Hibbert at the Orlando Summer League in the next few weeks.

I went too, but didn't stay for an autograph. I think the kid will play some hard-nosed ball while keeping his nose clean (no midnight shooting sprees). The press fed him some softballs, but he seems to be able to handle himself well. He should be another appreciative pupil for Foster (except in the shooting department, that is).
