A gentleman whom with I went to school and took Arabic classes died in Ethiopia last week, where he was stationed by the State Department. He was a senior when I was a freshman, and was also from the Midwest, and helped me adjust to life at an East Coast university. Just a really nice guy who was incredibly smart and willing to be patient with a dumb 18 year old freshman.
I am posting this thread not to be political at all, but to recognize those people that serve our country in roles we might not always think of. The military gets a ton of respect as they well should, but people that work for the government agencies such as the State Department and USAID often serve our government in similarly hazardous conditions.
I know there is at least one other GW alum on this board and a few DC people, and this was a big loss for our community.
