    Default Reggie Starting

I don't know if this has been discussed much before, but there is a contoversy on another board about whether Reggie should start next season. Since I respect the opinions on this board much more, I would like to know what you all think. Myself, I feel he should but maybe limit his minutes if he's not hitting that night.

Well it's been discussed of course , personally I think Reggie should come off the Bench. I know Rick said If Reggie came back for his 18th year that he seen him as a starter , but then again I question how much power and say does Rick have in making that decision ? I think it was more of a complementary statement by Rick to say that Reggie would be a starter next season if he decides not to retire.

So guess some questions need to be answered first before I guess Pacers management makes that decision , since there has been no talk about it which is pretty usual for the Pacers I guess you could say.

If Reggie is a Starter then I don't see us making a big trade for a SG , most the Guys are not going to wanna play 2nd fiddle to a 39 year Reggie Miller , atleast anyone that has the skills to be a Starter in the NBA.

Really It's all up in the air right now I guess til we see some actual players contracted and announcements are made , of course I could be wrong but I feel this is gonna be a very long offseason for Pacers fans. Too Much Hype in the air right now to take anything serious , well atleast for me anyways

Reggie should not have started last year, let alone next year.

I'm not against him coming off the bench, but I want him to start next year. (Yes, I'm one of those.)

    There's a controversy?

I mean, there's people saying that Reggie should be the starting SG next season?

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

Personally, I would love to see Reggie come off the bench just for the simple fact that his roll could be just a "gunner". I'd love to see him just come off the bench against the oppositions second string and just shoot and not worry about passing up open shots to get others involved.

WHAT? He's the head coach! He decides who starts, who plays, and how much. Where ever did you come up with the idea that he doesn't have the power and say?

Even when Bird was the coach Carlisle drew up plays. Plus Bird isn't the type to interfere in the head coach's decisions on who plays etc.

Another thing, in one article Carlisle said Reggie would probably start, he didn't say it was a sure thing. I think whether Reggie starts or not depends on who's on the team. If it remains as is Reggie will in all likelihood start. If we get someone else that can spread the defense and hit the outside shot I look for Reggie to come off the bench.

Regardless of who starts I think Reggie will be down from the 28 minutes he averaged this past season. How much he's down will depend on how good the other guys on the team are.

I think Reg needs to start unless of course we get a T-mac or Ray Allen only they should take his spot.

To be perfectly honest about it, there's a semantic out for this whole thing.

Reggie is the starter right now, just like Detroit is the NBA champs until someone else wins.

After training camp ... ahh, then we'll see.

If Reggie was the starter but played bench minutes, how many people would have problems with that?

I agree that if Reggie was the starter he should be limited to bench minutes but some are of the opinion that you start the best 5. I have my doubts that Miller is one of the best 5 any longer.

Reggie needs to releize he's a not what he use to be, and step back and let the younger players develope.

I think his role on the team should be a team leader, and a backup that will come in and knock some shots down.

Well, I think thatReggie should retire, period. On most nights last season, esp. during the playoffs, Reggie hurt more than he helped. And it really pains me to say that, because I have the utmost respect for the guy.

However, if he's staying, he needs to come off the bench and be a shooting specialist. He might even increase his scoring average with this method.

Reggie starting next year is a very bad idea IMO, unless he gets bench minutes and Freddie (or whomever our other sg is) is somehow able to stomach playing 30 min/game off the bench.

I think reggie would actually be better on the second unit where he would be a main option for scoring instead of passing up shots like he does now.

Freddie and Bender (if he isn't hurt) are going to be the main bench guys next year. And I would definitely like to see him get a good 25-30 min a game. I would not mind him starting either

I think Reggie should take a role like Steve Kerr's on the '03 Spurs team. IIRC, Kerr got spot minutes behind Jackson and Ginobili, but could still come in and hit big shots, especially in the clutch.

Assuming a new SG is acquired, that guard should start and Freddie and Reggie would come off the bench, with Freddie getting the bulk of the minutes. Reggie would also be there in case either of the guards is hurt.

I think this situation would be best for the new guard, Freddie and the team even though Reggie's role is diminished. Freddie shouldn't have to change positions so that an old, declining SG can get minutes just for sentimental value.

I don't know what some of you guys expect from your 4th or 5th leading scorer. We won 61 games with Reggie starting and Reggie's output in the playoffs was comparable to his regular season. Al's output was the one that dropped off the most in the playoffs, along with the rest of the bench. I may be the only one, but I didn't think Reg did any worse of a job guarding Rip than our other guys did. Rip was just on fire the whole series.

There's only a few teams that have all 5 starters averaging double figures. We are not likely to have 3 AllStars in the starting lineup any time soon and neither is any of the other teams.

Reggie's a role player whether he comes off the bench or starts, stop comparing him to what he use to be. JO, Ron and Al are going to get the majority of the shots anyway. Chemistry is a big factor and the chemistry of our starting unit was pretty damn good.

If we pick up a good SG guard I'll be fine with Reggie coming off the bench, but if the roster stays basically the same, Reggie will still be a better starter than Fred IMO. Ron's best position is not 2 guard even though he can guard most of them.

I agree Hoop that Reggie did a fine job of guarding Richard Hammy.

Now, if Rick was going to put Reggie on the bench and tell him that he needs to come in and shoot & that's his sole purpose, then why would he put him on the bench in the first place? If Rick wants Reggie to come out firing, he might as well stay put in the starting lineup because that's what he'll do. (Maybe someone who understands can clearify my point. )

I agree with Hoop that he's a role player; he's said it himself. "This is no longer my team; it's Jermaine's." is the quote I've heard him say over and over.

After reading my post, the bench would make sense for the sole purpose that he would be the main scorer on the floor when Ron or another scoring starter comes out.

    Good job, buddy.

They also played together on the Pacers, but the judges will accept your answer.

Well, I apppreciate all of your opinions, it seems that we have quite a few different opinions but at least most still want Reggie on the team. I for one cannot imagine this team without Reggie. I just hope he comes back next season.
