Default Surgery Thursday, wish me luck

Well, after a fair amount of deliberation I finally decided to get my foot fixed.

    I go in tomorrow morning.

Basically, I've got two problems. My heel bone is square at the top instead of round, which irritates the achillies tendon as it moves over it. So, basically my heel is painful all the time now. The other problem is with my big toe joint on the same foot. I figured that one for "turf toe", but it's really a bone problem as well - one of them is too long and doesn't mate up squarely at the joint.

I was somewhat hopeful a lot of rest would fix them. I haven't played basketball in almost 6 months. But they - especially the heel - has been getting steadily more painful, especially in the last month. I finally decided I needed to get them fixed.

    Surgery is at 9 am.

I've never really had surgery, so I'm a little nervous. It should take about an hour.

Then 3 weeks in a hard boot.

Another 3 or so in a soft boot.

I should be back to full activities in 8 weeks or so, with another 4 to get my strength back.

They basically reshape the back of my heel bone and clean out the scar tissue and bursal sac. The achillies tendon itself was in pretty good shape on the ultrasound. Hopefully they won't have to mess with it much.

Wish me luck, or rather wish the surgeon luck. I just have to lie there.

I've been under three times. Each time, if felt like the anesthesiologist was talking to me, and then he paused about three seconds and then someone else started talking. That three second pause in my perception was the whole surgery. The process of going under just goes very smoothly.

    Best wishes to you.

    EDIT: Make that 4 times.

I've had to have an emergency apendectomy. Going under isn't fun by any means but it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Good luck.

I've been knocked out several times to get things done. Not a big deal - they give you the IV and I always am out after the first dope - they give you another but I never know it. The other good thing is that, at least for me the anesthetic seems to have some sort of numbing effect for another day or so. I know I hurt like hell, even with Vicodin, but somehow it doesn't seem to matter that much. Days 3-5 are the worst and then the stitches/staples start to heal up and you feel like getting around.

You'll be surprised (I think) at how quickly you'll get around in the boot. Bit of a hassle but definitely maneuverable. Biggest pain is the driving restriction (my last surgery was my right ankle). I ignored it for driving around Frankfort but not for anything more than that.

Let us know how things went.

Good luck! Remember to appreciate the perks (like the drugs and the pretty girls at the rehab center) while you can!

I guess you are just coming out of surgery about now. Hope verything went well. I've never had surgery - but did have to rehab my foot after breaking abone and not walking on my foot for about 8 weeks. Physical therapy can be tough and I times you think it will never get better. Just take it day by day and time as much as anything will get you back to normal.

    great news!

Before the anesthetic wears off completely, maybe we can make a fantasy basketball keeper league trade. Your guy Yao is always hurt, and my guy Brad Miller seems to be on the rise...

Unfortunately, I was pretty coherent when I woke up, so that Yao/Miller trade is off....

I'm at home now. Leg propped up with this funky compression/ice boot thing plugged in.

I had a little bleeding from the heel area post-op, so they had to change the dressing before I left. Other than that, things seem to have went well.

I didn't even get crutches, but have a big honking boot to wear when I walk. Or hobble as the case may be. But don't think I'll be moving around much.

If I was thinking, I would have had this done right before "March Madness".

My toes (and my foot in general) is still pretty numb from the "local" during the surgery. That, and the vicoden I have in me.

Anesthesia was pretty much as several of you described. You start to feel the affects of the medicine in the IV, and next thing you know you are done, and a little sleepy.

Thanks for all of the well wishes.

Rehab should be interesting. I'm planning on using it as an excuse to get in the "best shape of my life". I might start a new thread for that just to help keep me honest.

I heard on the radio that the busiest time of the year for men to get a vasectomy is during march Madness. Some clinics even run special promotions: http://www.amplifyyourvoice.org/u/Le...Vasectomy-Time

I wish you the best of luck on your recovery. I just had rotator cuff surgery and know how long rehab can be.

Actually now is the best time - you have two months of NBA playoffs to look forward to.

4 games each for the next two Saturdays and Sundays

I had surgery last year and used the same excuse. It worked, so keep at it!

Enjoy - I got 1 free refill after my last surgery. I didn't need it any more but I sure filled it. Nice to have that bottle in the cabinet for when a steer mashes you against a wall or your horse throws you.
