Default Indianapolis at San Diego - AFC Wild Card - 1/3/09

(12-4) After starting the season with a 3-4 record, Peyton Manning and the Colts surged and won 9 straight. They hope to continue this streak and get some revenge against the team that ended their season last year.

(8-8) With quarterback Philip Rivers playing at a high level throughout the majority of the season, the Chargers hope to have enough fire power to stop the red hot Colts.

Well another wasted season. 1 and done.

Thanks for the memories though, Coach Dungy, and Marvin.

I just can't take these one and done appearances though.

There needs to be a lot of changes this offseason. We aren't the same team we used to be, and unless something is done, we'll just fade away until we find ourselves consistently out of the playoffs.

Agreed. At this point, I would even say we could use another big time receiver. Harrison is likely gone, and I don't think Wayne/Gonzo/Clark is going to get it done. Sure, that's a nice trio, but not Super Bowl Champs quality.

The Chargers' co-MVPs were their punter and Sproles. It would've been just Sproles if he hadn't fumbled at the one yard line. A close third would be the Colts' defense.

The Colts D got a couple lucky breaks with the Sproles fumble and that interception. Freeney and Mathis had some nice sacks. Other than that, they were pretty bad. All those penalties were horrible too.

I'm not one to point fingers at refs, but I find it interesting that the Chargers apparently had clean blocks all night. I don't recall them ever being called for holding, meanwhile the Colts got called for it what seemed like 4 or 5 times.

I guess the Chargers just have the Colts' number.

    Dungy? Good riddance!

Oh, wait, the guy coming in to replace him has a 26-63 collegiate coaching record.

What? Sure it is. Other teams have won Super Bowls with way less talent at WR. The Colts just don't understand playoff success comes from more than just spending money on skill players.

Stupid D. Cannot stop the run. Sproles is good, but not that good. Geeze. What a turd of a game.

I don't think it was the WR corps that lost the game. One of the units made little man Sproles a world beater tonight and it sure wasn't the WRs.

Right now I'd say wide receivers are probably the least of our concerns. The defense, running game, and special teams should all be priorities this offseason.

Agreed. Wayne, Clark, Gonzalez are definitely Super Bowl quality WRs. Weaknesses are obviously run defense and special teams.

The Colts are obviously a seriously dysfunctional team. They had one great playoff run, the year they won the Superbowl obviously, but otherwise have been the NFL equivalent of the "greatest practice player ever" Jonathan Bender. 3 of the last 4 years losing in their first playoff game. These guys just don't seem to understand playoff ball. The list of their failings evident on display in tonight's game would fill a lengthy dissertation.

We definitely put money into non-skilled positions. We spend money on offensive line. We spend money on safeties and defensive ends. We've tried to spend money on DTs but it didn't work. We just haven't spent money on linebackers.

Can the Colts ever get a real kick returner? We have had rotating scrubs doing it forever. For what they're paying those scrubs they could just have me run it out to the 15 yard line and fall down for the league minimum.

True, but those teams most likely could run the ball day and night and most likely had a good defense to boot.

I agree that WR is not one of our main concerns, I was just making a comment that an addition there could be very beneficial. Obviously I feel our priorities should be run D and the O-Line. We need to get better protection and we absolutely HAVE TO start running the ball effectively.

We have put some money into the OL, and they're pretty good. I really have few complaints about our offensive line. Rush blocking could be better but our talen at RB isn't exactly great.

I think we could have done more to try to build our DL besides relying on 7th round draft picks and Anthony McFarland and Corey Simon. I mean, we should be evaluating talent better at those positions.

One of my biggest mistakes as a sports fan was supporting the Sanders resigning. And to me Sanders is basically a skilled player.

Your O-Line can't run-block for spit. They get shoved all over the place. Truly terrible.

Outside of the games he missed, Sanders was a large disappointment this year. In the past, he has missed several games but was always ready for the playoffs. When he did play though, he elevated our defense to a completely new level. He didn't seem to have that effect this year. I don't really know what it was, but he didnt seem to be himself. Hopefully he regains his form, and Marlin has a speedy recovery because we really need these guys playing at their best.

    I want to cry.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

We should have shelled out the money for Jake Scott. We need to get back to doing what we did in the Superbowl postseason: killer running game and effective defense. The play that postseason is looking more and more like a fluke. We spent this entire season having Peyton pull miracle wins out of his ***.

Marvin needs to retire, or otherwise get his cap number off the books. We need to reinvest in some beef on the lines, become more of a power team.

Also, we should explore trading Sanders. Give him a few years and he'll be an oft-injured, not-as-explosive tiny saftey who isn't worth his contract. See what we can bring in there, and keep Bethea and Bullit.

Improve the O-line. Please. I was saying this last year. I'm saying it now. Improve the damn line.

Realistically, how much improvement are we going to do in this team? I think that they are on the downhill side of their run.

If we stand pat, of course they are. We can make a lot of improvement if we play our cards right this offseason. That's why there are trades, the draft, and free agency. We're far from being done. We just need to shuffle the deck and bring in some fresh faces.

But if the Colts can convert a 3rd and 2 the game is all but over with the defense allowing just 14 points.

This loss is mostly on the offense. The defense screwed up at the end, but the offense had a chance to put that game away and they blew it. That game could have been over with the defense allowing just 14 pts, which is more than acceptable

Too many 3 and outs, too many empty possessions.
