it has nothing to do with him loving conseco. it's our poor defense.

kapono scored 25 against so we can get him too.

Amare's an incredible talent, but he doesn't solve any of our defensive issues. We would still need to find an interior defender. Plus his attitude his a big question mark. If you get the right deal you probably have to do it if you're the Pacers just because it would be a huge coup to get a guy who started on the western conference all star team in here from a press stand point.

If it does not work, your off the hook in a year, 2 at the most. I would protect Granger, Dun, Roy and TJ. Give them whatever else they wanted + our first next year. They would take either Daniels or Rasho for cap space or Murphy because he's a monster rebounder and 3pt shooter. They may take Jack because they might be considering opting out of Nash's 13.5M contract.

Is Amare the worst defender in the NBA or just the biggest whiner? Where are we on that one?

Aren't the justifications for talking yourself into Amare almost the same as the justifications for talking yourself into Tinsley, Artest, or JO year after year?

EDIT: The one good thing is that Amare would be off the books in 2010 in case it doesn't work out. He'd probably leave even if it did work out, however. He's exactly the type of guy to leave Indiana for Miami or New York.

I think the Suns would demand Dunleavy. I also think it makes a lot of sense that if the Pacers and Suns are going to deal, then you include Barbosa as well.

Something like, Dunleavy, Foster, Quis, 2009 unprotected 1st for Amare and Barbosa. That's probably a deal that the Suns might look at if they truely want to cut costs, remain semi-competitive, and get a draft pick. I could also see them asking for Hibbert.

And like everyone has pointed out, Amare is off the books in 2010 if it all goes horribly wrong. Bottom line: If the opportunity presents itself, I think TPTB do it just to stick butts in the seats.

    Ford, Barbosa, Granger, Murphy, Amare.

That team would tear it up in an NBA video game, but how well would it perform in real life? Defense would certainly be just as ugly as it is now, maybe even uglier.

The defense can't really get much worse. If the Suns would accept that trade anyone who wouldn't want it is crazy.

Wow, some people think we could really get possibly the best offensive PF in the game without giving up one of the top 3 players on a lottery team. Amazing. Nobody wants Murphy.

I'd give them anyone except Granger. Then work to replace whoever they take with defensive role players.

As intriguing as Amare sounds, I don't think he's what we need. We would definitely be a better team with him, but we're probably gonna have to give up a lot to get him, which isn't something I'm willing to do

I think we're a couple defensive players away from being a pretty good team. We can already score, and I'm actually starting to like what Murphy brings to the table, both on the boards and how he stretches the defense and creates matchup problems when he's hitting his shot.

I'd be more interested in a guy like Camby. He's athletic and great shot blocker, who can actually score at times as well. I also think he would be a great teacher for Hibbert when it comes to defense and shot blocking.

If we could get Camby, and then maybe add a low profile perimeter defender, or actually bring Brandon Rush along, I think we could make a nice push after the break

Sounds like a good plan. I read the book about the Suns. It's been maybe 2-3 years ago. My recollection about Amare in it was more like a very young, immature, arguably superficial characterization. I also recall that the characterization of Shawn Marion was way worse.

Defensively, he's no ace. He certainly isn't the type of interior defensive specialist many of us are clamoring for. On the other hand, he'd be another legit superstar to pair with Granger who'd give us scoring from the PF. Also, he's not a rebounding machine but he can, IF MOTIVATED, get 8-10 a game regularly.

I just don't see how you could turn it down in our postion. Bottom line, we just don't have that much talent currently beyond DG. As has been pointed out, if it doesn't work out it's a short-term arrangement.

If they wanted TJ then we'd have to find a way to reload at PG quickly as we'd be without any legit starter there. I like TJ and he may just be our second best player currently. However, I don't really thing he's a long-term PG solution anyway so I could live with it.

All that said, I'd be equally or more interested in Camby.

All this chatter and the most likely scenario is we make no moves whatsoever.

Amare wouldn't be happy here because Danny would (and should) still be our #1 option on offense.

Amare could be a beast on this team, he is complaining because Steve Kerr wants them to play half court and feed Shaq all day long, when everybody knows that the rest of the players include Amare are better playing up tempo, I would love to have Amare here, he is not a good defender, but who is a good defender in the NBA? Duncan? Camby?(to old) KG? there is not many good PF that play D, he could make the Pacers the best 5th team in the east easy.

Maybe a change of scenery (Indianapolis) is what he needs? If we could somehow get him and keep Danny I'd be on cloud nine.

    Chad Ford mentioned

[Pacers] have expiring contracts, they have a lottery pick, they have young players and they have a few nice role players with decent contracts. They'd be in the running for sure. But so will a lot of teams.
Who do you think are 'nice role players with decent contracts' are? I could think of Jack, Foster, Diener and Graham???

If Bird/Morway could pull this off without losing Ford, Rush, or Granger...they would be in running for GM of the year

But I could honestly see them going after Ford with the way Nash has been declining. Hes been constantly injured with back pains and aint getting any younger. But I dont know if Phx would like to take on his contract with his injury concerns, therefore I could see them asking for Jack in the package

quis is our best trade piece by far. expiring contract, having a great year, veteran who will help a playoff push. rasho's expiring contract will have value too.

dunleavy, ford, and foster aren't bad pieces either, the only caveat being the 3 years left on their contracts. troy is having a great year statistically - hopefully that raises his value somewhat.

chad ford is correct, the pacers do have a lot of trading pieces. however, the most attractive ones are the expirings (quis and rasho), which the pacers very much need for their own financial situation. so it's going to be a tough choice.

i would guess that the basic package we are offering would look like this: one expiring contract (quis or rasho), one solid vet, plus additional sweeteners (jack, rush, hibbert, and/or future pick) in exchange for an all-star caliber player - someone like amare or brand for example. anything less and it's probably not worth the financial hit.

I'd give them any of the guys you include in this post (except DG) not to mention Murph or Dun (although their contracts would seem to make them unattractive). Basically anybody other than Danny. However, not necessarily any combination of guys.

I agree. I could see them taking back a lot of expiring contracts and a draft pick (of course). They're salary this season is $75,762,253. Theyre over $17 million over the cap

You'd have to figure that w/Porter as the Suns coach, he's probably trying to switch the team from a run-n-gun offense to more of a half-court team. Amare no longer fits that style, but Shaq does. The question then becomes what players do we have that would fit that style?

About the only experienced players I can think of are Quis and Rasho. I'd give them up along w/a 2nd-round draft pick if it meant getting Amare even for 1 yr. We'd be in not worse shape really even if Amare hung around for just a year or less like Peja did.

Sidenote: vnzla81 and wintermute: It would seem great minds do think alike. (See posts #37 and #40, respectively. )

Murphy would be a ridiculous fit in Phoenix. I think Phoenix would have to consider Ford/Murphy/Picks for Amare.

You aren't making the playoffs, not losing games to the Knicks and Wolves.

So let's consider team structure goals instead, and I don't mean losing to get a higher pick. What I mean is that moving JO allowed Danny to step up into more of a best player on the court role and establish a new role in the hierarchy. He's JUST GOT THERE and doesn't even have his feet wet as "the star".

Bringing in Amare messes with that. Now if he had a great personality that made people better (Nash for example) it could actually enhance Danny's growth to share the spotlight and take some of this new pressure off of him. And this would include planning to be here awhile because a short stay would undermine that feeling with the sense of it not lasting or being "serious".

But the last thing Danny needs right now is competition for the top guy. He's put in a lot of hard work and been asked to ride out the very worst of times with the team. It sucks to be stuck with lesser talent around you that keeps you from winning, but this is a period of learning for Danny, learning to be "the man" which he will then apply when the talent improves rather than reverting to a passive role (see B Rush).

I see no reason why Granger and Amare wouldn't coexist with both being 20+ ppg scorers for our team. Danny's clearly the more mature of the two and would have the longer tenure here, so there's no question that he would be the team leader. Amare would accept this.

Talent wins basketball games. If we have a chance to land an All-NBA power forward for a fair price, we'd be foolish not to do it. The only reasonable objection I can see to bringing in Stoudemire would be if you were afraid he'd walk when his contract was up.

How do you know they do not want cap space + draft picks back? Amare makes 15M, we can only trade 13-17M back, Dun makes 10M, TJ makes 8M. So who else would they want?
