Default INDYSTAR: Diener is coming back

    http://www.indystar.com/article/2009...turn+to+Pacers

Backup point guard Travis Diener said today that he will return to the Indiana Pacers next season.
Diener could have opted out of his contract and become a free agent. Instead, he will make $1.7 million next season.

"I like playing for coach (Jim) O'Brien," Diener said. "He has a system that fits my style, and I'm looking forward to returning to a team that is going in the right direction."
Diener averaged 3.7 points in 55 games last season.

Hopefully he doesn't have to ride the bench next season.

Of course Diener opted back in. Where else during these tough economic times can a third string point guard make $1.7 million. The second coming of Dan Dickau is back...

The article doesn't say he's picked up his option. He's just quoted as saying he's coming back, that doesn't mean he's already signed it.

Now to play devil's advocate, it could mean Larry has talked to him and he's agreed to be traded to a team where he will get more time, so he's picking up the option early. The part about playing for O'B is to throw other teams off.

Really though I think the Pacers want him back in case Jack leaves we would have a good backup that knows the system.

Though I like Dieners flair and personality on the sidelines... I hope, for our franchises sake, that he won't play a lot.

Why? Well if he does play more it could have something to do with injuries to other guards infront of him in our rotation, us not having many PG's (which could happen if we won't draft a PG and we deal away Ford or won't re-sign Jack, all EXTREMELY unlikely, but possible nonetheless) or something along the lines of the team not bringing in a lot of talent or players in the backcourt with Quis probably gone.

Good to hear. I like Diener. Regardless of his shortcomings, he brings a nice spark off the bench when he does get playing time

I happen to agree. I don't see much change in his minutes next season. If Ford is traded and we draft a PG, Travis will probably be the 3rd string PG again.

Travis will always be a third-string PG. The only question is whether or not we actually have two guys ahead of him or if we have to let our third-string PG onto the court?
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

Yup, I think it's a perfect arrangement. I don't know about the house thing, but I doubt he'll be traded. No, hold on to a popular, pass-oriented, good-shooting (if athletically challenged) guy one more year for the low, low price of $1.74 mil and let him back up Jack (or Ford) while the new PG gets his feet wet. (We should expect more extreme ups and downs from a new young PG than from a new young at any other position.) From a fiscal standpoint, and even a strategic standpoint, it's darn near perfect. Welcome back, Diener Dog!

Afterthought: I think it'd be awesome if, now that we have Diener to "steady the ship," we could also draft both Rodrigue Beaubois and Paul Harris. Then if Trav gets athletically abused at some point (inevitable), we put both of those two defensive honchos in and have them whisper to the other backcourt, "Yo! Dribble and pass all ya want, if ya can ... but y'all ain't scorin'. At all."

Glad to have Travis back. He is what he is IMHO. He is a good guard that can give spot minutes and runs the team effectively when needed. As out third stringer he is perfect in that role and can be reliable as the back up when/if the injury big hits. Add the fact that he is a great locker room guy and good for the community and he is good for the team.

Quite to the contrary, if Travis rides the bench all season, then that probably means good things for the team and probably quality play at the pg position.

Hopefully the only time he sees any playing time is in mop up minutes in our blowout wins.

There's no way Diener could command a 1st round pick.

I was beginning to wonder what J'OB would do if he couldn't put Diener and Ford on the floor at the same time.

I know your somewhat joking but this does solidify the possibility of a Ford or Jack trade as well. If one of the 2 are traded then we draft a pg unless the trade invovles us getting a pg.

If we don't trade any of our pgs then I am guessing we are going to draft a pf.

Does anyone know if Diener had a deadline to take his option?

Just curious if Larry was urging him to make a decision so he could figure out who he was going to draft.
