Cavs coach Mike Brown reacts to a foul call on LeBron James in the final moments of Tuesday's loss to Indianapolis. Brown was fined $25,000 for his outburst at the official who made the call.CLEVELAND -- Cavs coach Mike Brown is set to get a stipend from the NBA for being the All-Star Game coach -- but he'll also be getting a hefty bill from the league.
NBA Executive Vice President Stu Jackson announced today that Brown was being fined $25,000 for his comments critical of official Joey Crawford following Tuesday night's 96-95 loss to the Indiana Pacers. Brown felt Crawford had made up his mind to call a foul on LeBron James with 0.1 seconds left in regulation and the score tied.

Enraged after the game, Brown said:

"LeBron was in between his man and the basket. He went up in the air when the ball was tipped. And for that official to predetermine his call was awful. It was awful. That's why we lost the game. I never blame the officials. But that call was a predetermined call and he should have swallowed his whistle on it. But he did not.

"I don't care if I get fined. It is what it is. I saw the two plays. It was a bad call. He determined the outcome of the game. If they want to fine me for telling the truth, they can fine me for telling the truth."

On Wednesday, Brown said he stood by his comments and expected a fine to be coming from the league office. It is the first time in Brown's career he's been fined more than the standard $1,000 for a technical foul.

Last week they had the 4th worst record in the league, had an 11.9 percent chance of winning the lottery and were in line to land a franchise type player like Derrick Favors or DeMarcus Cousins. This week? They have a 1.7 percent chance of winning the lottery, have the 8th worst record and are in line to draft Cole Aldrich or Greg Monroe. Way to go Jim O'Brien. I like how Brown complains about this when you would have to wonder how many similiar calls that King James have gotten that went the Cavs way simply because he's one of those Elite Players that gets "phantom" fouls everytime they touch the ball.

To be fair the money goes to charity and not to David Stern or the NBA owners. Just pointing that out for those that may not know.

I guess in this economy, we need to make the coaches and players more angry more often.

Well, he should have been. And the officials should probably be suspended a game too for the little "hey, look at us" show they put on.

what I dont get is that a player can detest a call on the court and that is fine but when a coach mentions something in a post game conference he gets penalised.

Whining to an official and complaining about one after the game are two different things.

iPacer is right, they get fined, too.

Look at it this way, the purpose of Brown's post-game tirade was to call public attention to the officiating.

That's never viewed the same as complainingn directly to the officials during the course of the game. Comments to the media as strong as Brown's (especially the "premeditated" language) will get you a fine every time.

His rant deserved the fine. But the calls deserved the rant.

Of course, neither call would have been made if it had not involved King James. Of course, Brown doesn't remember that.

BTW, it was not premeditated, it was reactionary. It was a gut reaction by the official. In no time at all, the official knew he had to make the call or would be watching re-runs of the favoritism over all-star weekend...

Brown wasn't protesting the CALLS (plural), he was protesting the CALL (singular) against LeBron. Let's not get confused here. It would be different if he said the officiating at the end of the game was bad, but he was just complaining about LeBron's foul of Danny, and that's it.

    It was stupid.

They might have been. No way to know.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

If the foul against Danny on the other end hadn't been called, then I could understand his frustration. HOWEVER, how he can possibly complain after Lebron got the same exact call on the other end is beyond me.

Frankly, neither foul (on Danny or LeBron) should have been called. The game should have gone into OT. But if you're going to call it on one end, you'd better call it on the other especially when it's on an identical play.

Make up call? Mostly likely...yes, but the call against Granger shouldn't have been made - PERIOD! So, in one respect they cancelled each other out. Still, in the final analysis, it was the Pacers who benefited the most. Still, it was the Pacers who deserved to win that game outright because they played better ball overall.

Naah, no one would have even noticed if LeBron gets the call and Danny doesn't. Happens too often, it's a "dog bites man" kind of thing.
