    Default Mount Rushmore of Pacers

ESPN is doing the Mount Rushmore of each state. And when they get to Indiana I can only guess that Pacers will be left out (except for Bird, maybe).

So imagine with me. Imagine a mountain, over looking Indianapolis. Imagine four Pacer faces. Which Pacers should be on that Mount?

I agree. If there were 5 spots, then I think slick is in, but there's only so much room on the mountain.

Is it just basketball? I assume not. If not:

    Larry Bird
    Reggie Miller
    Peyton Manning
    Bob Knight

    If it is just basketball:

    Larry Bird
    Reggie Miller
Oscar Robertson (due to Crispus Attucks)
    Bob Knight

    With just Pacers:

    Mel Simon
    Herb Simon
    Reggie Miller
    Roger Brown

While you posted this, I was in the process of modifying my post. Sorry to have offended you by focusing on the ESPN aspect as opposed to responding to your post directly. You even modified your original thought by your additional post regarding not just players being eligible. Hence my inclusion of both of the Simons, without whom we wouldn't even have this board because the franchise wouldn't exist.

    Again, sorry

    Fixed.

As for the topic at hand, the four retired jerseys, natch.

I would have to go with Slick. Not only coaching but when I think of the 90s run I think of Boom Baby.

    Slick
    Brown
    Daniels
    Miller

    Four faces is tough, but

    Slick and Reggie are locks...

then you have to argue among Rajah, Mel, and Big Mac, and I'd guess that Mel might end up on the short end there.

    I concur.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

By the way, the Pennsylvania Mt. Rushmore does not have a single member of the six-time SB champion Steelers, so I can't imgaine that member of the Pacers makes this list.

My guess is that it is:

    John Wooden
    Bob Knight
    Oscar Robertson
a race car driver, perhaps AJ or Mears

Now wait, let's take into account everybody or thing.

    We have:
    the four retired jerseys
    Slick
    Mark Boyle
    Reb Porter
    Boomer
    The Simons
    Larry Bird

And then basically any player of note...ever.

We'll narrow it from there, but it should be in all facets of the team.

Peyton Manning will get more votes than any of those people maybe with the exception of Knight.

There is no way Manning doesn't make it.

    Exactly what I was thinking.

But really, no way Manning doesn't make it, he put Indy on the football map where we'll hopefully stay forever. Not to mention, we're a "what have you done for me lately?" society.

I'd say Knight makes the cut over Wooden because, though Wooden is a Hoosier, he played at Purdue, and coached at ISU, he's most famous for his time at UCLA. Knight, however, was the head of the great basketball traditions of the state of Indiana for some time.

I hope Reggie makes it. There's been no other Indiana athlete that gave so much and got so close to the fans here. When Manning retires, there will be plenty of weeping and gnashing of teeth, but moreso for the certain doom of the Colts, IMO. When Reggie retired, we were sad because we were going to miss him, not just his play on the court.

The final spot will probably go to Big O or Big Mac. Hard for me to tell because they both preceded me by a number of years. But, it would be a crime if they didn't get one of ABADays' old timey picks on there.

As for the Pacers Mount Rushmore, I'd say the 4 retired jerseys are almost certainly locked in. If anyone breaks in other than them, Slick would probably be the one. I don't think Walsh would get close really, though he may deserve it for managing a small market team so well for so long.

If this was all sports, all of Indiana I would agree. But for me in order to be etched in the granite you have to dramatically make your mark on the franchise.
Slick is because he coached the championships in the ABA and if the voice of the Pacers.
Roger Brown was the first player signed and had a formidable career.
Mel Daniels had productive years much like McGinnis. And later joined the staff in 1996. He also was an assistant coach with Indiana State when Larry Bird played.
McGinnis- What can I say he played with the Pacers both in the ABA and the NBA. He was a local high school star and a Hoosier star. I want to replace Brown with him. And I will.
Miller- Well what can I say about him that most don't already know.

For me it is who to leave off, rather than who to put on. Brown/Daniels/McGinnis should be a three headed monster.

Also EJ Bannon was the first President of Pacers. He should get the nod ahead of Bird IMHO.
