Default Freeney fined $20K for blasting refs

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playof...ory?id=3823511

Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney was hit with a $20,000 fine by the NFL for his expletive-laced interview following last week's 23-17 overtime playoff loss to the San Diego Chargers.

The league cited Freeney for making "inappropriate comments on officiating," according to the Indianapolis Star.

Freeney, apparently frustrated by the three defensive penalties incurred as the Chargers made their game-winning drive, told Yahoo! Sports after the game: "Those were the worst [expletive] calls I've seen in a long time ... To have a game of that magnitude taken out of your hands, it's just disgusting. It's not like they made one [expletive] bad call -- it's three calls, in overtime ... They need to start investigating some other [expletive]."

what a whiny tool--I hadn't heard about that

Those were three of the most obvious penalties you will ever see. Does he seriously think that grabbing a guy by the facemask will not be called? That a defender tackling the lead blocker on a screen play will not be flagged fot it? I can see complaining about the illegal contact penalty, since sometimes the refs "let that go" or miss it, but the replays showed contact out to 7 or 8 yards beyond the line of scrimmage.

You might legitimately complain about potential penalties against the Chargers that were not called (though I can't think of one off the top of my head) but each of the OT penalties was well-deserved.

I hadn't heard about that rant, either, which is why it surprised me to see this.

To be honest, none of those penalties really bothered me all that much. We should never have been in that position in the first place.

I only saw this once when they replayed SD blocking Freener but the O-Lineman had his hand in Freeney's facemask the entire play. That may have honked him off though I imagine that goes on a lot and defensive players have just learned to live with it.

The holding call on the pass was the one call I thought was terrible. The other two were fine.

Look, I don't think he deserves to be called a tool or anything like that. Most of the penalties I was ok with, but we're talking to one of the most held guys in the league. I saw it a few times during last week's game.

Most of the penalties in OT though, like I said, looked fine to me, just sucked to have it happen.

That's what I was thinking. It was pretty blatant, which is OK if they're going to call it like that (a little loose) both ways.

Odd that nobody ever heard about this "expletive-laced interview".

hypothetical- say the Patriots were in the playoffs, lost, and Randy Moss gave an expletive-laced interview after the game (not that he would ever do that... it's a hypothetical). Do you think it would have gotten some play? I think it would be leading off Sports Center for a week.

Freeney doesn't really have a history of doing this type of stuff like Moss, but it is still strange that it didn't get any attention. Freeney is a big name player.

I am still in shock and awe about this because I could have sworn every player on the Colts was an angel.

Must every discussion be about the Patriots?

Since the Pats didn't make the playoffs, we have to find entertainment somewhere.

Would it be the first thing on Sports Center if it were TO, or Joey Porter, or Donovan McNabb? absolutely yes!

This was hushed up, unlike it would be wth any team or any player or any team that the media has deemed "unlikable".

They are - the entire story is just a nefarious scheme by Bill Belichick to damage Freeney's reputation, make it so he can't get laid withoiut paying for it and prevent the Colts from keeping America safe for Democracy.

I also heard he was rummaging around in one of Marvin Harrison's closets right before a certain shooting incident a while back.
