Default Any beer conoisseurs out there?

Last night I stumbled upon some Lost Abbey stuff at my local Crown Liquors. Absolutely couldn't believe it. Picked up a 375 ml bottle of Angel's Share for a bit of coin, but I'm expecting it to be worth it. Also got a bomber of Amazing Grace ale. Never thought I would find this stuff here and my buddy and I were assuming we would have to road trip to Cali to get this.I went in there to get him a bottle of port to celebrate him taking the MCATs and walked out with this. Best trip to the liquor store ever.

Anybody else a big fan of microbreweries?

Huge fan of the microbrews, but I do try to sample local stuff first and then branch out. I go to the Broad Ripple Brewfest every summer and went to the winterfest they had at the State Fairgrounds this winter too. One of the best beers I've ever had I had at the Winterfest this year. It's a small brewery in Ft. Wayne called Warbird. They make great stuff all around but their Mustang Ale is top flight.

My favorite Indiana brewery is Three Floyd's in Munster. Awesome lineup. Then you've got Stone, Bell's, but the best beer I've had to date was Founder's Breakfast Stout. Founder's also has a great lineup.

Their Russian Imperial Stout was rated best beer in the world about a year ago.

I see it's down to #5, now that I look again:

    http://beeradvocate.com/top_beers.php

I've only had a handful of the beers on this list. That leaves about 95 to find and enjoy.

Upland is pretty good. My favorite part of going to that brewery though are the burgers in the restaurant.

Yes, Dark Lord. Sold one day a year usually in the spring. I wanted to go this year and couldn't make it.

The Old Rasputin is the only Russian Stout on that list I've had. There's one that's sold at many bars in Croatia (gov't sponsored vacation) called Tomislav that I wish they'd get exported.

The Duvel, an ale from Belgium, is pretty commonly available in the states now. It's real nice...worth a try.

Also, when I do beer belches, I can sound like I'm talking Klingon. Pretty fun.

I haven't been much of a beer man since my return from living in Germany. My favorite was this brew we used to get from southern Germany that had a smooth and a bit of a nutty taste called Brauhmenan Draft. It was a very potent brew, but tasted great and never was bitter regardless of its temperature. We used to drive the two hour trip and grab a keg or two every time a guy was going back to the states. Also some super fresh Guinness on tap was good, but it just doesn't taste the same here.

What does everybody like in the summer?

I'm partial to Goose Island 312 and Bell's Oberon when the weather turns hot.

    Lienie's Honey Weiss.

Or a Honey Bear - 1/2 Honey Weiss and 1/2 Berry Weiss.

Living in Chicago, I find Goose Island to be very overrated.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

I consider it "solid". Don't know if that's overrated or not. I thought their "Mild Winter" was pretty good.

Although not a "connoisseur" beer, I'm fond of Leinies Red.

Their 'fest is very good for an American one, although I prefer Hacker-Pschorr or Spaten.

I'm seeing a lot of "Fat Tire" in stores right now. Looks like they are trying the Indianapolis market. Good stuff. I could drink that all day.

Overrated in that everybody around here swears by it, because it is local. But there are better (just not as well known) locals too. (Just like Giordanno's pizza - better known but not as good).

That is my stand-by. If I can't figure out what I'm in the mood for, I'll take one of those!

I liked that a lot better on tap in a brewpubs in Colorado than in a bottle out here. Not sure if my memory was that it is better than it is, or if it is just better when fresher. They sell it in a 23 ounce bottle at the train station but that is not my choice for a Friday afternoon commute.

312 is great. I know a lot of people who like Oberon, but I was really unimpressed when I had it. I thought it was worse than Leinekugel's Sunset Wheat. I also like Gumballhead which is Three Floyd's wheat beer.

Many of the companies are coming out with seasonal brews now....I'll usually sample whatever summer ales come out, maybe stock up on them if there's a deal going on at the store.

If anyone comes to Santa Monica/Venice, I'll take you to LIbrary Alehouse. Great beer, great food. Can't miss.
